I've ordered mine (technically my boss did as a company car for me) after a 10 min test drive. Drove a 156hp E208 before this, but it has been at the dealer's for 7 months now waiting for them to get it fixed. Did some short sprints and it felt quick enough, as it should because the E208 also was quick enough. Even the slower E208 with a 136hp is fine, just misses power at highway speeds. But the biggest difference for me was the interior compared to the E208. If you are in the rear seats of the E208 you have a little bit more space, but apart from that the R5 is better in every aspect. Better materials, physical buttons and the entertainment system is much better (in the E208 you have to use Android Auto or Apple Carplay if you want something that feels good). And don't forget the top of the line R5 is like €5000 less than the top of the line E208.
Thanks for the comment, very similar to my situation. I’ve had an e208 company car for a bit over 2 years - nice car when it works! 12V battery issues, random charging issues, not starting, amongst others. I’m just waiting until I’m allowed to order a Renault 5, probably in about 3 months. Don’t need a big EV and this just looks sensational.
Why Hyundai Inster is not mentioned for a comparison, personally that is my dilemma, R5 has a bigger battery while Inster has better efficiency so real world test would be probably deciding factor since range is 90% of decision for me.
Yes. Both have small batteries so I'd expect both to be tuned for efficiency. Then I learned Cx of R5 to be 0.29 (e-SUVs can be down to 0.26 and TM3 has 0.23) so the range is likely to dip on motorway?
At Everything Electric, I sat in the Renault 5 and the Hyundai Inster. The 5 needs a sliding rear seat like the Inster. There's far too little leg room.
Excellent review ! Thanks ! Congrats Renault for designing, manufacturing and selling this REALLY désirable car ! Definitely an EV car for Thomas Crown / Steve McQueen 👍
Looks forward to it coming to Australia but it might take awhile if it is too popular in Europe, it also tends to get a price bump. I expect it to be competing with the larger MG4/BYD Dolphin/Ora Cat on price. Aunt is looking for a small car, so its between this and the Hyundai Inster, doesn't look like BYD is bringing thier small car to Australia since we have a car culture that is between the UK and the USA as far as car sizes go.
The more you look into Renault, the more you come to the conclusion that they are the European manufacturer to beat re EV. I'd own a Megane or Scenic over any other EV right now.
@@snaggiz But if you think about it, it hasn't come about by chance. They stepped into the EV game really intentionally with the Zoe, which they then had the commitment to iterate on for a couple of mid life updates, and then have made a real commitment, unlike Stellantis, to EV cars, designing them around a bespoke architecture. They were one of the first manufacturer to champion cheaper LiFePO batteries and really the only EU manufacturer that are able to compete with the Chinese competitors. With a stronger EU industrial strategy that actually addresses the insane about of state support Chinese EV manufacturers get, they have every chance to compete globally. And, dammit, they're European ... I'd much rather put my money into European jobs than American or Chinese.
The car is kind of big on the outside, small on the inside. Cost a lot more than a MG4 here in northern Europe. I do not see anything good about this car, except that it looks cool.
what are you comparing? Just size? Rhe MG4 is not cool to look at. Has a cheap and very plastic interior. Is riddled with quality control issues. (see customer reviews) and has awful seats
This car looks fantastic in the metal. Having seen this and then the new “capri” at everything electric the first thought in the back of my mind was that Ford are loosing it. I really fancy a new 5 when the lease runs out on my current EV in 18 months. Just need to convince the Mrs that it’s big enough 🤞
If I could afford it, I’d have one but it’s huge in comparison to the original 5. I’m not sold on the headlight design or the daylight running lights design too but I’d have one 🏴
checked the trims on the renault site in the uk and some things are weird tbf. a few of the basic tech features are hidden behind higher trim models. for the heated steering wheel and seats you also need to get the iconic model. imho these things should come by default in evs, otherwise they’re nickel-and-diming their own customers.
14:08 I've never understood the logic of putting cable storage underneath the luggage space. It's the least convenient place for it if you're on a journey and carrying luggage. Cables should be stored on top, or better still, in a small space under the bonnet, if the recharging port is near the front of the car..
I did not watch review (was in silent mode), but the looks of this car is stunning. if in some years to come I'll consider a small car, I'll surely look back at this nipper.
I’ve not wanted a car as much as I have this one for a long time. I can’t wait to get one on my drive, and a home charger installed, as it will be my first EV.
I'm sorry Bryan, but although you've done another excellent review, your 'Thomas Crown Affair ' analogy doesn't work for me, the original is far superior, Steve 'The king of Cool' McQueen versus Pierce Brosnan is absolutely no contest.
