  • In this video, we do a quick reflection and comparison between my experiences with my current BMW F30 340i and my old 2010 Audi B8 S4. I wanted to make this video just to talk about the pros and cons of each, what I liked about each, which one I prefer, etc. Hope you all enjoy!

2013 S4 tuned up with 93 and a TCU tune. Roc Euro intake, KW Variant Coils and 19x9.5” M590 square setup on Firehawk Indy 500. It was a great car, and held up great for me over three hard years. I drove the snot out of my cars but make sure I do the maintenance regularly. S4 held up well, but the DSG was in decline at 96k even though I tuned the TCU at the same time as the ECU and also did the DSG service on schedule at 40k. Otherwise the motor itself had only minor issues (a radiator coolant leak which was pinhole and patchable, an oil pressure switch and an exhaust leak). The startup rattle and needle bearings in the charger were also loud but “within spec”. Overall a great daily ripper that was nearly invincible in the 0-60 game.
Just traded for a 2018 340i MPPSK though and yeah there isn’t a competition. The s4 has the better seats imo, and the charger whine is a drug. However when equipped with the MPPSK the b58 has an exotic sounding exhaust that’s just as addicting as the charger whine. Being RWD it is slower to 60, but almost everything else is superior in the F30. The s4 had a better sport seat and wet traction (obviously I could’ve gotten X-Drive but I opted to drop a second to 60 for the payoff in the twisties and roll racing).
My s4 also had the sports diff and the F30 needs an aftermarket installation for LSD. However the Diff spent ALL of it’s life just trying to cancel out the bad handling nature the s4 has inherently. The s4 also has more aggressive wheel arches over the A4 to indicate it’s a performance variant, the 340i would use some of that since it looks the same as a 30i, 28i, ect.
The rest is all f30, without question. The brakes are superior with multi-piston all around, 4 per front wheel! The s4 had a crappy floating caliper single piston. The 340i has Brembos on all trims. The suspension tuning and weight distribution of the f30 is massively better also. Pretty close to 50/50 and it’s about 200lbs lighter and physically a bit smaller (yet has more leg room for my children) footprint wise. RWD even with the open diff means you aren’t wrestling to bring the back around on turns, it comes around based on throttle input. The S4 would under steer like crazy and plow until the diff kicked in and then you’d get a hair of oversteer. The f30 just builds a touch of understeer progressively and then you can use throttle input to return to your intended line. Excellent chassis relative to the s4. The s4 was fast (I frequently ran door to door with modern muscle cars) but the F30 has a better starting point and can be tuned much higher, cheaper. Over all I would say the Audi was more luxury car with sports elements and the 340i is a sports car first with some luxury trapping. The drivetrain of B58 and ZF8 is a gem and that’s prior to any tuning. The torque curve is gargantuan and flat, and the ZF keeps you in the meat instinctively. The exhaust note gives me shivers. I can’t wait to get an intake and hear some more front side noise!
This video nailed all the points. Good work!

you kinda messed up cause xdrive is great from a roll, in winter, drifting, and also you can get a $500 box that can switch from awd to rwd

      @@roycelinstromberg2396 No, I didn’t. You’re massively over simplifying things.
The X-Drive car has a variety of different suspension components, and the weight of the system itself is present. If you use X-Delete it lets you drift around like a RWD but that does not make it handle like the RWD car. The X-Drive doesn’t have the same 50-50 balance and RWD and that doesn’t change when you use software. That balance has an extremely noticeable difference in how the car feels and responds near the edge. The control arms and bushings are stiffer, stock ride height lower on the RWD. The spring rates are different on RWD. On X-Drive the front wheels still have axels attached to them that mechanically spin, even if they’re not actually being driven. That makes the steering heavy and even more numb (and the f30 doesn’t need its steering numbed up any more). The RWD will always have an inherent weight advantage, over 100lbs of one in fact. That’s felt not only in curves, but also in roll racing (my primary use of the car). X-drive is like having a smaller passenger riding around with you all day. The axles and a few of the other components in the drive train are less beefy in the AWD due to the expectation that when being abused the power is being distributed across four locations rather than two. If you force it to use just two, you’re stressing those components significantly more… ESPECIALLY when tuned say Stage 2+ (I will be as soon as I get my MHD DME unlocking tool that’s in the mail right now). Which brings up two more points. Maintenance and ease of access/repair. RWD cars are infinitely easier to work on (I work on all my cars at home) than AWD. If I need to pull the motor or transmission ever or even access a variety of comments, it’s as simple as elevating the car a bit and you have access. The transmission can be dropped super easily. On X-Drive you’re talking about pulling the subframe off and dropping suspension as well. X-Drive also has a higher likelihood of mechanical failure due to increased complexity and a higher component count. The X-Drive will best a RWD without drag pack (it’s actually pretty damn close with) through the quarter mile for sure. After that though stock for stock or mod for mod the RWD cars are posting higher traps, faster 60-130 times, better braking times, ect. Because of the weight and drive loss penalty. Luckily my day isn’t spent on a strip.
These things all played into my decision making, and I’m happy to report that I very much made the right call.
As Kies noted when they tested X-Delete, the module cannot completely shut off all power, there is residual power being delivered to the front axles, so it’s a facsimile of RWD but can’t replicate the actuality of true RWD. It’s only good for really making your car do donuts easier and then better switched back off so as not to massively increase wear on the weaker X-drive components.
If your argument is that “A” can be made to behave like “B” and therefore “B” is better then you are ignoring the ideal you are chasing. The ONLY advantage X-Drive has is dig/inclement weather performance, every other column is a win for RWD. Well I don’t drag from a light frequently (if at all) and my wife has a Rav4 AWD and frequently works from home… so if it’s so bad that I’m parking my car for the two big storms we get in Buffalo a year, then she is staying safe at home and I’m taking the Rav. Otherwise Blizzack Snow and Ice do just fine other other 99.8% of the winter drives. What works for one person and may be best isn’t always for every one. At the end of the day I prefer what I chose, and I’m happy with it. If you have X-Drive that’s a great car too, nothing wrong with it. Cheese pizza or Cheese & Pepperoni are both still delicious to eat!

Thanks bro, I love the Audi but I've been leaning towards the BMW, especially with the manual transmission!

Hey bro. I’m looking at getting either of these cars, witch was cheaper on maintenance for parts and all that and witch was cheaper for insurance!

Hey! I would say that the S4 was cheaper for parts but the BMW is more expensive for maintenance. I had the S4 for longer which meant I spent more on it overall, but both were very reliable.
