Look at that scene as you approach the trolly. It is dynamic, colorful and interesting. With potential for kinetic magic. Imagine no trolley. It is just some boring corner.
When I was a child growing up in Palos Verdes we would go to downtown Los Angeles to see the Christmas windows. We would ride the “red car”. I will never forget going downtown to ride them one last time before they were retired. As my daughter constantly tells me growing up in the 60’s I was very lucky
Yes, the red car was the way to get around. I heard many stories about it and also heard people who complained about RTD buses and would say the red cars were so much better. I actually came across an old token that my grandmother had saved but I think my father took it and who knows what happened to it. Do you remember exactly what they looked like?
@@makingnewdreamscometrue The red car absolutely! As if it were yesterday. I liked standing up holding onto the pole. Of course I was a “little squirt “ as my Dad would say so he sat and held onto me so I could stand. The cold breeze made it so much more exciting and the Christmas windows with all the moving parts were magical I also miss the ferry that one could drive one’s car onto to get to Terminal Island before there was the Vincent Thomas bridge. What a way to spend the best day with my dad
Where did you catch the PE to downtown? The last one ran into Redondo Beach in 1940. Most people in PV don't know that the PE would have had tracks all the way around if it were not for 1929 stock market crash!

When I was in DCA in January, I had no idea the trolleys actually worked. When I first went into the park I thought it was just a photo op, then I saw one running and my jaw actually dropped.
The "PE" or "Red Car" was only well known to locals. Residents in the basin born before 1950 are the only ones with first had any knowledge of this massive rail system. The Red Car connected every town from Pasadena to San Pedro all the way to Seal Beach. Before WW2 there were only bean fields, citrus orchards and swamp land between these well connected towns. My Dad was born in Compton in the early 30's and grew up in Monrovia. He told me they could get anywhere in SoCal in less than an hour back in the day. Sadly the bus became king by the 60's and the Red Car was gone by 1965. Much of the current light rail system in the basin today runs on the same right of way the PE did... As always, well done Chris.....Thanks.....
I got the opportunity to ride The Red Car Trolley in March of this year and it was excellent. What really amazes me about this is the history behind this ride. Trains in the 30's had it's ups and downs of transportation on these vehicles. I am very sad to see this one go and it will forever be in my heart.
Hi. I'm new here and wanted to thank you for your message to people about how irreplaceable they are. It's important to take a step back occasionally from all this Disney mania to talk about what's really important - people. For people feeling blue, just remember there's a new sunrise & beautiful sunset every day. They'll make a new one every 24 hours. So hang in there. The entire universe would have to be recreated just to make someone as special as you.
So glad I got to ride this. I was at Disneyland for my first time this past weekend all the way from Georgia. So happy to meet you Chris on Thursday. You were so sweet when I told you about my son Brandon. Didn’t mean to be so emotional. Thanks for all you do.

Sad to see them go!!! I always thought they should have made a track that circled DCA. We had an original PE train that ran in Ports O Call San Pedro years back. They shut it down to renovate Port s of Call, but eventually they decided to not get it running again.
I remember the painted desert AND 2:38 that crazy rock that rolled around .. I also rode the mules in Disneyland.. yes they had mule rides lol ALL THATS GONE !!!
I'll surely miss the colorful red trolley in motion on my next trip there in Jan. 2025.. The same way I missed the people mover, The skyway ,the rockets spinning, all that colorful motion that grabs the eye upon entering the happiest place on earth!
This was a great video! Very informative. I've only ridden the Red Car once in 2013 as far as I can remember. Maybe I will book a trip in the next few months and ride it again before it retires.
I rode it on my first ever trip to Disneyland this past week. It’s such a charming addition to the park. Buena Vista Street is such a lovely homage to California and without the trolley it will feel a lot different.
I had the opportunity to ride the Red Car Trolley from where we lived in an outer part of Inglewood to downtown Inglewood and back with my Mom when I was a little girl. On one of our visits to DCA, we rode the trolley together from the beginning stop near the entrance of DCA to the end of the line and back again when Avengers Campus wasn't even a publicly discussed thought. Will be there the last week of October and will ride it again in the hope that Disney finds a way of keeping it and just changes or shortens the route so that we can continue to enjoy it. If not, have each of the two trolleys in different spots for photo-ops.
Why do they keep thinking its okay to destroy the original parts of Disney. 😢😢 i like the new rides but taking away something that is so original to DCA is not cool. The sound of the trolley is a recognisable part of DCA, I could listen with my eyes closed and know where is was. They should just run one down the main street section only. New ideas should not takeaway core Disney touches
So true. Why don't they just find a space somewhere for the barn? And at the very least, yes, keep the trolley near the front of DCA. I hope they are just saying permanently, then once Avengers Campus is near completion, they just say "fool you" and bring it back again.
I love all the old time transportation modes. Over at Disneyland the Horse Cart is my favorite . When I get over to DCA it's the trolley. I will miss it😢 Thanks for always being positive and uplifting Chris. Your little segments of positive affirmations can really make a difference to someone having a not so good day. Today was that day for me. Thanks for making my day better! 😊
Chris, if you go to the Southern California Train Museum they have the original 717. Every DCA train conductors and motormen get to go out and drive the original. You can make arrangements to drive it yourself. Lastly, there are two original ticket booths from Disneyland there too. Saw and learned all this from Justin Scarred.
Chris, I can remember back in the early 70's they asphalt over the other tracks that they had back then, because the trolleys back in those days went all over Disneyland. They even went into Chinatown in Disneyland. I'm sad to see the trolleys go bye bye,but never forgotten.
I'm watching this on what was supposed to be my first day in Disneyland ever. Unfortunately, it just wasn't meant to be because my mom is on hospice and I lost my dog to cancer. We thought since we bought the special 3 day deal that is only good until Sept. 26 that we would lose the money for the tickets but Disney allows that money to stay on the account as long as the tickets don't get scanned in to the park so that was an amazing surprise. Hopefully, I will be able to visit at some point in the future. Unfortunately, it will be after the Red Car Trolleys are gone. Thank you so much for making this video!
Disney should take the trollies and spread around the park and maybe even in Fort Wilderness so people have places to rest and like you said, take some pictures. You got some extra exercise today!, 😂
I have been on the red cars in downtown Long Beach. Mid 1950’s. What a big step up for a little girl! On foggy or drizzly days the sparks would fly where the electricity connects over the trolly.
