    Whiplash is a 2014 American drama film written and directed by Damien Chazelle. It depicts the relationship between an ambitious jazz drumming student (Miles Teller) and an abusive instructor (J. K. Simmons).
    Whiplash premiered in competition in the US Dramatic Category at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival on January 16, 2014, as the festival's opening film.[4] Sony Pictures Worldwide acquired the international distribution rights.[5] The film opened in limited release domestically in the United States and Canada on October 10, 2014, gradually expanding to over 500 screens and finally closing on March 26, 2015. The film grossed $49 million on a production budget of $3.3 million.
    The film received widespread critical acclaim, with particular praise for Simmons's performance and Chazelle's screenplay. At the 87th Academy Awards, Whiplash won Best Film Editing (Tom Cross, ACE), Best Sound Mixing, and Best Supporting Actor for Simmons, and was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture.

Then he moves to the timeline and creates an in-point at the end of the last shot. Then he hits insert, and voila, he has done an edit."

    Hey, I just wanted to say thanks! I found your channel last night because I've been on a struggle to find any sort of work (over a year) and I was just looking for ways to improve my mindset on editing and how to approach it. I originally saw the video "WHAT IT TAKES To Edit Big TV Shows" and that video got me to start BINGING ALL your videos lol. It's always interesting to hear people's story in this industry because it's almost always unique. Hearing how Josh was doing weddings, then became an AE, and made a breakthrough from being nice to a PA was just amazing. Your channel has given me some sort of hope hearing stories like Josh and the one you mention of Tom in this video. Thanks again for the content and keep doing your thing!

  • @calebdrew5684
    @calebdrew5684 5 лет назад +78

    Is this a breakdown of the editing or the writing? I feel like we're discussing the layout of these scenes from a writer's perspective. No disrespect, I know it won an Oscar for editing and this is an editing channel, so I'm wondering why we're going through the choices the screenwriter made and not the specific cuts and why they are placed. Great movie and I'm genuinely interested.

    • @rahulrajeev3731
      @rahulrajeev3731 5 лет назад +8

      While that is true to an extend, i feel the last draft of the script is done by the editor, especially how he can build and drop momentum at any time, and thereby engage the audience. That is what is mostly discussed. I feel if the choice of cuts are all that are left to an editor, it would make the process very dry and give too much importance to storyboard writer.

    • @calebdrew5684
      @calebdrew5684 5 лет назад +4

      @@rahulrajeev3731 that's a fair sentiment. However this film was written and directed based on his original short film so I feel like many of these choices were in fact carefully chosen by the screenwriter. I don't mean to diminish the role of the editor in affecting the pace and feel of a scene. They cannot however create moments that are integral to character development, but enhance their apparent significance.

    Actually, I would argue that where the film feels more like a fight/boxing scene is in the final scene, where Andrew is trying to take control of the concert and he has to do it by playing perfectly, wrestling with the power that Fletcher has to shut him down on the spot. The way that the film is edited in that last scene, for me, really conveys the whole struggle that he is going through, and how that is his way of beating Fletcher. And by beating him, he finally earns his respect.
