Why You Shouldn't Lift Your 20 Year Old Jeep | WJ TJ ZJ XJ Grand Cherokee

  • Today I woke up and decided I don't want to keep getting the same message of what should I do to my Jeep. I will reply do maintenance. The most important thing to do on a 20 year old Jeep is to Keep It Running! 😂
    Now if you want to lift for most people a 2-3 Inch Lift with 31s will be more than enough. You will want to add extended front sway bar links (Get Quick disconnects), New Shocks ( Bilsteins are good all around), Front Adjustable control arms lowers (Preferably the full kit), A Arm Spacer or IRO A Arm is worth the money, and a Front Drive Shaft ( Dan Como or Danco Driveshafts facebook page), Adjustable Track bar, Along with all maintenance items. This will be the best build for most people.
    Going 4-6 Inches You will want Shocks, Sway bar disconnects, Extended links for rear, Spring retainers, Extended Bump stops, Extended Brake Lines, Front and Rear Long Arm, Front Double Cardan Driveshaft, Rear SYE, Steering Kit like Trailforged, and Maintenance items.
    Yes the Price to make the builds right is pretty high. That is the reason I recommend you focus on maintenance first and just get some All terrains. You will make it most places! And once you finish replacing all the worn joints and bushings then start looking into a lift kit and add on all the other things the kits miss.

    Yep always consider the intended use of the Jeep. Mine is an old 1994 ZJ 5.2 that I had to replace many parts. Especially after experiencing severe death wobble. I installed all new steering parts 4 new springs, all 4 frnt control arms and added a basic 2" Rough Country lift with 4 HD shocks. It's not for trail or rock climbing, it's for navigating the rocky roads and being able to go through SLIGHTLY higher water on roads in monsoon season here in AZ. I suggest buying quality parts as I found that the cheapy Rock Auto trac bar is already worn out and sway bar links broke after 15 months of regular use. Now going with Moog for both of those things. Thanks for sharing your info and opinions.

    Bought a rust free 2003 limited 4.7 HO 122 k that spent its life in New Mexico (gotta love the desert climate for preserving vehicles). Flew to Texas to pick it up at a dealer Friday morning and drove it back to South Dakota Saturday and the build began. 6.5 in IRO rock link pro. IRO exhaust. IRO frame stiffeners. Trail Forged OTK one ton steering. THOR intake (really opens up a lot of room under the hood). HKOffRoad Street Sweeper hidden winch mount modified by Bash to fit my APEX 12000 winch. Bash is the best on the internet, Great guy and great products and customer service second to none! 34 inch M/T Baja Boss ATs. 12OclockLabs speedo re-calibration. What a money pit....more to come. Exactly, it's like sawing off your muffler to gain HP. It's a bs mo and a great way to throw your cash away. I did a full rebuild, motor, full suspension and frame straightened. Shocks. Seat cushions and upholstery. The coup d' grass was the new factory engine wiring harness. Why I had injector wires soldered to the valve covers. A testament to the forgiving nature of the PCM. But yeah, get your mechanicals together before going "full loco" with the 8" lift. You're looking at over 15K for a full gut and rebuild. That being said once the initial cash out lay is absorbed it's still less money than a 2017 WL2 with 100k on the odo.

  • @pnwguy5945
    @pnwguy5945 2 года назад +2

    Well said, I agree to think twice before lifting your vehicle. I have a 2002 WJ with the 4.0. Bought it new. I lifted it in 2006 with 96K on the clock with a 2'' BB by Rocky Road. Ran that 2'' in it until about 200K in 2014. Then I installed a 3.5'' Rocky Road lift and Kevin's offroad anti death wobble kit. Now in 2022, the ol' WJ is at 360K and all suspension components are worn and death wobble is becoming a problem. I just ordered all new suspension parts by Crown to bring it back stock. Love my old Jeep but now I just want less maintenance and I am actually excited about it being back at stock height. I guess I just grew out of the thrill of driving and maintaining a lifted vehicle. But for anybody who does decide to lift their Jeep, I get it, I've been there and can fully relate. Just plan on spending more time and money on maintenance than you ever would on a stock Jeep. And for me that time and money just isn't worth it anymore...

    I put a lot into my WJ, and as much as I love the way it looks and love all the work I done to it and projects I installed (like huge overlanding electrical system, onboard air, steel bumper, winch, lift, wheels, roof platform system, etc)... I feel like I'd have been happier if I did it all to a new(er) jeep wrangler instead.

    • @NajarOffroad

      Yea probably especially with all the aftermarket support for wrangler! But the WJs are just as capable to

    • @jamesdewer
      @jamesdewer 2 года назад

      Yeah it's funny how WJ's don't really get as much attention as they should. They're in a weird space right now there's a crapload of them being retired and put out to the pasture. There's not a whole lot of repair parts and electrical harnesses etc out there for them so a lot of them are just held together with tape and zip ties. The real tricked out parts are all for wranglers for sure and YJ's. But performance parts for WJ's far and few between and expensive when you do find one. The one upgrade I would recommend if you're going to keep it stock height is the only thing would be the transmission crossmember cuz that hangs up and rolls rocks under you more than anything.

  • @jamesdewer
    @jamesdewer 2 года назад +1

    Should you lift it lol? There is absolutely no other reason to even buy one of these turds. Like ANY old truck if you work on it yourself parts are reasonable and it's affordable. If you need a mechanic just buy a new wrangler. You don't have to do everything at once. I'm very happy with doing it one step at a time. As of now I have enough left overs to do a completely new 3" IRO lift on another WJ which I intend to do (have a I6, need a V8 to go with it).

    • @NajarOffroad
      @NajarOffroad  2 года назад +1

      Haha I love that line😂 “if you need a mechanic just buy a Wrangler” 😂 yea I had a ton of parts to which is how we lifted my Friends WJ but I’ve definitely have spent more money going from stock to budget boost then 4.5 inch and now 6.5 🤦‍♂️

  • @riverbankfisher
    @riverbankfisher 2 года назад +1

    Best to leave a Jeep riding on its stock suspension, unless you go out for extreme rock climbing. The Center of Gravity of a WJ is high enough to place it at risk of a rollover if corners are taken too fast, and that risk rises dramatically once the suspension is monkeyed with and the vehicle is put up on stilts.
    That teetering high-heel look is so 1980s and turns a Jeep into a death trap. Leave well enough alone and keep things stock. Some fashion fads are best left to die natural deaths, and lifted suspensions rank high on that list.
