2018 BMW 340i: How Was 3 Years Of Ownership?!

  • This week I say goodbye to my 2018 BMW 340i ZHP... after 36 months with it, I'm equally qualified to discuss its strengths and weaknesses, as well as I am sad and will miss this Bimmer!
    There's nothing I'll miss more than the sweet sound that this MPPSK equipped F30 produced, but there's also an appealing balance between modern and contemporary that this 3 Series strikes both inside and out. With LED headlights and taillights, it has a modern light signature, but with minimal screen usage on the inside, it feels a bit more timeless than your latest gen BMW's.
    Overall, if I had to do it all over again, I would still absolutely pick this 18' 340i over say a Mercedes AMG C43 or an Audi S4, and thus, I will have fond memories of my three years with this machine!

    You touched on everything I wanted to ask you. Just rolled / totaled my 2011 e92 335i with 30k miles that I picked up last year. Been researching and 340i was the direction I was thinking after watching your other video. Out shopping & freaked by the prices since just last year.. I still have another high mile e92 335i but I drive for work so in a bind. Appreciate all your feedback & opinions on the car & current prices 🤙
    I was actually going to reach out to you realizing that your lease was coming up to see if I could buy yours out. But I have to go with the manual. Crazy that you just put out this video that you were turning it in.
    Well done video - truly

    • @Reoniz
      @Reoniz  2 года назад +2

      Wow thank you so much, and I'm very sorry to hear about the rolled e92... my own e92 335i lci was probably my favorite car ever, wish I appreciated it more! At least you have another one !!!
      And ya, things are absolutely crazy, in retrospect I wish I had gone with a 6-speed ZHP... but oh well.
      And ya, I actually ended up selling it back to a dealer for some positive equity, and according to my Instagram, a kid already bought it!
      Nonetheless, with f30 prices so high, I'd consider a 16' or 17' M2 manual... it's ultimately gonna cost a bit more, and it has the slightly weaker N55 (that you seem to be very familiar with) but it's also a heck of a lot more car. In many ways, it's a very natural evolution from the e92 335i, just with numb steering 🤧👍

    My bad..... didn’t realize a lease....of course then, what you’re doing make sure sense. Man I can remember back in 2005 leasing the newly designed 2006 Subaru STI for $550 a month with no money down. It was probably around 38k new back then but it was worth it. I was much younger back then and I can recall all the mods I did to car and eventually traded it in without taking Mods off and selling them..... how stupid was that?! Miss that car so much. But yeah whatever dealer buys your car ( or I guess we can say trade in ) DONT let them say ‘well the market is only up for selling cars not US buying them’ (trade in)...... call bs on that immediately and be prepared to walk out. Don’t let that greed grind you down.

    • @Reoniz
      @Reoniz  2 года назад

      No worries at all!! Firstly, your 06' STI sounds like the stuff of dreams... reminds of my first performance car of which I too spent far too much money on mods and then simply turned her back in to the dealer 🤧
      And yes, I spoke to just about every BMW dealer in the area before making my decision to move forward with the dealer that offered me the most... BMW financial strong-armed all current lessees a bit with blocking any 3rd party sales, so my only option was a BMW dealer if I wanted to avoid taxes. They surely have the car listed for quite a bit more than they gave me... but at the end of the day, a ZHP is only "okay" and hard to market, so I'll take my slight profit in equity and lack of a disposition fee.
      Seriously tune in for my new car video sometime in the next couple months 😎👍

    I own a 2011 BMW 328i convertible and it has hydraulic steering and a fully aspirated straight 6 engine. I will not being letting it go anytime soon, drives smoothly, has navigation and a hard top. That's absolutely true!! The N52 motor you have, while not nearly as zippy as the new turbo 4's... both sounds better and provides far greater if not some of the greasiest reliability from a BMW motor ever!

    Good video and you mentioned very correctly a used and new car market that is completely unreasonable and may be like this for another possible 2 years. But it appears you are selling this car and you’re about to enter this horrible market as you buy another car?! Idk man I think you should keep this for another 2 years....because to be honest even though it’s a zhp you’re unlikely to get the money you want. Most people have paused buying new and used and sticking with what they got for now. Unless you run into some kid that lives with his rich parents and has nothing better to do but overpay 8k for a used car then you’re gonna keep getting lo balled.....keep that car man and wait it out! You’re gonna get ripped either way. And remember the less that people buy the quicker the market goes back down. And in N.J. that IS happening....status craved people who only buy to up status to try and look rich, even they are pausing on buys! It’s hilarious.....and you can laugh in the face of any used car salesman that gives you the pitch....

    • @Reoniz
      @Reoniz  2 года назад +1

      No you're absolutely right!! I actually leased this car though, so my choices were to return it and pay disposition, buy it out (at what was too high of a residual IMO), or to sell it to a willing dealer for some positive equity...
      I chose that last option because it made the most sense to me AND I found what I thought was a justifiable new car option.
      Sometime in December I should have a video out on my new car and in it I'll surely explain why I chose it and why it made the most sense.
      But essentially yes, everything you said is true, and if I owned my 340i I would've heeded your advice of keeping it. But I did what I had to considering my limited options! Hope that makes sense 😎

    • @Reoniz
      @Reoniz  2 года назад +2

      Before I answer, let me add some context, I sold it to a dealer for $40k who then sold it for the low 40's to someone who after tax spent damn near $50k all in...
      The reason I don't think these cars are worth quite that much is two fold... 1 is that I could've grabbed a new one in 18' for $50k plus tax (for a ZHP)... I don't think it's justified to spend anything close to that 4 years later with the G20's now being out and the wear and tear on these cars
      The second part is that at around $40k, and even in these crazy times market wise, I think there are other cars for the money that are either more value or will hold value better... for instance an 'ok' e92 DCT or 996 Carrera
      Ultimately, the 340i's are sweet, but make more sense to me in the low-ish $30's - just the nature of this insane car market 🤷🏻‍♂️

      My 340i I just purchased has the track handling package. As well as, driver assistance package, winter package and it has rear sunshades as well as the automatic sunshade on rear windshield.
      Aside from that it is a 2017 with 29k miles. With all the add ons I would much rather spend 38k on this before buying an outdated e92. @@Reoniz Hi. I too have a leased 340i that’s due for return next week. How did you “sell” this car to a BMW dealer? Don’t they just offer you the residual?

    • @Reoniz

      @@jong4419 so I shopped it around at all the local BMW dealers (there's a ton here in SoCal) and just took the highest offer I received... which ended up being a decent amount above the residual and saved me from paying that $350 disposition fee!

      Ya but you'd usually be underwater on an aggressive lease... where simply turning it in and paying the $350 disposition fee would be your best bet. In this case (due to the insane market) I had the opportunity to collect some $$$. My only other choice was to buy this car at too high of a price imo, so time to switch it up and keep my monthly expenses manageable 👍👍
