Canon PowerShot Pro1 in 2021 - The cheapest L-glass you can get

  • In the early days of digital cameras manufacturers took a much more bold design approach. DSLRs mostly still looked like in the days of analogue photography but when it came to compact cameras all bets were off. This was also the case with the Canon PoweShot Pro1 in 2004. But not only the design was adventurous. Canon built the first and still the only compact camera with an officially branded L-Lens. How "pro" was it? Can you still get some fun out of it today? I'll try to answer these and more questions in this video.

    As a Canon user, I also collect Canon cameras (digital/film), I'd never heard of or seen this model before, and yes I'm about to buy one. Having an L series lens and 8 Meg sensor, and CF card storage is perfect, because it slows you down, your example pics looked pretty darned good to me. Design wise, it's not that ugly, and I'm looking forward to receiving and using this beauty.

      Image quality at 50 iSO is stunning. As long as you have enough light. Skin tones and colors are very life like.

    I remember back in the day, this was a very impressive digital camera. I was working with a Nikon D1 (2.7mp, max usable iso 1000, and a battery that lasted half a football game...and cost new about the same value as my 3 yr old Ford Fiesta) and a colleague had a Pro1. It really felt like a mini 'pro' camera, and I was rather envious..!

    Glad to see more people talking about this thing! I still love mine to take out on occasion. And I made reference to its ugliness in my video too hahah. Great video!

    Thank you for this great video, and for being to the point. There are many videos out there that are 20 30-40 minutes. It only really give you a small snippet of what should be the equivalent of what your video is. Great value information, straight to the point. Not too long. Not too short. Just right. In my opinion, you weren't a sub today

    Update, 16.7.2021. Have had my Pro 1 for a few days now. Bought in mint condition, including batteries, with Canon charger, plus Canon remote shutter release and Canon lens hood. Not mentioned in your video is the filter ring attachment, a novel idea, this one has a UV filter fitted. Anyway, the Pro 1 is no light weight due to the L series zoom lens. Taken a few shots, believe me they look amazing, you must buy one, buying a mint one won't be easy though, good hunting....

    I've had my mint condition Canon Pro1 now for a while, and to be honest I love using it, I'm a landscape (mainly) and macro photographer. The results I get from the Pro 1 just take my breath away. Once you get used to the quirkiness of this one of a kind Canon camera, blessed with an L series lens, you too will get attached to it. If you can find one that is, prices are climbing up, but to be honest, what ever the cost, it's worth it.

    I still have Konica Minolta Dimage A2, which has the same 8mpix 2/3" sensor and 28-200 mm eq. lens, with f/3.5 at the tele end. This kind of premium bridge camera with long zoom lens was quite popular back then.
    Too bad the batteries for my Minolta hold up to around 2 minutes of shoot...

    I had a canon A1 film camera for many years, and when looking at the lens options the L series were eye wateringly expensive and usually only bought by professionals. When I started looking for a decent digital camera for my sailing trip to the Med I stumbled across this and wow! it had that L series lens, so a snapped it up. Years later and after hundreds of pictures it works like new and that lens has proved itself against more modern competition. The colours and definition exceed anything I have used before. The meagre 8 megapixels is no hindrance. I view the pictures on my 32 inch TV and the quality is spectacular. The functions give an unlimited amount of control and the flip screen is invaluable. But oh how I hate that electronic viewfinder!!

    Very cool video! Just picked up one of these myself and I've thus far been impressed. The lens on my copy is surprisingly sharp--significantly more sharp than a few other Canons I use regularly and really enjoy, including the PowerShot G2, G11 and S40. I have a feeling that the Pro 1 might replace a couple of these...
    Also, I tried to drop you an email to invite you to collaborate on a photo challenge with me and a few other RUclipsrs who also review small sensor/CCD cams, but the message got kicked back. Let me know if you'd like to hear about it. Cheers!

    I think no other Canon compact before or after had an L lens. By the way I shot a lot with both L and non-L glass on EOS bodies and the distinguishing feature was not only the sharpness but more importantly (for me) the colours from the L lens *far* exceeded the consumer (non-L) lens. So I expect the colours from this lens to be exceptional and way beyond a normal compact of that period. In the old days i was so used to shooting at ISO 100 on the EOS-1D MKI, and focusing on vertical lines for focus lock that everything after is a pure luxury!!!!

    • @quirkycams4965
      @quirkycams4965  3 года назад +2

      sometimes there pops one up on ebay but prices are rather too high for a single replacement cap. Maybe it would even be cheaper to get a used or defective Pro1 just for the cap alone ;)
