Nina Diaz: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- August 26, 2016 by FELIX CONTRERAS • When I first saw Nina Diaz back in 2010, she was fronting a punk trio from San Antonio called Girl In A Coma. She and the band sounded ferocious, with an unmistakable spirit of fun - for proof, here's their Tiny Desk concert from a couple years later.
Now, Girl In A Coma has taken a short and temporary break so Diaz could work on the inevitable solo album - and it sounds as if the break has been good for everyone all around. The other two women in the band, Diaz's sister Phannie and their compadre Jenn Alva, continue to work on a variety of side projects and recordings. (Don't sleep on their new group and album, both of which are called Fea.)
As a solo artist, Diaz finds new ways to sound ferocious, this time via songs packed with the kind of subtleties that come with a bit of age and wisdom. Her new album is due out in the fall, but she's been out on the road with her new band as they figure out how to make the new material come alive on the stage.
Judging from what we saw behind Bob Boilen's desk recently, it seems they've gotten comfortable with the music, and with Diaz's newfound status as a solo singer-songwriter.

Big thanks to Nina who helped me ID everyone!
@@helpfulcommenter - In the absence of shrieking outbursts, we can rule that out.
The REAL deal...such emotion, passion and determination.and attitude.....she absolutely believes in her music....why is this not on the radio?
I was always a fan of Girl In A Coma, her new solo stuff sounds equally great.
Same here.
i miss girl in a coma :(
thanks NPR TDC for being a stage for everyone because I wouldn't be exposed to artist like this if I'm left to my own devices.
I can't understand why she's not like SUPER famous!
God that is one strong voice
such a gem of a voice. heard it for the first time at age 14 and been enamored ever since.
She is a awesome down to earth person. She is very beautiful. Had the opportunity to she perform at Ace's.
I recently discovered Girl In A Coma and have been nonstop on it.
"I wrote that song on January 9th, and it's called January 9th."
I wonder what she was doing when she wrote Dig...
Reppin' mu hometown of San Antonio!! Met her many times. She's just so lovely
Beautiful place
Keep San Antonio lame !!!!!!!
The fact that didn’t know Nina was on Tiny Desk until now.💔
Nina is so cool. I remember in high school my brother let me help put up posters, hand out buttons and flyers to promote one of her GIAC shows. One of the best shows I've been to.
It looks like the bassist showed up to the wrong band practice and has since felt too uncomfortable to leave.
Ahahahahahahh
👹
amazing.
HAHAHAHAHAH!
Great observation Stewart.
the mixing from npr is just so good
She have a beautiful voice & I love the music too is wonderful!!! Congrats!!!! Why she is not famous??
Representin' S.A.! Love this girl!
Yessss I love her crazy eyes when she performs.
Gorgeouse performance! Also, I absolutely love how they all have their nails painted (except for the drummer C: ) ♡♡♡
now her husband :)
Nina Diaz has such a strong voice. I've seen Girl in a Coma a few times. They were so nice and chill in person. Hopefully I can see her solo act soon
Her voice is so strong and evocative.
This was great! I can't wait for the new album. Well played!
Ahh. I love her and her voice. Girl In A Coma, one of the best bands I listened to in one of the worst stretches of my life.
Me gustaron mucho estas canciones. ¡Gracias!
Nina flows in 2021 and forever! Keep it rollin.
New to her music and she’s a fellow San Antonian! 👍👍 She’s got a great voice, wow!
I've been following her since time ago... love her powerful voice and her face expressions. ..
It's honestly a pretty spacious desk
Best voice that always delivers. ❤
Her voice is so amazing
Wow amazing music, love the whole arraignment and sound....awesome !!!!!!!
Came across this after listening to Big Thief blown me away every song different shes unbelievable live can’t stop listening to this every weekend ❤
She is really great !
Amazing voice as always.
Glad i let this one play. 🔥
Nina is just amazing and I feel since being clean. That her lyrics or better yet her music are much better then ever. I saw her at The Studio of Webster Hall and she was amazing and after the show the sweetest person I ever met.
Oh my goodness. Her Voice is worth a million bucks. I keep thinking of famous voices to compare her to and I keep coming up with her name sake.
