This is the first time I have seen Elizabeth Cotten playing, it's simply amazing. I knew she played a right hand strung guitar upside down because I heard Ramblin' Jack Elliot talk about it. He tells the story about how, when she was a young girl, she wasn't allowed to play guitar. So when the house was empty she used to sneak a go on her brothers guitar which was right handed but she was left handed. So she learned to play a right handed guitar in the left hand position. If you are a guitarist (and/or gave her a thumbs down) give it a try.

Elizabeth Cotten WAS "The Sweet By And By." ... We are SO LUCKY to have these TV appearances so we can see how she produced her beautiful sound with her TOTALLY original self-taught technique. .... I've been playing for 40 years and She STILL blows me away.
There is a statue of her on the South Side of Syracuse NY, sadly hidden from the public passing. Her son, Pastor Larry Ellis passed away a few years back. A man also after God's own heart.

Its amazing this was recorded and saved. She's a gift to music and the world. So many musicians inspired by her and other guitar players of eras gone by. They're gone but never forgotten. RIP Eddies on his way up there to jam with you all.
Well, now I’ve seen her! An old man, showed me how to “Pick Cotton” on my old Silvertone Guitar back in the fifties. The song was Freight Train. Said that he learned it from a Black Lady. Didn’t get the connection until some years later that her name was Cotton. Worked out a style with Thumb and three fingers to where l could play a lot of songs that way. Seems that her Heart plays the Guitar. Sweet Lady! Thanks! Great Video!
I got a guitar about 5 years ago. I don't have money for lessons. I got a book with chords and notes. I watched some RUclips videos. I have been doing something close to this 2 finger cotton picking style because my fingers aren't quite coordinated enough to all jump in at once without making a mess. I thought it was an incorrect way to play but I was getting some pretty sounds so I stuck with it along with continuing to practice with all five. 2 fingers still sound better than 5 when I play. At least now I can proudly say. It's the cotton picking method! If someone gives me guff. Lol
All the greats will say this: _if it sounds good, it is good._ That said, although I have been playing, recording and teaching guitar for four decades now myself, I always go check out lessons here on youtube from *Guthrie Trapp.* He's an amazing country and blues player for the most part. But as a mostly progressive rock and neo-classical metal guitarist myself, I am really enjoying learning country guitar from him and filling in the gaps of my rather average blues playing. I highly recommend his channel for all skill levels too. As an instructor myself, it's plain to see he takes plenty of time to help beginners even more than intermediate players. And he just has a lovely down-home style of teaching and he is well spoken, humble and polite. I think you may enjoy it as much as I do. There are other channels too that can fill in any of the basics you may need, in case Guthrie misses something you need in particular. And on top of that, he seems to attract a lovely crowd of viewers who can be helpful in their own right too if you post a question. Certainly I always do my best to answer when I see them too. Happy playing. ^-^
This is nuts. First time I've ever seen someone play the guitar upside down and backward. It's crazy how people are able to adapt things for themselves. Absolutely amazing testament to the genius of the human mind.

Congrats on your induction to the rock n roll hall of fame! I know it’s long overdue, but better late than never.
@Fred Limkin I am a qualified lesbian
She is cool and amazing, God Bless Her way up there at Home.
I remember seeing her in person. She was wonderful. Don't forget, she gave the song "Freight Train" to generations of American children. An underappreciated treasure.
I've never heard that song freight train. I'm going on you tube to find it .
This makes me wish I could hug my grandma again
Elizabeth Cotten WAS "The Sweet By And By." ... We are SO LUCKY to have these TV appearances so we can see how she produced her beautiful sound with her TOTALLY original self-taught technique. .... I've been playing for 40 years and She STILL blows me away.
She can do more with two fingers than I can with 10 fingers and 10 toes! Beautiful in its purity and simplicity!
I'm sure this lady is in heaven. The last will be first.
There is a statue of her on the South Side of Syracuse NY, sadly hidden from the public passing. Her son, Pastor Larry Ellis passed away a few years back. A man also after God's own heart.
❤
I'll be headed that way!
Never would've known smh...
Was she from Syracuse?
Im surprised BLM or ANtiFa havent torn down the statue yet.
I’m so happy this footage exists for everyone.
Never seen anyone playing upside down perfectly...awesome
If you know the guitar 🎸 and will understand how great this woman really was everything is upside-down wow what a talent she was B1👏🏿👊🏿✊🏿
back her days they never got the regonition that they deserved
Mozart too led a pretty miserable life !!!
What is good?
Wow... What amazing talent.
Note she's playing the guitar left-handed with the strings strung backwards, playing the bass with her forefinger rather than her thumb. Amazing!
How could you not appreciate her talent and grace?
@Ao, how are you doing, I wish you a lovely new week? I have an important information I wanna pass to you , do you mind if I say it right here or we should talk private 🙏?
It's upside down , still awesome to watch and listen to
wow...she had my grandma face, mother of my father! ❤️
Its amazing this was recorded and saved. She's a gift to music and the world. So many musicians inspired by her and other guitar players of eras gone by. They're gone but never forgotten. RIP Eddies on his way up there to jam with you all.
Elizabeth Cotton, she's like the left handed, right hand guitar slinging grandmother you wished you had. Awesome.

Something about this woman brings tears to my eyes. I just 'love' her
Me too ; - ;
Marvellous.
Incredible! Nothing short...just beautiful...
Everyone's sweet grandma ... legend. She says she picks with 2 fingers ... I hear 20!
Lol
All the greats will say this: _if it sounds good, it is good._
That said, although I have been playing, recording and teaching guitar for four decades now myself, I always go check out lessons here on youtube from *Guthrie Trapp.* He's an amazing country and blues player for the most part.
J Martin you lucky thing
Still truly amazed by this performance in 2023
This is nuts. First time I've ever seen someone play the guitar upside down and backward. It's crazy how people are able to adapt things for themselves. Absolutely amazing testament to the genius of the human mind.
Jimmy Hendrix did
@Colleen De koningShe is playing completely inverted. Including the strings. That's a lot different than what Hendrix did and what you're talking about.
How can anyone dislike this fantastic lady and her natural talent. It still sounds fresh in 2020 which says a lot about the music of today.
That ISS😁😁😁

Playing a right handed guitar 🎸 left handed without rearranging the strings. How awesome is that. And great playing as well.
She just melts my heart
Absolutely beautiful performance by a gracious lady.
It amazes me that she is playing upside down. Hendrix played the same way. Lovely
Lovey I agree but hendrix played right hand guitar strung left
@@MeonO_O .... yup.... Low string (Big) should be on top.... I’m a lefty... so I really notice stuff like that...
In fact My parents are right handed
and my brother, sister and myself are all left.... which is very rare... or odd...lol
This is absolutely precious. I love her! And this song.
I feel like I've just been able to see something so, so special.
The moment when you discover something new and beautiful. This woman is amazing... Thank you Jah...
Go on, mama! And she’ll play it with her eyes closed. Love it!
darylmichael7 , wonderful,
What a treasure. I have never of heard of her. Too bad she was not given more opportunity in life.
I am a fan now since I have heard her singing and play her music.
Not my style of music but wow you gotta appreciate her talent and how lucky are we that we got it on video
