    I agree totally about that Neutral Milk Hotel album - so much so I was going to suggest it as being very overrated. It never pulled me in and I’ve given it a few listens over the years too (as I’m constantly reminded how great it is by numerous articles and people). I hear very little redeeming qualities in it.
    I think the Beatles and the Stones are way overrated. Dylan too! Controversial I know. The typical reaction you get from fans is “what have you achieved in your meaningless life?” But I just find those artists to be really boring - perhaps because their music is played to death and leaves nothing unpredictable anymore.
    In terms of more modern artists I feel that Bjork is overrated. She employs and jumps on the back of other more talented musicians and steals their fire by incorporating them into her albums. I know other artists do that but I think she really milks other peoples talent and shuts all over what they do with her crazy screeching banshee voice. There was a period in the 90’s where her work was more valid, she was pixie pretty and had a unique voice but that appeal has wained and worn thin for me over the years and I find her annoying now.
    Out of curiosity - what do you consider to be truly underrated albums? Astonishing records yet criminally unknown or overlooked albums? You mentioned Killing Joke recently and I feel it has to be argued that theyve remained relatively unknown fir over 40yrs. A number of KJ albums are amazing and influential (to people in the know).

      Thanks for your comments! I see what you're saying about Bjork for sure. To her credit, I think she'd be the first to admit that what you say is true. I mean, without Nellee Hooper and Graham Massey and Plaid and Howie B and Mark Bell, where would she be? I love Bjork, but just saying. My next question I'm gonna pose to the community is what they think underrated albums are, so it's coming!

    The legitimate knock against Sgt. Pepper‘s I’ve heard it that it is- above all things- a technical accomplishment rather than a songwriting breakthrough. That the songs themselves are veering into pastiche seems a little odd given its legendary status in rock music.

      @@occasionalfeelgood23 I could not disagree more. I think When I'm 64 is an example of why McCartney is one of the greatest song writers of the 20th century. Tomorrow Never Knows, imo, is the perfect example of an overrated Beatles song. It's monotone and uninteresting, and leans on eastern spiritualist cliches.

    Great video and agree with the comment below that it would be good to see more over-rated albums being discussed in the future.
    Off the top of my head my pick would be Long Season by Fishmans - it's a nice enough album but I really, really don't get the excessive amount of love it receives.
    Anyway, looking forward to the Carl Craig video - Landcruising is one of my favourite albums of the '90s.

    Amigo, I respect you so much that I’m willing to give “Pet Sounds” another listen. I must clarify my issue with MJ other than the obvious, though struggle with separating the artist from his work. Admittedly, the struggle is real. I’m not that beesh who cancels (for the most part). I should have specified the album, buddy. If overrated was a spokesperson, I’d say MJ fits the mold post “Off The Wall”. Here’s where we agree: I LOVE “Off The Wall”. Also, you made an excellent point about the album cover from “Ten”, how they’re “slapping high-fives”. That album cover reminds me of a fake a$$ attempt at a team building photo that fails miserably.
    And your choice for “Rumors” was perfect! I almost listed it, too! Blame the skateboarding cholo for their resurgence! That damn album just won’t go away!

    I'm gonna put my head on block here but I think most of Beatles is overrated. But this is more in relation to HOW they are rated. John Lennon was right when he said the Beatles could have released a collection of farts and the music press would have wet themselves (not exactly, but....).And Pet Sounds came out before Sgt. Pepper which is just 40 minutes to psychedelic and chaotic nonsense. there, I said it :P.
    Interesting what you said about the grunge scene and AIC and Soundgarden in particular. To me, they were never part of the Nirvana/Pearl Jam "Seattle Sound". they were just bands that happened to come from Seattle. And also, they both were already well established when Nevermind came out and the music industry vultures descended on the city.... Personally, I think that Superunknown is one of the greatest rock albums ever, a modern (at the time) blend of Sabbath and Led Zep, it was and still is simply awesome. But with you growing up in the middle of it, I can see how all this went on your tits after a while. For me, growing up in Europe, Superunknown was a godsend and I still listen to it probably every month.
    Pink Floyd? Groundbreaking, especially for its time. Beyonce? I couldn't name you a single song of her. I don't mind Taylor Swift actually, she seems pretty smart in what she does and how she does it (i.e. re-recording all her stuff). I was kinda expecting you to mention Billie Eilish at one point. I think her stuff is something incredibly unique. I also happen to think that she and her brother have listened to Skinny Puppy a little....
    Keep up the good work. Loving all your Puppy, Ministry, Killing Joke stuff. I also wanna do a shameless plug for Kevin Key's Scaremeister sunday chats where he is interviewing other musicians from the 80s 90s era. Absolutely amazing stuff.
    Cheers.

