  • Block Upgrade To Windows 11
A lot of people don't want to update Windows 10 to Windows 11 and the certainly don't want to be bombarded with pop ups trying to trick or force them into upgrading to Windows 11 from Windows 10. Lately Microsoft have started to force tricky ads about getting a free upgrade to Windows 11 and you have to decline or you run the risk of starting the Windows 11 upgrade process off. I will show you step by step on block and disabling these forced upgrade ads by Microsoft.
Open registry and navigate to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
Add DWORD (32-bit) Value TargetReleaseVersion and give it a value data of 1
Then add a String Value called TargetReleaseVersionInfo and give it the version of Windows you want to stay on example 21H2
You can also set group policy if you are running Windows 10 Pro and above
Local Computer Policy / Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Windows Update / Windows Update for Business
Double-click on Select the target Feature Update version in the right panel
    Enable the feature
    Version = Windows 10
Target Version for Feature Updates = 21H2 or version you want to stay on.
    Now restart computer.

I really don't think any tech giants care if they antagonize users and this will open profitable opportunities for less annoying options. I hope the less annoying ones gain traction as it seems to me that a lot of new technologies & processes are not user friendly and just plain aggravating.

This is why I'll probably just not even allow security updates. I think I'd honestly rather get robbed of everything I have then be forced to upgrade to Windows 11. If we're ever forced off of Windows 10 completely and forced to use windows 11, I will just pull out my absolute last resort and install Linux instead

Do this and pause all other updates that pop up, even if they are for security whatnot. All it does is to download useless files to you C drive and clog it, couple gigabytes at a time. So even if you stayed on Windows 10 they can still fuck up your computer, sadly. Don't be surprised if your windows 11 or 12 decides to hide you c drive, like how new Android hides the data folder.

So Brian what if the version of 10 is updated to say for example 21H3 will that be stopped or is this just a way of stopping those reminders which fortunately I do not get for some reason except that one in Settings/ Update which just tells me my machine is capable of going to 11? It just seems to me it is getting quite ambiguous in what they are trying to do.

There is not a 21H3. 21 for 2021 H2 for July - December. Have you done manual check for Updates?

@@edwarddonnelly2937 Ho Edward I was speaking hypothetically when I mentioned 21H3 I didn't mean there was going to be a version. While they cannot seem to make up their minds it leaves one wondering where the next hit will be coming from😉

Thanks for this it should help allot. I suspected that Widows would eventually start forcing or conning people into switching to Windows 11. I am not sure what the adoption rate has been for Win11 but considering you have to own a fairly new PC with TPM enabled to run it I imagine it's low. I haven't enabled the TPM on my MoBo I was hoping that by having TPM disabled it would discourage Windows from pushing a Win11 "upgrade" on me. I have a Linux PC I use as well for the last 5 years and plan to abandon Windows completely once Win 10 is no longer supported. Good Luck ppl!

Any registry hacks are usually disabled the next update you do on your Windows. So it may be valid for a few weeks or months but it's just a temp measure for sure.

Ideally you just break wuauserv so you don't receive updates. But you gotta break BITS as well, because that will repair wuauserv if the service is stopped or intentionally corrupted. All you do is open both services and enter junk data to their data fields. Make sure to back up the data so you can revert later, since there's no service that will repair BITS.

What's the best method between turning off TPM in BIOS and using the Group policy? My two kids setups (Both B550) run win10 21H2, and I don't want them on win11, at least not yet. Does one method have advantages over the other or? (I do quite happily play in the BIOS/overclock etc).

With Windows Pro does inserting this configuration in the Group Policy Editor automatically add the entry in the Registry to block updates or is it a case of just doing one or the other?

I'd been getting notices to upgrade to Win 11 but I was clicking out and ignoring it. My PC was refusing to update my Graphics Drivers , "Pending Install of Windows 11". I discovered this when I was having issues with my AMD driver while gaming & I finally decided to update the driver. Sneaky Windows/MS lock nme out and causing issues while gaming. This video couldn't have come at a better time. I have no idea what I'll do when MS refuses to support Windows 10?

What if the next Windows 10 security update undoes what we just did in Group Policy Editor (because not upgrading to Windows 11 is deemed a security issue), thus allowing Windows 11 to be installed anyway?

In my (probably frequent) case, I just bought a new PC, chosen because it had Windows 10 Pro.
But on 1st start, it asks a few things like region, language, keyboard, network connection, then says it will go to updates... with NO OPTION to skip!! No way to do anything else, no menu etc!!
After a few apparently benign "updates" it says it will install Windows 11; it doesn't tell if Home or Pro, but displays 3 paragraphs telling the supposed advantages of Win11, then the "Next" button, with no option to abort or skip, no menu, absolutely no way to escape.
So I tried the good old "Ctrl+Alt+Del", no response, it doesn't work anymore! so I did a hard abort via the On/Off hardware button.
But when I restart the PC, it immediately goes to the same page with the Update to Win11, the 3 §'s and the "Next" button.
Anyone can tell me how to get out? If no way I am ready to send back the new PC. It was for me just a way to save time, but by starting that way this will NOT be a time saver at all, my good old 2013 Latitude e6440 with its Windows 7 is not as slow as a super hardware crippled down by Windows 11.
