  • G.I. Joe finally arrives in the final moments of this weeks Duke #5, the finale of the series. The big standout in a week of fantastic indie comics. Unfortunately DC delivered nothing worth reading and Marvel only delivers Wolverine: Madripoor Knights. Great indie books like Duke, TMNT, Conan The Barbarian, Dawnrunner, If You Find This, and Feral save comic readers from DC's and Marvel's ineptitude. Wes and Drew review the best new comics of the week, including Duke #5 the arrival of G.I. Joe in the Energon Universe. G.I. Joe arrives in Duke finale and more comic book recommendations.

For Power Girl, aside from the fact that it’s a House of Brainiac tie-in, the good things about this comic are showing the psychic jerk jar every time Omen uses her powers to invade Karen’s privacy (which reminded me of the douchebag jar from New Girl) and the Czarnians acting like Lobo. Also, Crush encountering Karen and showing her Holiday Gals (from Wonder Woman), Karen and Omen talking about Kara’s date with someone, and Axel Gust being mysterious and vague. I wonder if Axel Gust is a either a version of or actually Ben Rubel (from the Rebirth Supergirl series) because of hiding secrets, playing dirty, doing something neutral good, and interacting with Supergirl and Power Girl. The one thing I can say is that even though this is a House of Brainiac tie-in, this is better then the first arc of the series and okay compared to the Streaky issue and the last arc where Power Girl and Supergirl team up. Overall, this is an okay comic.
For The Brave and the Bold, here is what I gave to say. For the Batman and Maps part, I like that Maps was able to save Bruce’s life and in return team up to save Mother’s victims after he revealed his identity as Batman to her. Also, since Alfred is in this, this is set between July 2018 and City of Bane in 2019, since this is set before his death. Also, Bruce calling Maps Robin because she earned it for a moment. For the Artemis part, we have the AXE protocol asking Artemis where Wonder Woman is instead of seeing her have a journey with a psychedelic horse. It’s likely that the next few issues of this arc will derail and will end with Artemis learning from her mistakes after dealing with the AXE protocol or something like that. Also, Artemis saying that she’s not an American citizen, confirming that her post-Trial of the Amazons origins (i.e. she’s a military brat) is ignored.
For Flash, the good things about this comic are Barry and the Flash Family (including Circuit Breaker because they’re a new character who has interacted with them since Beast World) doing some heroics and helping people while trying to learn what’s wrong with the Speed Force. Also, Barry having headaches, Jai learning how to use his powers from Inspector Pilgrim, and the Flash Family trying to look for Wally. The only thing I can criticize is Amanda Waller being in this comic because it’s part of her plan to remove all the powers from the heroes and villains of the main DCU. I predict that she will appear in every DC comic as a lead up Absolute Power because she wants to tell the public about her opinions of superheroes and supervillains with powers. It’s getting annoying for Waller to appear in every DC comic, and it’s likely that Absolute Power will be a complete failure, just like Dark Crisis, Knight Terrors, and Beast World.
For Green Arrow, the great things about this comic are Oliver and company fighting holographic versions of the JLA; Merlyn telling his backstory and history by combining his pre-Crisis, pre-Flashpoint, and post-Flashpoint history; and Oliver and Merlyn about to have a final fight by having Merlyn use versions of the Green Arrow Family to fight him. Also, it’s hilarious that Roy realized that Oliver was really doing so that he can find Merlyn and have a final showdown with him. Overall, this comic is great!
For USM, the great things about this comic are Peter and MJ spending dinner with Harry and Gwen, J. Jonah and Uncle Ben staring their news business online while babysitting May and Richard, Harry telling Peter that he must tell MJ about his Spider-Man identity in order to protect them and to make sure that with great power must come great responsibility, and Peter and MJ spending the last few pages taking a stroll in Manhattan. Overall, this comic is great!
For ASM, the good things about this comic are Peter and Betty convincing Ben and Janine not to use the Goblin Queen’s machine to bring back his memories because Peter knows that the machines turn into a goblin. I like that Ben and Janine were convinced by Peter and Betty to bare the pain and get some help. Hope that they’ll find a way to bare their pain, live in peace, and be in the upcoming Chasm: Mark of Kane miniseries. Also, Ben not knowing what side he’s on after this before turning into Peter’s side and Goblin Queen being defeated by Peter.
For SSM, the interesting things about this comic are Supernova finally realizing that Doc Ock is the one who made her like this and Peter and Anna-Maria noticing a lot of people acting like Doc Ock because of his Spider-Bots. Also, Spider-Boy as the Superior Spider-Boy.

