    So -- Denise didn't want to be a divorcee or a widow -- she wanted to be a murderer.

      @TentinQuarantino_ 3 года назад +15

      Winchester quoted her as saying ‘I’d rather be a rich widow than a poor divorcée.’ She also claimed the reason she couldn’t just divorce Mike was because her Christian beliefs went against it. She is a cold hearted POS and she had him wrapped around her finger. Brian’s brains were all stored below his belt.

      What was Denise thinking to report the kidnapping? Brian would have faced life in prison so he had nothing to lose by confessing to Mike's murder and see her put away for a long time for her part in the conspiracy.
      If she thought no one would believe him, it didn't take long for her to figure it out that investigators suspected her immediately after reporting the kidnapping when she was interviewed by the "bad cop" when he grilled her about Mike's murder instead of the kidnapping. You could almost hearing her saying "What have I just done"?!
      And why it didn't take her long to get a message to Brian after his arrest for her kidnapping that she didn't say anything to investigators. Which really sealed her fate! It probably haunts her to no end that she ever reported her kidnapping to begin with.

    Around 10:30, the prosecutor says there was no evidence of foul play at that time. I find that remarkable, simply because the body was never recovered despite extensive search efforts and the fact that the boat was found at a different location than where the personal belongings of Mike were recovered. Now sure, it's possible the boat drifted away on a current and the body drifted in a different direction, or was eaten by alligators, but these incongruencies should have been reason enough to remain suspicious.
    Not only that, IIRC Mike had just taken out a huge life insurance policy which Denise claimed shortly after his disappearance; had the investigators been paying attention that ought to have raised all of the red flags, doubly so considering Winchester was in the insurance business.
    I'm not a legal expert, but I would assume the life insurance policy coupled with the unsolved death would constitute probable cause for further investigation.

  • @AliRadicali
    @AliRadicali Год назад +2

    I think the prosecutor could have done a much better job at presenting a narrative for this case. I understand what he's trying to do by essentially presenting the narrative through the eyes of what the investigators knew or assumed, chronologically, but given how long it took for certain things to come out, the narrative keeps jumping back and forth throughout the timeline. I'm sure a better calibre of storyteller could make that work, but this guy should just have told the tale in straight chronological order, with the benefit of hindsight. Or at least start off by introducing the two couples and the affair.
    As far as opening statements go, this one wasn't very effective IMO.

      @tiffanynaidoo2003 2 года назад +1

      So how do you know Brian is lying? It happened 18 years prior, I'm sure a chance encounter like that would easily be forgotten, if it did happen. And at that time he had no incentive to lie about a minor detail like that. Or what if Mike Phillips is lying?

Mike Phillips wouldn't have even known about a disappearance (let alone murder) at that time and wouldn't have expected Brian to be involved in it. I don't think that just because he didn't remember the Walmart meeting from 18 years ago doesn't mean it didn't happen. But, you're right that the state certainly wanted Brian's story to be backed up.

    • @tiffanynaidoo2003
      @tiffanynaidoo2003 2 года назад +2

      @@blabl590 I think maybe a better way to explain what I was trying to say is that for Brian it would have been a "9/11-type" of day where you remember details of everything. I don't think it would have been that way for anyone else. I don't memorialize meeting people I know out in public, just seems like a random thing. The defense had to try to discredit Brian's credibility so they used Mike Phillips for that. If Brian had not even mentioned Mike Phillips on direct examination, I don't think it would have been an issue since it had nothing to do with Denise's culpability for the murder of Mike Williams.

      She was getting desperate as she didn't want to go away w/Mike. And remember, phone records weren't kept so there wasn't a trail had she called Brian to tell him Mike was going fishing. That's the only logical explanation that Brian knew Mike's whereabouts, I would think.
