    super informative. i have a bachelor's in psych and i'm trying to decide what to do next. this was super helpful! I originally planned on doing clinical psychology but after working a year in a clinical setting, i realized that i get DRAINED from too much personal interaction. i love helping people and being useful but i'm too introverted for that. i love research and math. :D thank you for addressing these points!

    • @JessicaJane4
      @JessicaJane4  3 года назад +19

      If stats is a weak point for you, I’d advise you get tutoring or spend extra time studying the concept. In grad school you’ll get a thorough understanding of stats and teachers are usually open to lending extra help or explanations. Don’t let stats deter you in pursuing IO.

      I would give the opposite advice as someone who is bad at stats and is currently a MS in IO PSychology student. I am so ready to drop out, everything is stats and data analysis. It’s all about measuring behavior, that’s what differentiates IO from other fields. I hate to ve negative but I’ve never been more unhappy than since I started IO.

      When do the statistics classes start?

    • @jessicaguillen9473
      @jessicaguillen9473 3 года назад +6

      Chris Reynolds I am only speaking from my experience. You don’t have to be super smart, but if statistics doesn’t come easy to you, you have to be ready to put in the work and it is a ton. On average I spend about 6 hours per class outside of the 2hrs/class every week just reading the long articles and trying to understand the tables, etc. Scientific articles are a pain to read and everything connnects to statistics in this field at the end of the day. Don’t get me wrong I have gotten A’s in all my classes so far, but I have yet to enjoy at least 1 meeting. I have been a straight A’s student my whole college career. For me the stats classes started right from the first semester, data analysis, research methods, even my motivation class that she talks about here, while it was full of theory and I enjoyed it, all our projects still required using statistics. The main thing in this field is that they believe “no opinion matters unless you have collected and analyzed the data and have a report to back it up” this isn’t philosophy (my professors words) so it’s discouraging, because even when you do collect the data and analyze it, there’s so many tests to do to make sure your results are significant and valid and you can’t EVER claim you’re right because “there’s always room for error” and they believe it’s the beauty of it, since it’s science. I personally find it pointless! But I’m sure everyone is different and some people will like it.

    • @alohaXamanda
      @alohaXamanda 3 года назад

      I can say that I chose masters level in order to emphasize the 'practitioner' aspect of the 'scholar-practitioner' model, so that I would have the skills to work in a company. I don't think one is better than the other, it's more about what your career goals are. If you want to teach and do research a phd is probably best, if you want to work more directly with organizations using research and best practices masters is best, but you can always get a phd even if your masters program is meant to be a terminal degree. Oh, and you can be a contract consultant using the networking tools provided by SIOP membership, so that is similar to a 'private practice' in clinical psych. I don't know if that's helpful, but that's what I've learned so far in my program.

      I changed to psych with two semesters left. I did not want to be an accountant. After a year internship, i realized the career i was pursuing was going to be demoralizing. Also, i worked in the internal audit department. Basically we review regulator compliance, risk management, and workplace efficiency. I loved witnessing my managers pitch these huge ideas for company wide improvements. However, i didn want to spend years doing the boring stuff to get to management.
      I choose I/O psych because it applies everything im good at: data analysis, working with executive leadership, computer information systems. The future is with computers, however the people need to learn how use these tools to produce the most efficient products and services.

Based on my experience in school, not everyone understands it entirely but you do have some peers who do and will help you, along with your professors. You will learn the principles and application of those. Try not to let stats hinder you if this is something you really want. If you’re open to learning and apply yourself, you’ll get it.

      Psychology is always a great major to have when entering grad school but other BA's such as business, sociology, or HR are good areas.
