How it feels (and sounds) to be an independent gemcutter in my tiny art studio! Shaping & polishing gemstones is a craft called faceting- aka gemcutting. My technique is called "precision" cutting, which strives for symmetry, proportion, brilliance, and precise facet meets. Overall, it's the color, shine, and the gem's best potential that takes priority over its final size. I'm here to bring attention to this seldom seen artform by taking you through its rewarding (and satisfying) process!
My Background:
I've been cutting gems for 6 years and have had the privilege to study under certified gemologist mentors. One from IGS whose talents topped USFG competitions, the other certified internationally by Gem-A, both I am equally grateful for. One of my pieces has also been featured by the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History under their Mineral and Gem Collection, virtual exhibition 2020.

How is a gem cut and polished? Today's gemstone that's ready for precision cutting ( aka: Faceting ) is an organic gem: Amber. This one is UV reactive, which gives it the name Blue Amber! Hi ! Nice vidéo good job ! What do u use for prepolish / polish ? I didn’t see you using Diamond powder or other compunds
@@guinardalexandre5320 Thank you so very much! For tourmaline, as this one, I use diamond embedded ultralaps. They're the thin film toppers that need a water spray. I didn't show every grit but for those I can go from 8k up to 50k. They're very easy and affordable, but they don't work for every stone and they wear out quickly
@@crystalquarry Oh ok i started cutting a week ago first time i see those , interesting ! Do you ever use a copper lap for polish ? i receive mine and polish a stone with but the result was not mirror enough and i saw that i had not "charging" the lap like they do for copper , (cutting , burnish etc before diamond compund ) i just put some oil mixed with my diamond paste on the lap and started polishing... Do you think the result can be a lot different if i charge properly the copper lap ?
@@guinardalexandre5320 before I answer that I want to preface it by saying equipment and technique can be VERY individualistic. Each person can have their own preferences. That being said my first instructor advised that I use a copper lap for corundum only, due to its hardness. I still haven't worked on any corundum yet, personally, but I've done some other metal laps for polishing and I gotta say it can feel pretty frustrating. Right now I really don't like solid metal for polishing if I can avoid it as there is no give, and every facet needs to be atomically perfect. It also feels like it goes dreadfully slow, at least in my experience. Other laps I use for polishing are ceramic and acrylic, and I don't mark grooves into any of them. That being said I do have some videos here on RUclips saved that does teach the proper way to charge copper laps- maybe those may give better advice, if you're working with hard stones like corundum! I just personally don't recommend starting out with this challenging technique, but some may suggest otherwise
This helps me understand why gems are so expensive.🔎
Lovely end result, well done!

What are you looking for when using the paper trick?
@@wack1305 I'm looking for a microscopic shift away from flush. So if the paper pivots to the left or right of the cube, it is slightly off from a perfect 90°, and it is off enough to notice when cutting! If I get a perfect 90° and depth (the paper pivots in the center of the block) then that means I don't have to "cheat" the machine (fine-tune it while already cutting), and that makes for a much less stressful table cut 😁
@@crystalquarry thank you, thats a neat trick
I just got some montana sapphires, boy are they small. biggest are 4x5mm in rough. I need 1mm dops. I was able to cut a few with my 3mm dops. but lots are too small.
@@pinettesteve oh yeah those will be a challenge I'd love to try. Finding dops have been difficult, I hope you can get them!

Great video. I love the patience and precision that your video shows. Beautiful work. My great uncle did basic lapidary work here in Michigan. I wish I would have had time with him to learn 😢
@@stevegrody9905 thank you so much! There was a period of time in the states where this art was starting to be lost with the generation that learned it. Tiny ones are so quick and satisfying when they stay on the dop, nice work!
@@canadiangemstones7636 Absolutely, the disasters I've had to get to this one were devastating! Gem after gem was falling off, right at their final size too. But it sure helped me to learn how to work with them differently than the others- thank you!

Nice work, full cut in only two millimeters. I was guessing single cut but nope you went all out. It is something to see when the facets are so small they blend together without magnification. The gem will look like a little light bulb.

gee, I wonder why you cut the corners off. 😁
Hi! What corners?
@@crystalquarry the stone you cut at the end, fragile corners is why the emerald cut exists! also before peridot was found to be a separate mineral, they thought it was just another emerald. so you might say peridot was another reason for the emerald cut!
@@DuelPorpoise the design is called "Bright Emerald Scissors" by Henk Prins. Good eye for the emerald cut!

It is fascinating, I had just found out my mentor has done this technique in the past- would have been good to learn from! So that makes 3 for me as well. I appreciate your interest, and I recommend trying this out when you get the chance!
Machine brand name?.. .
Faceting machine is UltraTec V2 highly recommend
Black Wax (High Temp) is your friend. Toss the Epoxy and CA Glue and get some Black Wax from Kingsley North. Once you go Black you'll never go back. And you will likely never have another stone fall off .. unless you really bang it on something. :) Another advantage of Black Wax is there is No Waiting Time for anything to cure. As soon as it is cool enough to grab the dop, it's ready to go, even after a transfer.
I think I need a tutorial for dopping faceted stones with black wax. I just can't seem to get the gem hot enough (showcased in this video) and I'm terrified of putting it under open flame or a heat plate. I have a few years experience with stones in lapidary and green wax, but not with dopping delicate crystals in faceting with wax. Do you have any tips?
The stone needs to be heat up a bit so the wax can stick to it
Thank you! I was heating it under a flame off camera. The issue that arises with crystals that is often different than with stones (depending on the crystal and stone) is crystals typically burst under open flame. I heated it for as long as I could bare, but couldn't bring myself to heat it any further for fear I was going to shatter it
Incredible!!
Very great work! Love seeing the process and how you included the mistakes 😊
Thank you so much! 🙏
thanks for sharing your learning process, wish you the best! for rosin or asphalt waxes, get a heat gun, 300 C on low, its melts the wax totally and you will have great control, you wont damage your stones
or in your case @Crystal Quarry, since its small work, an air soldering pen for soldering electronics, would work great!
@@EruannaArte That's a really good idea! Thank you so much, and thank you for your interest!

I have never seen this before, what an amazingly unique idea, and even better result! truly blown away, well done :)
Wow thank you so much!! I was pretty stunned by the result as well, you never know how a gem might turn out
Well this one was a winner! Great work @@crystalquarry
Great take on a doublet. Normally, I abhor any faceting of precious opal but, technically, you only faceted the bottom part, which largely will be unseen in a ring (depending on the setting I suppose). Great results. I have been cutting opal only a couple years. I thought that was tough but faceting stones looks to be a couple steps above that, even with the machine. Lots of work involved! I like the video, editing, and the finished result. You have earned a like AND I have subbed. *wink, how about helping another cutter out? One question, is that opal Ethiopian Welo?
This was so kind thank you so very much for your interest! I've cabbed and faceted opal and I've come across the most difficulties with faceting it, but as with anything, practice helps the most. Faceted opals are just so delicate especially for settings, so the nice advantage to this doublet is how the prongs can grip the quartz and the opal should stay suspended and untouched. Thank you so much for your kind words and appreciation! Your guess as to the type of opal this is would be better than mine, I can only identify a few localities myself
that is super cool creative idea. I love it. Thank you for sharing this process wow :)