Hmmm, I was never convinced McQueen was Thomas Crown. He was too much of a tough guy persona to carry it off in my book. Frank Bulitt, undoubtedly, Michael Delaney, yup, can see that. But not Thomas Crown. But hey, I never thought Connery was the best Bond, so what do I know?😆😆 But thanks as always for watching! Appreciate your support.
Renault has been steadily picking up wins and this looks like another one. Relatively affordable, reasonably technologically specced and it’s got tons of attitude in a compact package. I’m not in the market for a car, but if I were and I just wanted a daily driver and something for shorter trips, this would be on my shortlist. This looks like a fantastic little car.
It is nice to see a hatchback styled car instead of endless SUVs and crossovers. It seems to be very good for what it is but wouldn't suit me because it is a bit too small with limited range. Also it uses NMC battery chemistry which is a no no for me, because of degradation and its combustibility, I prefer LFP.
Fantastic review, recently subbed I love your channel. Entertaining and informative. I love the R5. But it's not the EV for me, as a quinqugenarian I have a BYD Dolphin on order to replace my eight years of Zoe ownership, in part, thanks to your review. I do however wish the R5 every success in the UK, it looks amazing!
Thanks for the review; it's appreciated. A few minor cons, and one major con, for me: # There are no rear passenger USB ports. I use them quite often, as a Zoë driver, because accessory cables are out of the way. # From what you say, there are no storage spaces in the rear door cards. I keep the handbooks out of the way in one of those, so that's a nuisance. # It only has 11kW 3-phase AC recharging. Renault have chipped away at that over the years, from 43kW, then down to 22kW for the Zoë. That latter is ideal for many people. 11kWAC is just painfully slow, and it forces drivers to use DC recharging if they have to use public facilities. 100kW is not ideal for the relatively small battery. # Whatever happened to the iconic Cerulean Blue? That option is great, and my wife's favourite colour. # Still no front storage space for the recharging cables. Why bury them under the luggage in the rear? # Renault still don't display the recharging power on the dash or in the app. Most frustrating if you're wanting to check that a recharging dispenser is working properly, quickly. Many dispensers still don't show power delivery speeds in kW, so the car really needs to do that. # The price is still too high, especially now that UK subsidies are being withdrawn, and VED is being imposed on BEV's at the full UK rate. High prices also bump up insurance premiums. Pros include: # It captures the 5 ethos nicely. # It looks very good. # It's obviously a joy to drive. # It's reasonably efficient. The Zoë has similar capabilities, and I find that the claimed range is really easy to exceed for most of the year. It can top 300 miles in midsummer, with sensible (not hypermiling) driving, from my experience. # The front storage space is much improved, compared to the Zoë. # Renault have addressed the ride comfort niggles when on rough roads. # Wind noise has been reduced significantly. Desirable? In many ways, yes. But there is still room for improvement.
Stellantis seem to have got their act together and are competing finally. Maybe a little small for what we were looking for. Any idea when they will actually be here in the UK ?
Great car. 100 charge is normal when you have a smaller battery. And it's affordable! Does it have the 22kw AC charging ability like the Zoë? Because germany is full of those chargers and they are great if you visit a place for a short time + you get a cheaper charge.
Toyota bZ4X’s regenerative braking system captures braking energy, converting it into power for extended range. This innovation minimizes energy loss, reduces brake wear, and ensures an eco-friendly driving experience tailored to the modern electric vehicle enthusiast.
The R4, sharing the same battery and motor, may well be a better ptoposition : more space in the back, much bigger trunk with a lower sill and only 22 cm longer. Of course it will be less sexy looking... (plus Epedal that will come to the R5 lmater).
I think it’s far superior to the BMW Mini, which as far as I’m concerned isn’t a Mini. It’s far too big. The R5 is much truer to its predecessors idea. I’d love one, but for the techno (- agree this is the best fit & in dark blue with red stripe) just don’t have the £ at the moment. But, come the time…
The R5 is nice little car but the top of the range has the yellow interior which is only OK if you pick yellow paint but any other colours it doesn't suit so will have to go with the blue denim material 😉 but then can't spec it with heated seats and steering wheel 😉
@@AutoEV Good to hear that Renault haven't gone down that road. it's really weird that VW are still releasing new cars like the ID7 with those haptic shite buttons even after admitting that they screwed up with them and saying they'd be done from the ID2. Maybe I'm showing my ignorance here, but I tend to associate longer journeys with boots full of luggage. Are you saying you'd have to get those bags out in order to access the charging cable?
