I’m literally so grateful to say this is my great great grandmother ❤️
Wow!
You might want to pick up a guitar and find out if that talent washed it’s was down!
❤ wow❤
Nice!❤
very cool. ❤
she is playing a right handed guitar, she has it turned upside down. How is she doing this, with her eyes closed at that? I don't know if anyone understands the talent and sheer craziness of what she managed to pull off here. As a guitar player, I'm floored!
When the grandma is a lot cooler than the grandchild
I know a guy who learned that.. if you learn it that way it makes sense
Dick Dale used the same technique
My brother played like that until he could afford a left ha did bass
Kris Rowe also plays like this
I wonder if she ever dreamed that 3.2 million people would stop and watch her play her guitar? It’s so freaking cool to watch these old videos and get to love the musicians and artists of yesteryear. My grandfather would have loved this 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
No, she didn't dream it. She had no idea RUclips would be invented.
@Melinda Bloodworth. Oh yes she never believed.
Before the internet I don't think anyone would or could think of various races of all nations will ever be watching a footage of an artist playing an instrument.
I think she dislikes all the fighting amongst commenters , a mix of independent google instant researchers and speech police , having it out on nano level corrections , no humorous writing allowed , no spelling mistakes , nuovo disorder del mundo in play . And here to stay . I'll be on my way , good day . Let her play .
@Melinda bloodworth. So how are you doing today?
This is the lady wrote the standard "Freight Train" when she was 12 years old. Wonderful, clean technique, and a beautiful person to boot. 10/10.
Is this: freight train freight train going so fast, freight train freight train going so fast, I don't know what train he's on, won't you tell me where he's gone.
I don't know this lady but if it is, British singer Lonnie Donegan sang it.

She’s playing a right handed guitar while holding it left handed..... which makes the strings backwards or upside down....

It's how she learned. Was her daddy's guitar and he didn't want to restring it for her.
Elizabeth played at our grade school. That was about 45 years ago. I still remember bits and pieces from when I was 6 or 7. She was really nice, we love her.
You are so lucky Corey! I would have loved to hear her.
She's playing a right-handed guitar as a left-handed player, without changing the positions of the strings. Awesome!

As a guitar player I'm always amazed that people can play guitar upside down. The guitar is hard enough. Amazing style and technique witnessed here. Feeling humbled
I too, play a right hander upside down and it can be tricky but very rewarding!!

@Jill Bowers Wrong dude.
@Jill Bowers You need to get your eyes checked. If you just look at this video, you can clearly see this lady has her strings setup right-handed, and her guitar is upside down. And Jimi Hendrix was very well known for playing the guitar pretty much any way and configuration he wanted to (or needed to), but BY FAR the VAST majority of the time, he played a right-handed strat, strung left-handed.

Um we are African descendants so is just as well said it's a African style of guitar playing that survived the trans Atlantic.
This is her own style of fingerpicking she called "Cotton picken"". She was the nanny for the Pete Seeger family until they discovered she was a musical genius. I believe she got to tour a little and share her gift with her many fans. Freight Train is, of course, a classic. Gerry Garcia and David Grisman covered it on one of the kid's albums they did in the 90's.
Well, now I’ve seen her! An old man, showed me how to “Pick Cotton” on my old Silvertone Guitar back in the fifties. The song was Freight Train. Said that he learned it from a Black Lady. Didn’t get the connection until some years later that her name was Cotton. Worked out a style with Thumb and three fingers to where l could play a lot of songs that way. Seems that her Heart plays the Guitar. Sweet Lady! Thanks! Great Video!
I got a guitar about 5 years ago. I don't have money for lessons. I got a book with chords and notes. I watched some RUclips videos. I have been doing something close to this 2 finger cotton picking style because my fingers aren't quite coordinated enough to all jump in at once without making a mess. I thought it was an incorrect way to play but I was getting some pretty sounds so I stuck with it along with continuing to practice with all five. 2 fingers still sound better than 5 when I play. At least now I can proudly say. It's the cotton picking method! If someone gives me guff. Lol
All the greats will say this: _if it sounds good, it is good._
That said, although I have been playing, recording and teaching guitar for four decades now myself, I always go check out lessons here on youtube from *Guthrie Trapp.* He's an amazing country and blues player for the most part. But as a mostly progressive rock and neo-classical metal guitarist myself, I am really enjoying learning country guitar from him and filling in the gaps of my rather average blues playing.
I highly recommend his channel for all skill levels too. As an instructor myself, it's plain to see he takes plenty of time to help beginners even more than intermediate players. And he just has a lovely down-home style of teaching and he is well spoken, humble and polite. I think you may enjoy it as much as I do.
There are other channels too that can fill in any of the basics you may need, in case Guthrie misses something you need in particular. And on top of that, he seems to attract a lovely crowd of viewers who can be helpful in their own right too if you post a question. Certainly I always do my best to answer when I see them too.
Happy playing. ^-^

There's something about Elizabeth Cotton's playing that resonates with people on a deep level. You can see how much she feels the music, and it comes out so effortlessly through her playing.
If she can do this by using only two fingers then I can imagine how awesome she was with all of them.

Yes, I was astounded at the numbers of thumbs down. Must have been some silly concerted killjoy effort.
Fabulous
This is the first time I have seen Elizabeth Cotten playing, it's simply amazing. I knew she played a right hand strung guitar upside down because I heard Ramblin' Jack Elliot talk about it. He tells the story about how, when she was a young girl, she wasn't allowed to play guitar. So when the house was empty she used to sneak a go on her brothers guitar which was right handed but she was left handed. So she learned to play a right handed guitar in the left hand position. If you are a guitarist (and/or gave her a thumbs down) give it a try.

Back then not many people could make it in the music industry, specially women, so I knew this was going to be good before even listening to it.
Such beautiful, fluid fingerstyle. Very few bells and whistles; just a humble heart sharing her art.
Anyone else notice how she's playing the guitar as a left hander yet without switching the strings. (The base notes at the bottom!). Unbelievable!
This is nuts. First time I've ever seen someone play the guitar upside down and backward. It's crazy how people are able to adapt things for themselves. Absolutely amazing testament to the genius of the human mind.

Correct. Also Albert King and Doyle Bramhall 3rd play in this manner.Hendrix was supposedly capable although he played orthodox.
And like myself
as well as myself, who was inspired by Otis Rush, another Cotten Picker, when we met in 1972
I just flip my hand over and play from the top instead of the bottom....of course, I really don't play guitar, but can slug out some power chords and a walking bass line....still....flips people on their ear when they see it. =)
It's one thing to be a lefty and play a righty guitar upside down, but to play it fingerstyle, now THAT is truly impressive!
I met a guy that could do this. I thought he was just holding my guitar upside down and didn't know. I was about to correct him when he started to play it upside down and backwards.. I was blown away.