    Sorry - I meant underrated albums. Can’t win here.
    Sisters of Mercy - YES! The only cool thing about them is their logo.
    Blood on the Tracks - I am a Bob Dylan fan (saw him with Willie!) but I cannot stand BOTT. I think it’s because everyone told me growing up that this IS the record I need by him and I HAVE to love it. Annoyed me to no end. Plus I found the songs too long. John Wesley is my favorite - short, sweet and to the point.
    Time Out! - I have nothing against Mr. Brubeck (he is quite accomplished) however this is like Carol King’s Tapestry in the jazz world for me. It was EVERYWHERE and I think there are other jazz artists that captivated me more.
    The Fugees - their biggest hit was a cover track. Only Soft Cell gets a pass on this (they are amazing).
    LCD Clownsystem - I hated them from the get go, but is there anything more pretentious than the track losing my Edge with the name dropping of his record collection? Plus, they admit the song rips off Killing Joke’s “Change” rhythm.
    Neutral Milk Breath - LOL thank you for summing up that record perfectly!
    Wilco - I was dragged to one of their shows, and everyone there was in cargo shorts and into crafting beer. It was horrible. Alt-rock for Cabela’s crowd.
    I love Pankow - I even screen printed patches with their logo on it thinking I would change their popularity (I was so wrong) 🤣
    Fantastic video sir!

    You called Kendrick Lamar tired music? Why?

    • @occasionalfeelgood23
      @occasionalfeelgood23  7 месяцев назад +2

      It's only my opinion, of course, but I find most all newer hip hop to be this way. It's very derivative, very narcissistic, and has absolutely zero originality. It really hasn't evolved in 30 years, and that's my personal issue. Lamar is just part of it. I was obsessed with hip hop and rap in the early days, but the danger has been taken out of it. It's to the point where you're hearing mumble rap on Burger King commercials now, for god's sake. Hip hop isn't about honesty anymore, it's about endorsement deals. Hip hop should be dangerous, but it's become the polar opposite. Uncomfortable honesty was the entire point of hip hop when it started. Kendrick Lamar represents a type of music that's accepted by all factions, and to me, that represents a tired old exhausted idea. People seem to think he's cutting edge or something, but he's no more cutting edge than Taylor Swift. I understand that all forms of music change and evolve (or devolve), but in terms of hip hop, it's mostly become watered down top 40 drivel.

    • @demetrisgalides
      @demetrisgalides 7 месяцев назад

      @@occasionalfeelgood23 Interesting thay you say that, because Kendrick is the opposite of watered down music. I agree with you about the fact that what is on the radio is just mind numbing garbage. However, an album like To Pimp A Butterfly, deserves all the praise it gets. As a music fan, I urge you to listen again! The way it blends jazz, funk, soul, hip hop and r&b is genuinely impressive. Also the lyrical ability to explore issues of systemic oppression and how that affects the individual's self worth (also seen on Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers) never ceases to amaze me. He perfected the art of the hip hop concept album, the attention to detail is immaculate and the danger aspect of it, is there for me. Both in terms of the sound and the lyrics. In many ways he is a continuation of legends like Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest and Dr. Dre

      @@demetrisgalides Okay, I will! I promise I'll make the time to do that, and thanks for your comment. It's hard for me to get into any newer hip hop, but that's my issue, not so much the music's fault, and I totally admit that. I actually like Lamar's personal story -- the dude clearly has risen from the ashes, and I have respect for him for that. He made a nice life for himself and I'd never criticize anyone for doing that.

    Beach Boys IS overrated whiny music. Pop music in general is shit, rappers and Beyonce and whatever this weeks singing lady is shit.
    I agree with MJ, people have forgotten how short his musical career really was. He's fame was really due to his strangeness/creepyness.

      I'd argue Pearl Jam was just another version of 80s hair rock, but I get what you're saying. I knew I'd take a hit for not liking Pearl Jam, but I can't help but feel they were a pre-packaged product for the music industry as they scrambled to sell more records to the bleary-eyed public. I only mentioned bands that others who watch my channel brought up, but yes, I agree with Rush. They were right there behind Fleetwood Mac for me. And your take on pop music is right on, I can't argue with you on that, haha. "Whatever this week's singing lady", haha. You nailed it. @@occasionalfeelgood23 I think it was a mad dash at the record companies to sign bands with the same type of sound (grunge..) once Nirvana hit. Most of these band are produced an recorded by the same people, so yes of course it was a case of jumping on a trend and finding a product to sell. But all in all I thing the talent scouts picked some pretty good bands, they all ready had a sound and I would argue as musicians they where lightyears ahead of the hair metal bands. Even though I hate what Matt Cameron is doing in PJ, i love his odd time work with Soundgarden. PJ also had a killer drummer in Dave Abbruzzese, just listening to him groove on that unplugged session is great fun 30 years after. Have PJ stood the test of time? By no means, I fell off years ago.