Yes, but if you are using public chargers then most rapid chargers tend to be tethered, in other words they have cables attached to them. And lots of EVs store their cables under the boot floor, so no real difference to them.
@@AutoEV thanks for answering, I hadn't twigged that you wont need these cables for rapid charging. But charging is going to be a frequent thing, much more frequent than dealing with a puncture. So it doesn't make sense to me to have the charging cables go somewhere hard to access when the boot is full. If lots of EVs have this problem maybe I'm missing something, or maybe those who store the charging cables in a more accessible location have an advantage.
If a car has a storage area under the front bonnet (some reviews call it a frunk) then that’s handy. I store the ones for my Genesis under the bonnet as I use them on a slow public charger when I visit my mum, but it’s the only time I ever use the cable. Otherwise it’s a tethered one I have at home, and the majority of fast public chargers I use in the trip are tethered. But yes, it’s easier if they can be stored elsewhere.
Always with the Ai chat. If it monitors live road reports and weather in the back ground and just naturally came on and said - heavy traffic ahead, accident reported ahead etc. when it gets to me asking “ Whats that castle called to me left” and it gives me a wee bit about it - great. We have had five MINI’s, two currently on the drive both ordered factory new to our spec U.K. My Car has been kept because it’s on low miles and drives like new still and is now ten years old. To me MINI styling wise it looks a bit of a knock-off copy and just not as sharp. Renault have also said this platform and car will not go through cycles of say three years before it’s updated they have said it will updated yearly - what that means who knows. I have never considered a Renault although way back a friend of a friend had the Turbo GT and even the Turbo 2 imported back in the day. I always have had a soft spot for them and this looks fantastic. The MINI SE to me needs the sports pack to make it look nice so it comes in at £35-43k and too me that’s crazy. But this R5 hits the mark bit the 0-62 to me just needed to come in a 7 seconds.
the biggest threat to the r5 is its price. you can get much better evs with 20-50k kms for 20-25k euros. love the channel btw. the reviews are excellent.
Tbh a EV with all that central part.is a no go for me, i like space and ones that have a gap there instead of that tunnel section like a petrol car has I like to relax my left leg when driving since you dont really use it when driving a ev The interior just does not do it for me at all tbh. Outside for me the car only looks good in this green which i bet is a costly upgrade since most youtubers have been reviewing the green version. Price wise...well its not really cheap. And lease price is a ripoff. With a realistic 10k miles a year allowence and 1 month upfront on a 24 month contract its like 360 a month lol should be 280 max
Yeah agree, centre part of the dashboard is a total turn off for me too. When test driving the polestar 2 a year or two back that was it's biggest fault, the store rep guy said it was the number one thing potential customers mention after test drives.
The pricing structure will hold sales back. Despite the appeal. Typical Renault these days. Dangle low prices in front and than you add the things you needs better OBC, better CCS. Can't say under 30K is well done. Really can't.
Not sure they will really, and also lease wise its price with 10k miles a year allowence is a total ripoff. This should cost no more than 280 a month on lease
@@marklola12They're a desirable unreleased car. The decent lease deals will come, give it 6 months I reckon. I agree the current lease or PCP prices are a bit high, but get the basic one down close to £200pm, and a well specced larger battery one for under £300pm and you won't find anything as desirable at the price.
The new 5 is indeed cool and will sell well...what's not so good is this abomination called WLTP, how could it be serious with a name like Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure?... There needs to be a range calibration far more transparent than this gobbledegook! 1/ expected range in warm conditions 2/ expected range in cold conditions 3/ expected range at constant 100 kph 4/ expected range with stop start city use 5/ expected degradation after 5 years. The way things stand ATM makes VW Dieselgate look like Mother Teresa!.
You don’t get anything like that with ICE car range estimates and they vary by conditions too. You’re right about WLTP though, it’s nonsense, but manufacturers are following an agreed standard, so they will not be liable like Dieselgate.
@@ISuperTed A more equitable rating system would be a guaranteed minimum rather than an unattainable maximum...but I guess cynically that wouldn't help sell cars would it.😂🙂
@@Luke-PlanesTrainsDogsnCars Trouble is there is no guaranteed minimum for any car. If I drive at 99mph in the freezing cold in my EV I would probably get half the quoted range, but it’s not realistic. Same for petrol cars. I just use EV database for real figures- they are pretty good.

What they’ve done is use the Capri badge in a 5 door fastback style crossover. And I have to agree with you. Absolutely silly idea. They’d have been better calling it the new Mondeo/Sierra/Cortina. Too many memories attached to the Capri badge for it not to be a coupe.