I wasn’t a fan of Tom Reilly’s art on Duke because I wanted more realistic art like the original series but it grew on me. I’ve enjoyed Josh Williamson on this series and hate he isn’t going to be on upcoming GI Joe series because he really does a good job with these characters.

Conan The Barbarian has been one of the best ongoings right now. I loved that this issue was more of a love letter to King Kull and his rule (my favorite part was with Conan and the Archer for obvious reasons). I'm really interested to see how the Black Stone ties into everything in Conan's present. I also think that Rob De La Torre has become THE artist for this book. I liked the previous arcs artist but De La Torre's art has become this book's identity. His art looks so fucking great.
Probably in the minority here but I enjoyed the latest issue of Ultimate Spider-Man.

Of the comics I pulled this week, I really enjoyed Conan, Tec, and Dawnrunner. Conan has been great so far. Rob's art is excellent, and Zub's writing is great too. I've been enjoying the Tec run for a while now, and so I've enjoyed this latest issue. Dawnrunner is great. Cagle's interior artwork is sweet. I've thought his current Tec covers are awesome.
I can't wait for the second issue of SSoC this week (from Zub too I think).
    Good Vid.

Duke #5 was an "OH SHIT!" issue for me. The B.A.T. was cool, but I LOVED Duke's reaction to learning Destro has nothing to do with Starscream; I thought Destro was gonna be furious that a one-many army found him over something he wasn't even responsible for, but it was actually Duke who was rattled when Destro said he's never heard of Starscream and Duke who lied to himself for a minute to still think Destro was his enemy. I LOVE how this whole series was the aftermath of a flippant game a literally larger-than-life out-of-towner played and forgot about...Especially if Starscream is dead as of Transformers #7 (he's probably not, but imagine if Duke did all of this for nothing and Soundwave avenged Frosting without even knowing or caring about him)! Duke wanting to leave the military behind rather than be pulled around by false-promises and dirty work was great, but deciding to get back in the game because he wants to kill all Transformers was a PHENOMENAL conclusion! Cobra Commander has his work cut out for him following up this ending with his own.

I agree with you guys on Duke, Conan, TMNT Saturday Too Long of a Title, and Wolverine Madripoor Knights. Great picks for best comics of the week. I will have to give Dawnrunner a look. You lost me at prestige format with "If You Find Me I'm Already Dead". There are very few books in my opinion that are improved by the prestige format. It often feels like an excuse for the comic publishers to charge more for a single issue and subsequent trades. I disagree with Feral. I don't know why so many are enamored with stories where animal characters are anthropomorphized in a normal world (at least go all the way and make the world the characters live in fantastical and not mundane). And you didn't even read the second issue. How can you blindly recommend it?
In place of Feral and the Matt Kindt book, I would have highlighted 4 other comics for best of the week. Pooh vs Bambi #1 was action-packed fun with anthropomorphized characters in a fantastical world. Cover C of Pooh vs Bambi would like to have a word with all of the special Feral covers you mentioned. Although the art is by no means amazing, I would recommend Dutch#3 to close out the mini-series and lead into the upcoming Blood Squad Seven series. I would give Drawing Blood #1 an honorable mentioned. And how in the bloody blue hell did you guys miss Dick Tracy #1? It was a good intro for people not familiar with Dick Tracy. The dialogue and amazing art style fit with the 1940s motif. The characterization of Dick Tracy is spot-on. I can't wait for him to use his communicator watch! You guys are sleeping on this one.