N. Simone
Kind of sounds like Alanis Morissette and Fiona Apple put together
theres a little lady gaga and amy winehouse
Thought I try and educate you a little being that music is something you are still not familiar with!
Nina was preforming long before Gaga & Amy. Amy saw Girl In A Coma supporting Morrissey, immediately changing her image afterwards by covering her arms in tattoos, then a few months later adding the beehive hair style.
+Dave Rave - I thought I should educate you a little being that English is something you are still not familiar with!
The info you generously bestowed is celebrity trivia, not music. It's not even sound, which is what was being described :-/
Cory Y. Lil Natalie Merchant, too
Where did you hear that? Sounds like a rumor.
Featuring Emo Jesse Pinkman on bass.
Dig...such an 80's goth feel. Fantastic!! I would love to know the names of the great musicians she's playing with.
a 7 string bass and a melodica together. ok
Her voice is like a soulful Alanis Morrisette
dude I'm in love
My high school music teacher showed us this clip in class. He has good taste in music. The 7-stringed bass is very unusual though, but overall these songs, especially "Dig" sound great.
Amazing voice.
She is so amazing
"For You" I'd buy this album, owwhha. Okay maybe not on CD, but for you, I'd buy this album. The album will "Dig, and dig", its way into to your heart, until you find that its "January 9th" once again.
she is fantastic
Love Nina! Have just about every GIAC album. Glad to to see her branching out.
Just about? There are only 4, if you count the cover album :P
She is rather excellent
this is incredible
Amazing that voice just pulls you in
Bravo Nina.
Sincerely,
Roy Strait Allen
what a beauty!
i love this so much
Wow, her voice is powerful.
impressive songwriting . great melodies and out of nowhere chord changes
Man you are a beautiful singer..
They kill this set. Hella performance
I want to learn these songs on the melodica I have... don't know where to start!!! Love Nina so much!
You're awesome nina.
...and the way she rolls her eyes...
wake up every day paint my nails grab 20 string bass for acoustic practice...
Great stuff. Also funny to see Aaron Paul on the bass.
Markus Hirvola hahaha
Nina mí amor
I love deeply.

Gorgeous
Love this!!!!
Love it.
My mans playing a 7 string bass to a whats basically an pop/punk gig, thats a wild man
Second number reminds me of Diablo I
The bassist looks like if Jesse Pinkman went punk.
When brushes aren't quiet enough, dampen with your pocket phone.
Maravilha!!!
I love it
It's like an acoustic Portishead
totally disagree....
Nina's making a solo record! www.pledgemusic.com/projects/ninadiaz
great
good good good
I'm not dissing it, but are the 6 strings entirely necessary? (insert dodgeball reference reply below)
I count 7
7 then
Are 4 strings entirely necessary? Are 88 keys really necessary? Musicians choose the instrument that allows them to play the music they want to play. It isn't about necessary.
just seemed like he didn't utilize it at any point and for travel purposes it would be a lot more practical to use a smaller bass.
Yeah I mean this guy is playing literally two notes for like the whole song
how did she monitor her own voice? or was it all acoustic?
Yoo, the bassist is repping Periphery. Some good shit.
Who is this girl playing melodica, i felt in love.
Cool
The slide guitar on the second number is awesome! Subtle, in perfect counterpoint to her forceful vocals.
I want her Sonic Youth tshirt
Apart from the Gibson acoustic guitars, lovely.
are they not good ?
Etienne Miemczyk I'm sure they're good in the sense that many people like them.
I personally don't like them. Not only in this instance but in general they sound thin and almost "synthy" to me.
You must be fun at parties
What, having an opinion about the sound of a guitar makes somebody a bore?
That's the pickups not the guitars
It would've been cool if she did at least one song in memory of Girl in a coma.
Does anyone know the strumming pattern to "for you"? Many thx.
Dig 4:00
Amazing artist, like the stream of thought style lyrics and groovy musicals, that second song had me singing STP's "big empty" all day, for some reason the chord progression and slide guitar just trigger that for me.
Cant believe this is the diaz brothers little sister lol
that's Bowser's bass riff on that second song. damn
Did anyone have the chords of the last song?
When I saw this I thought GIAC had broken up I was like noooo
They did.
Holy shit, she's ah-maze-zing
