My aunt was obese. She wasn’t born a big baby either. She really didn’t start putting on weight until she was about 11 or 12 yrs old. It was sad because teenagers were so mean to her that the bus driver made my aunt sit at the steps of the bus. Punishing her and not the bullies. She never married and never had kids. So she spoiled her niece and nephews. She was a awesome aunt. I really miss her. I was actually closer to her then my own mom because certain things I couldn’t talk to my mom about but I could talk to my aunt about and my aunt never told my mom.

There was an old bootlegger woman, Mahala Mullins, in Hancock County, TN who died about 1932. She was so big she couldn't get out of her cabin. The Sheriff got an arrest warrant to have her arrested. But since she couldn't get out of her cabin, the deputy came back without her. He told the Sheriff, "She's catchable, but no fetchable!" Lol. When she died, they had to break down a wall and pull her out on her bed (which they had to convert to a coffin), and drag her to the grave with a team of mules. I have no idea how much she weighed, but Mahala was HUGE!

I recall my father having a book of “circus freaks” and Robert Earl was featured, they perpetuated the story that he was buried in a piano case.

Wow, I can’t imagine how painful it must have been to give birth to an 11lb baby. Back in the day when they didn’t have epidurals or strong enough pain meds. He certainly didn’t have a good life. I’m sure he was bullied for his weight.

My sister was over 12 pounds at birth. She’s now in her early 60s, four foot eight and 90 pounds. Birth weight really means nothing.

Loved this story. I was told stories about Earl when I was a kid growing up near there in a town called Chambersburg. If you're close to there I know there's a tiny little grave yard on a hill with some interesting stories.

That IS quite a big baby. Hearing how big he was at his biggest literally made me react with "Daaammn" a la "Friday." Not to be insensitive, of course. It was just a knee-jerk reaction. He seems to have been a pretty decent guy. RIP, Robert. 🙏

11lb is out of the ordinary. Let 11lbs come out yo couchie then call it "not out of the ordinary."

I know this is grotesque but when he starting decomposing imagine how much liquid remained for his weight

Nice story line and done is a respectful way, the man did what he could to earn money, the over weight was too much for his heart.

One patient we actually were able to weigh on the scales that are used to weigh clothes and found him to be over 1100 pounds. 1000lbs are all shut in's and to get them out, we would have to bring down the whole wall and use a flat bed to get them to the ED.
