Ive had that happen to my hair twice so far, people that dont understand wavy hair just like to hack it off. The first time it happened she cut my hair to my shoulders when it was more than halfway down my back, i cried while i was in the chair it was traumatizing and it took me years to attempt another cut. The second time i tried it happened again but not as much hacked off but it was definitely crooked snd looked crazy. So i can sympathize, and ive cut my hair myself for over ten years now.

It takes more technique to cut longer hair and time to do it properly. Time = money.
There are salons that don't have gendered prices but rather hair length prices, but for now those are rare because it doesn't make much sense since there's like maybe tops 1% of men with long hair who visit salons. I've been working as a hairdresser for 5 years and only had 2 male clients with hair that's a bob length or longer.

An almost horror story: the last time I went to a regular salon for a trim, I saw my stylist reach for a bottle that wasn't the 'spray' one that she'd been using to keep my hair wet. I asked her what it was and she replied 'a curl relaxer'. WHAT?! I almost shot out of that chair like I'd just gotten an electric shock. I didn't ask for the 'anti perm'! She'd heard me compliment her last appointment (a lovely lady of Asian descent with pin-straight hair) who'd just gotten a layered cut that beautifully showed off her bone structure and took that to mean that I wanted hair like that. Whooo-boy! Did I set her straight. I love my curls and my days of wishing for flat-ironed hair are FAR behind me. I sat back down and as politely as possible informed this woman that it would be a veerrryyy good idea to verify that her client wants to permanently change the composition of their hair before she reaches for a chemical straightener. Find a curly stylist my friends-it's worth it.

I don't know what the heck went through that womens mind. I feel like if that was me, I would notice too late. But boy, would I be mad. I love my curls more than anything, and it's surpising how many people think that natural curls are not something we want. But honestly this is why I am scared of hairstylists. I would love to cut it myself, but I feel like I would screw it up. I have 3a 3b curls and I have no idea what might happen if I cut off an inch, or gave myself layers to lighten the weight so my hair isn't pulled down. Thank goodness you noticed before she put that to your hair!!!!!

That's why I take consultation time before cutting a clients hair, I need to know their routine and care and how to help them to not need to go to a hairdresser each month aside from teaching them how to cut their hair because I didn't spend 3 years in school for nothing.

I've not found perfect hairstylist yet, but I currently don't even need one, because I went ahead and chopped off all of my hair in the summer! It was badly damaged because of the relaxers I've been using. I decided to stop doing that in March, let my hair grow out a bit and cut it in August! I've been very happy ever since. (It cost about 80 dollars tho)
You were actually one of the reasons I became confident enough to embrace my natural hair! I admired (and still do of course) how you handle your hair and everything related to it and that really inspired me. Seeing how you had a little breakdown, because that stylist fucked up your locks was honestly very reassuring, as it reminded me of my own after I washed my hair without using a relaxer for the first time...It was really horrible lol.
This comment is getting really long so- thank you for giving us advice and sharing your experiences!

@@poshniall that would be low porosity not high. High loses moisture quickly. And you are right, listen to your curls. LOVE YOUR CUT!!! But then again your hair is always on point! Ok...I have to just say that I had my first curly haircut about 2 weeks ago...Heres how it went down...I was following the social media accounts of some curly hair salons near me as 1. It was virtually impossible to get in for an appointment just as you mentioned in your video & 2. I had the money for the curly haircut ($150 for the owner to cut my hair) BUTTTTT I spent it while waiting 😂😂😂😂 Then at about 9pm on a Sunday night I seen a post pop up that said 'Curly hair models wanted for tomorrow @11am, send us an email with your photo, name & number.' Literally tripped over myself emailing and sending to get the spot-GOT THE SPOT!! So in I go to the salon I had been waiting months to get into but was getting my haircut by a stylist in training(she'd been a stylist for 15yrs just new in the curly hair game.) BUTTTT...because the owner(who i'd been waiting to pay $150 to cut my hair) ended up doing half my haircut(and style) herself showing the stylist what to do!! 😂😂 Point of this long @$$ post is get hooked into the curly salons social media accounts...heck email them and ask if they ever need curly models to contact you and be ready to call in sick to work 😂😂

Now I'm like you and don't complain when I throw down $75 once or twice a year for a really good haircut. It's also been really helpful to learn how to trim and shape my own hair, especially my curtain bangs and fringe. Maybe you could do a video on the best way to maintain these haircuts at home.

Also if you arent able to access a curl specialist general things to ask are to have your hair bevelled (shaped for volume), layered particularly around the face and to have the ends cut in a U sort of shape. All of these are things that reduce the chance of looking like a triangle and also give volume and shape to your hair
