For those choosing between this or the Steam Deck for retro-emulation I’d like to throw in my 2 cents as to why the Odin2 is a no brainer for people like me:
I was born in ‘98 so Gameboy Advance - PS1/Dreamcast/ - PS2/Gamecube - PSP are THE most nostalgic consoles for me. I own a retriod pocket 3plus, a Steam Deck (since launch), an Odin, and an Odin2 (since launch).
While I was initially most excited for my Steam Deck, I ended up spending more hours on my Odin2 (which is wild bc Ive owned the Steam Deck for 3x as long).
    1) If you have a modern gaming PC already, I recommend skipping the Steam Deck and getting the Odin2. The Steam Deck does more than the Odin2 but it just doesnt do retro-emulation or running side apps (like spotify/youtube/etc) as ergonomically or as smoothly as the Odin2.
    2) Initial emulation setup is easier on the Steam Deck by a long shot which might be off-putting, BUT with the Daijisho launcher and available online guides, all the apps and emulators and roms become the easiest thing EVER to access and makes the Steam Deck’s UI look clunky in comparison. So long term, the Odin2 wins out in that regard in my opinion.
    3) The Steam Deck is a big boy. Too big for me. When I’m out in public I feel like a total goober. I kinda feel the same when I’m walking around with the Switch. But with the Odin2, It almost feels like a slightly bigger PSP which I really like. But yeah it’s a modest size, so longer gaming sessions on an Odin2 is going to be significantly more comfortable.
    4) Battery life is superior on the Odin2 by far. It charges faster than a Steam Deck and it lasts like 3x/4x longer. My Odin2 lasted me 2 airplane flights and then some on a single charge (including the uber to the airport), and the Steam deck lasted me the Uber ride back and the short time I spent waiting in the terminal for my flight.
    5) The Odin2 is a DEDICATED mobile and emulation experience. The Steam Deck’s strength lies in it being a more affordable and efficient way to play modern steam deck approved games with the option to play on the go. While that sounds amazing at first, you wouldnt really be missing out on much due to the Switch undocked mode and playstation remote play being a thing for other consoles. Yes Steam has it’s own exclusives that stretch multiple generations of consoles but when you’re on the go it’s not like you’re typically looking to play competitive titles especially when the major hype around the SteamDeck I’ve heard in my personal social circles seems to be it’s emulation potential.
It’s by no means a bad console the Steam Deck. But as someone who prefers his established PC/PS5/Switch setup for a modern, cinematic gaming experience, I think retro games suit portable consoles best. And retro emulation for nearly every console (besides DS/3DS due to their dual screens) is simply the most streamlined experience on the Odin2

Solid points. Plus with being able to stream AAA games to the Odin from my gaming pc, I get the best of both worlds getting to play games on max settings on my couch or in bed and since the odin isn’t doing the processing the battery lasts forever. Such a game changer

Friendly Tip : DO NOT buy the white version Odin 2. The plastic quality is bad and absorbs everything that it touches that is a different color. Mine became red after swiping the screen with a microfiber cloth used for glasses. So I tried that same cloth of a white ps5 controller...and it did leave some red color as well, but it was super easily wiped off with an alcohol wipe....but on the Odin 2, its IMPOSSIBLE to clean, I tried alcohol wipe, even toothpaste and ended up damaging the shell finish even more, but the red stains didnt come out. I regret not buying the black model. I paid so much money to have the Max model too, and now after 2 weeks it looks like crap.

In my opinion I think Odin 2 is a device that all of people who grew up playing and owned PS2, GameCube, Wii Odin 2 is the device we all been dreaming for. *Being able to play PS2, GCN, Wii and more retro handheld seemed like a pipe-dream when we were younger now we have device that is capable of emulating them. And that's truly amazing and mind-blowing*
And I have no doubt as technology advances and we get smaller and powerful chipset combined that more powerful and energy efficient processors and graphics card be it for mobile devices. Or gaming laptop *One day the dream isn't far off when we can play PS3 and Wii U and perhaps emulating PS4 on handheld console but that will probably take another 10-15 years from now I'm guessing!*

I currently have an Aya Neo Geek 1s as well, but for some reason I really want this Odin 2. And I'm not sure why? I wouldn't have access to certain emulation (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, etc), or PC games...but the Odin 2 seems like it would be more inviting because of its lighter weight, 1080p screen (as opposed to the 800p in the Geek), and smaller frame. I've been really hoping for a device that would let me play Harvest Moon Animal Parade(a Wii game I played a lot on my wii & is my favorite game in the Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons series) on the go, I have a Steam Deck(in hopes handheld would get me to play some of my games more) but it's pretty big & I've played it on my phone but the battery isn't as good. It's nice that this could be an option for emulation, might be interested in the Switch emulator but might take some time. These things suck for anyone expecting their device to work out of the box for such a high price, especially given the fact it's that expensive even without an OLED screen. For the uninitiated, they require a few hours of setup via carefully reading setup walkthroughs and sideloading and scouring the internet for BIOS files... Naaaaaah, fuck.....that...... The Chinese company (AYN) pumping these midrange Android tablets out with input laggy joysticks attached don't even bundle the device with any games for the price they're charging. If budget and size is not an issue then I'd definitely pick the Odin 2 Base. It's just an extremely well made handheld and does all the GC, Wii and PS2 you could want, and a good amount of Switch, but a lot of the reasons why Switch games won't run or run well will be the emulator -- and is still in development. And the battery life is excellent. If you wanna do a lot more retro then the RP4's dpad on top over the stick is very nice.

Do switch games still have stutter or occasions where the games need to load up such as metrpid prime? On pc it seems to need to render and does still stutter a bit. So id like to know if android makes it seemless. Looks amazing

    • @-roetaka
      @-roetaka  Год назад

With higher end emulation there's a few reasons why it might occur: one is shader cacheing and a lot of systems will stutter to save that shader information, we are essentially streaming the shader information as it comes to us in gameplay. Games like Call of Duty make us pre-install shaders to prevent this from happening, so it's just an inevitability in emulation that it might stutter...maybe if handhelds had SSD storage it might be better. Two is the emulator just needs to be improved to get the game working more, Yuzu for Android is still in development and they've made big improvements recently which I'll do a video on next. Lastly is a system just isn't powerful enough to handle the games its trying to play...but I'm quite confident that even the base model of the Odin 2 can handle most emulation that's thrown at it.
