  • In 1793, as England prepares for war with France, young Horatio Hornblower reports for duty aboard the battleship Justinian. His welcome to the Kings Navy is harsh, however, as the sadistic midshipman Simpson takes an instant dislike to the young sailor.
    Transferred to the Indefatigable when war erupts, Hornblower proves his mettle in combat and catches the eye of the captain. But his career is threatened when they come upon the flaming wreckage of the Justinian and Simpson is among the survivors. On a vital mission, Simpsons treachery nearly costs Hornblower his life, and a final showdown is inevitable.
    Starring Ioan Gruffud as Hornblower. Based on the novels by C.S. Forester. All rights reserved to A&E--I own nothing. Description taken from the back of the DVDs.

      The proper technique is to stand to one side, toes clear of the wheels, lean over the barrel, sight the target, stand up quickly and *then* say "fire." Breeching ropes sometimes fail. A cannon with a service load and a real 24 pound ball will leap back and slam against the ropes.
      But hey, on TV the cannons are held in place by plot armor.

      Although the series is not faithful to the first three books. For example the last two episodes in the series is not what is written within Hornblower and the Hotspur. Pellew was not in command of the Channel Squadron and did not promote Hornblower to the rank of Commander but Admiral Cornwallis. Another key point was that Hornblower was hold as a POW for a period of seven years before earning his release and was promoted to Lieutenant during the time.

    I like the scene where Simpson keeps insulting Hornblower's honor, calling him a coward and all. Simpson is a petty bully at heart, and "rules" with fear. He interprets Hornblower's silence as confirmation that Hornblower fears him and persists in his insults, "solidifying" his power over Hornblower, or so he believes. But then Captain Pellew informs him that Hornblower has been ordered to not engage in duels and Simpson realizes that Hornblower doesn't fear him. It's all conveyed in a small second on screen with a glance, but that is the moment Simpson understands that he has no power over Hornblower.

    Captain Pellew must be a remarkable marksman hitting Simpson dead center with a smoothbore musket at 100 yards. Then again, Captain Pellew is one of my favorite characters. He's hard-as-nails, bookish, blunt, quick to anger but underneath an honorable God fearing man. You can see he sympathetically looks over dead sailors and is quite hurt finding out Eggleston and Kennedy were among the fallen. It's a captain you're nervous around who demands perfection but you'd follow him anywhere by his presence and leadership.

      The cannons are prevented from recoiling too far back by ropes. You just have to know how far back that is. Senior officers were always able to purchase private weapons of far better class (think Purdey) than those issued to the troops.
      Rifles fell into this category.
      Even during WW1 the British only started sniping effectively when they got far more accurate weapons that were bought by officers for "private hunting".

    What a Series of Book's & Stories, by CS Forester. They were of the Main Character? First Midshipman young Horatio Hornblower, & on until He became A Captain.
    The AMC Mini Series, I only Had the Pleasure of Viewing about Half the Episode's. They were Great & Exceptionally, Outstanding. IT would really be Nice? To see the Few Film's with Mr Gregory Peck, as Mr Hornblower. Again say on UTUBE. Or another Channel available.
    If not? Thank You for providing these Excellent Short Reminders, of the Stories. A Very Grateful. Wyoming, Robert, 🇨🇦🇺🇸🇨🇦🇺🇸🇨🇦🇺🇸🤔👀👀👍👍🤔🙏🙏🙏

    It was common practice to fly the enemy colors and it wasn't considered unfair. Both sides did it. Part of the Captain's job was trying to figure out who was really friend or foe because the colors didn't necessarily mean anything.

      In 21st century, false flag attack is a war crime based on international convention

    • @DavBlc7
      @DavBlc7 2 года назад +5

      @@Brian-fw9ly Not a crime if false flag would be to fool the enemy then just before attack raised true flag.
      In World War 2 an old British warship disguised as German warship, flying a German naval flag, went into a German held drydock in France and raised the British Naval flag before she crashed into the drydock.
      They then left the ship which has loads of bombs loaded in her. The ship later blown up destroyed the drydock which would intended for Germany's biggest warship. It was never repaired until after the war was over.

    • @jakechinn6561
      @jakechinn6561 2 года назад +2

      @@SvenTviking Yeah there was some obscure naval treaty even back then that I can't recall off the top of my head. Generally false flags were used to draw the enemy into firing range before the true flag was risen. Chasing enemy vessels could take days and warships would struggle to catch smaller vessels, like supply ships, hence the need for surprise.

    Not enough credit is given to actor Robert Lindsay aka Capt. Edward Pelew (Please correct if I got his name wrong).
    Of course the entire cast is fantastic!
    Ioan Grufud; ALL of them.
    Of course the later novels MUST be done of the older Hornblower with the now older Grufud. In fact; I'd like to see them as movies!
    I would happily pay and take time from my day to watch at a theater.
    Something I quite frankly don't do anymore.
    Lindsay is phenomenal and gives more to the series more than most of us fans can understand or appreciate.

      He's every bit as good or better at being convincing than the lead actor. Maybe the director over coached Grufud to be unsure of himself most of the time.