Actually I don’t. His viewpoint is his, mine is different. But I don’t call him “full of crap” because it’s not the same as mine. It’s called being polite.
It does offer better tech and engineering than the Stellantis ones did, while being substantially cheaper too than those were (probably now they'll come down to price parity). The e208 had style in and out, but it was way overpriced and it had flaws. What Renault has done with this car will make a difference. Sales will say how much, but probably quite a big one.
Really hasn’t moved on much from the Zoe. Power up slightly and price fairly similar considering the fact they made a big deal about being the next gen of cheaper ev’s. If you’re not bothered about the latest infotainment, better to get a super cheap Zoe.
Still overpriced when compared to a similar gas car. I am sorry but if it take 10 years to balance the upcost of ev compared to the price of a gas car then it is not worth all the problem and limitation. They need to bring prices way down.

Great review Brian.
I think this is the best small car out there.
Renault are smashing it at the moment
Totally agree
Why Hyundai Inster is not mentioned for a comparison, personally that is my dilemma, R5 has a bigger battery while Inster has better efficiency so real world test would be probably deciding factor since range is 90% of decision for me.
Yes. Both have small batteries so I'd expect both to be tuned for efficiency. Then I learned Cx of R5 to be 0.29 (e-SUVs can be down to 0.26 and TM3 has 0.23) so the range is likely to dip on motorway?
What about the Inster?
01:18 Spot on! Passed my test in an S registered Renault 5 TL. 😉
What an amazing little car. Renault truly nailed it & desrve the success they will get.
Very through review & I'm guessing you like it too !!!!!
What makes you say that......? Yes, an amazing little car.
Great review Bryan 👍
Thanks 👍
Enhorabuena por la revisión.
Saludos 👋🏎️⚡
At Everything Electric, I sat in the Renault 5 and the Hyundai Inster. The 5 needs a sliding rear seat like the Inster. There's far too little leg room.
Brilliant video for a brilliant car, thank you so much. I am going to order one of those, it is just not available in my country yet.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
I would love to see a French Racing Blue one.
That turning circle is a full metre bigger than the skoda enyaq, that's bonkers 😱
The more you look into Renault, the more you come to the conclusion that they are the European manufacturer to beat re EV. I'd own a Megane or Scenic over any other EV right now.
I’m driving my Scenic e tech for two months now and I’m very happy with it.
Honestly, Renault is really progressing very well with their newer offerings.
Red Five standing by 🙂 great review 🙂
This is a homerun design-wise, I wouldn't replace that with an updated Zoe or even Clio. Well done Renault!
The style and price has to be a massive winner! Far far better than the new Mini and better than many Stellantis models.
The car is kind of big on the outside, small on the inside. Cost a lot more than a MG4 here in northern Europe. I do not see anything good about this car, except that it looks cool.
Errrrr.... myself I don't think any aspect of an MG would compare in any way with this car. Sorry..
what are you comparing?
Game changing for Renault. Great review. Do the wing mirrors auto fold and can you turn the air con or heat on remotely within the app? Cheers.
If I could afford it, I’d have one but it’s huge in comparison to the original 5.
I’m not sold on the headlight design or the daylight running lights design too but I’d have one 🏴
@@macjim you have to see it and sit in it in real life. I never ever considered Renault until I drove the R5. The quality is outstanding.
I notice the sensor at the back of the rear wheel is recessed. Perhaps that will help keep it clean...un obstructed?
New glasses! Looking good😎
Thanks! 😁
Alfie - reboot didn't work, but maybe this car will. Love that green too..
checked the trims on the renault site in the uk and some things are weird tbf. a few of the basic tech features are hidden behind higher trim models. for the heated steering wheel and seats you also need to get the iconic model. imho these things should come by default in evs, otherwise they’re nickel-and-diming their own customers.
No way should have Renault just built a newer Clio. The retro 5 is the design stroke of genius.
I’ve not wanted a car as much as I have this one for a long time. I can’t wait to get one on my drive, and a home charger installed, as it will be my first EV.
Great choice as your first EV!
But hey, I never thought Connery was the best Bond, so what do I know?😆😆
But thanks as always for watching! Appreciate your support.
@@AutoEV Spot on re. Thomas Crown. Great film and spot on performance by Brosnan. Anyway, the car....
This is what the Honda e could and should have been if they got the price and battery right. I think Renault have nailed it!
the amount of sales of this in 25 will become a big story ... especially in europe this is what we have been waiting for
With that range and price dont think so
@@FritsvrolijkI suppose you expect it to be £15k and have a range of 600 miles? Get real, how much is a basic polluting petrol car!
