  • How is a gem cut and polished? Today's gemstone that's ready for precision cutting ( aka: Faceting ) is a gem you may not have heard of: Apatite. Actually a grouping of other minerals, apatite is typically too soft for the average jewelry market. However, when this delicate gem is carefully undertaken in the lapidary process, it can reward you with stunning colors! Today we'll perform the lapidary art of cutting and polishing this tricky apatite into a brilliant gemstone.

    ▶ FAQ
    * What is gemcutting/faceting?
    Shaping & polishing gemstones is a craft called faceting- aka gemcutting. I'm here to bring attention to this seldom seen artform by taking you through its rewarding (and satisfying) process!
    * What does "precision cut" mean?
    My specific branch of gemcutting is a technique called "precision" cutting, which strives for symmetry, proportion, brilliance, and precise facet meets. Overall, it's the color, shine, and the gem's best potential that takes priority over its final size- though I also strive to select the best shape for the gemstone in order to preserve as much material as possible (aka its "yield")

    Isn't the colour of apatite just gorgeous? Throughout all stages of the process. A beautiful finished piece too - I'm glad this was popped into my playlist.

      Like a deep ocean! I'm so glad you appreciate the color as much as I do. The material reminds me of a more affordable paraiba 💙 Thank you so much for the kind words and support!

      It is so exciting for new, independent faceters to join the field! This artform branch was close to being lost in the west, but recently there has been a renewed interest. 16 stones is quite an accomplishment! Thank you very much for your support

    What a beautiful result, although I liked the rough stone too. Electric blue, very Paraiba tourmaline. UK 🇬🇧

    Such an amazing video! This brilliantly cut gem awakens the magpie inside of me. And what a beautiful color it has, I wonder how it would look inside a mount that has the shape and color of a coral sand beach.
    01:30 Could you please explain why you removed a part of each of the epoxy glue component blobs? Does it help you get an exact 50:50 ratio?

      Thank you so much for your kind words and for the question! That's a wonderful idea, a beautiful peach would compliment this blue so well!
      That's exactly it! This epoxy needs to be measured exact, though its plunger doesn't always give an even amount. I've learned this the hard way, when my first faceting project broke off the poorly cured two-part glue and was irrecoverable. Now I'm very careful!

    I always found the lapidary hobby/profession interesting, but presumed it was too expensive to get involved. Just googling the prices of raw stones, some are pretty affordable. Assuming the machine and supplies are somewhat reasonable, it might be doable after all. How did you get started?

    • @crystalquarry
      @crystalquarry  Год назад +2

      I do believe there is still a paywall in the market for equipment, which oftentimes is the most expensive part of the craft to simply get started. This can discourage people from learning to cut, themselves, and encourage them to continue to buy hastily cut gems from the large jewelers (though the hard working suppliers have done a great job under the circumstances.) So, even though there are some affordable rough out there, the machine along with its equipment is always the biggest hurdle. I have been extremely fortunate to have support by my local lapidary enthusiasts in order to get started on the craft! If you have any lapidary clubs in your area, I definitely suggest visiting them first to help get a head start on your gem cutting journey!