The cost is brilliant 🤩
Fantastic review, recently subbed I love your channel. Entertaining and informative. I love the R5. But it's not the EV for me, as a quinqugenarian I have a BYD Dolphin on order to replace my eight years of Zoe ownership, in part, thanks to your review. I do however wish the R5 every success in the UK, it looks amazing!
Super iconic nod to the original. Sadly Ford just used the name Capri on a competition by the work experience kids
I predict the R5 will outsell the Mini. I hate that indicator sound though.
It's a lovely wee car. I want!!
Thanks for the review; it's appreciated.
A few minor cons, and one major con, for me:
# There are no rear passenger USB ports.
Pros include:
# It captures the 5 ethos nicely.
Bring it out in Australia
Haha...Barely a chance of that. Unfortunately Renault don't represent themselves in Australia, and rely on a quite perfectly inept importer...
Is it like the original rally car?
Where is the charge door?
Stellantis seem to have got their act together and are competing finally. Maybe a little small for what we were looking for. Any idea when they will actually be here in the UK ?
This isn't stellantis. But they can be ordered in Jan, delivery in April 😊
i think these will sell bucket loads. when we replace our zoe 2nd car we are buying one of these
Yes, the R4 will no doubt be the practical one, the R5 being the stylish one. But it does give us hope that the R4 will be a decent drive.
But, come the time…
One important thing not mentioned: going EV reduces poisoning the planet and ourselves.
Come to Australia, and not many will agree with you on that one. Electric cars are pretty well despised.
@@PeroniPetewhat is the reasoning behind it?
@@PeroniPete Yet Model Y was best selling private purchase!
You never mentioned the upcoming VW ID2
Yes Vw ID2 looks great I'm pics and demo concept car in the Blue colour looks like a modern polo Ev
The R5 is nice little car but the top of the range has the yellow interior which is only OK if you pick yellow paint but any other colours it doesn't suit so will have to go with the blue denim material 😉 but then can't spec it with heated seats and steering wheel 😉
@@patpong5873I had the same thought. Want the range topper, but couldn’t live with the yellow!
All cars are required to have reverse cameras in the USA since 2018, not that the R5 or any Renault is coming here.
Are the steering wheel inner buttons physical buttons or those stupid haptic buttons?
Physical buttons.
@@AutoEV Good to hear that Renault haven't gone down that road.
it's really weird that VW are still releasing new cars like the ID7 with those haptic shite buttons even after admitting that they screwed up with them and saying they'd be done from the ID2. They've actually removed them from the new ID3s and Golf MK8.5 but are still on the ID7 which was released after
It’s a restyled Zoe, right?
No, it’s not.
Ooooh touching some personal stories in the intro eh?
Great little car which is definitely on my radar as a runaround...but no reversing camera? Thanks for your review
@@peterburt2905 it's only the basic trim that doesn't get a camera according to Renault's website. Techno and Iconic both come with a camera
Yes, my error. Techno does have a reversing camera.
On the higher trim level there is.
It did say 360 camera on the screen .... so maybe ? It does say reversing camera on the top 2 specs
Tbh a EV with all that central part.is a no go for me, i like space and ones that have a gap there instead of that tunnel section like a petrol car has
I like to relax my left leg when driving since you dont really use it when driving a ev
The interior just does not do it for me at all tbh.
The POP green shade is standard. Black roof is an option, priced at £400
My brothers stepdaughter had a Zoe she now has a VW beetle
Starting at £23000 - no way, I’ll believe that when I see it.
Erm……that’s the starting price. It’s on sale now for that price. I’m not fibbing or making it up.
@ I stand corrected.
The pricing structure will hold sales back. Despite the appeal.
Typical Renault these days. Dangle low prices in front and than you add the things you needs better OBC, better CCS. Can't say under 30K is well done. Really can't.
They're going to sell boat loads of these
Not sure they will really, and also lease wise its price with 10k miles a year allowence is a total ripoff.

Um, your intro sounds very much like what Ford have done with the Capri, talk about an own goal, such a stupid move🙄
Well in some respects Ford haven’t “rebooted” the Capri as it’s not the old car brought back, ie. it’s not a sporting coupe. What they’ve done is use the Capri badge in a 5 door fastback style crossover. And I have to agree with you. Absolutely silly idea. They’d have been better calling it the new Mondeo/Sierra/Cortina. It does offer better tech and engineering than the Stellantis ones did, while being substantially cheaper too than those were (probably now they'll come down to price parity). The e208 had style in and out, but it was way overpriced and it had flaws.
