Just found your channel. Very interesting as a retired pro driver originally from the UK now living in the US. Good job and very informative. I know the roads here are a lot bigger but I had forgotten how basic the cabs were in the UK compared to the US cabs which have showers, TV's, and are very luxurious appointments by comparison. We don't have many, if any cameras here instead of mirrors but there seems to be a lot of negatives with that system. Appreciate your good positive outlook on lorry driving in the UK, and I am amazed at the technology involved these days for driving a lorry.

Hi Ian, just found your channel and subscribed, great to see someone who is honest about the life of a truck driver. Keep up the good work, and looking forward to your future videos.

I spent a few years in the USA driving and the company I worked for used a system called "Qualcomm" in their trucks. It was similar in nature to that screen on the dash of the DAF. The system itself provided your sat nav, workflow, fuel stops and tachograph. It was well ahead of its time by comparison to the standard tachograph system we use here today. Amazing piece of kit.

When I drove domestic trucking, I never built up stress thinking when I would or should be back home. Every time dispatcher called, it could be a load to anywhere in the country, or getting straight home. Most likely home by weekend anyway, sometimes sleeping at home every day of the week if luck happened. Like Ian said, things and delays happen all the time in trucking.

I tried the mirror cams once only for a short time of around an hour in the truck and I didn't like them at all. The main reason is that with regular mirrors when you move your head or line of sight your view or what your looking at changes but you can't do that with mirror cams, it will always be the same view no matter.

After 2 years in Europe in a Daf cf… banging my head….I got a XG in January. The space is great, nice to drive good visibility…think Volvo is a better truck with it’s gearbox and build quality but the XG is much improved over the old models.

I wouldn't recommend trucks to anyone. Sleeping in a tin box all yout life is not great and thats what happens before you know it friends have forgotten about u because your gone all the time and sure when u come home even the dogs in the yard wont remember ya. Plus the health benefits trucks offer.. hmm

Have seen on Facebook a lot of those vans with the curtain sides and the roof sleeper have been stopped in the UK and some of them are over the train weight even when empty. One the other week was near 7 tons loaded well over weight.

Where there is a Transic's box in a lorry there is cameras looking at You inside Lorry. Transic's box is the message/sat nav Ian was using. Beware.

@@user-km7zo1mm3p Nothing funny about it.More like trying to unhide things. Just wanted to warn drivers about camera looking at em inside the cab. Alot of Lorry owners who have these systems don't always tell new drivers about cameras. Like I said beware.

@@John-cx3nm that says more about the haulier. Work for a snake at your own risk. I just don't understand the fear of cameras in a cab. If you're driving fine, if sleeping/finished work for the day cover them over. A professional driver shouldn't be doing anything that merits a bollixin while at the wheel simple as. The vast majority of work places now a days have cctv I don't understand why truckers feel excempt.

We’ve got a load of these wagons in our company and drivers hate the cameras. Poor depth of vision, bit like watching a VHS tape in terms of clarity of vision. Nighttime is horrific, similar to having cataracts, lights are blurred behind you. Difficult to see trucks flashing you in or out. The drivers camera is worst. Difficult to judge where the cameras are so along narrow roads there is a tendency to hit them. Even worst is when they go down and the tablets in side the cab go blank. Figure that out when you are on a motorway lane two or three and you see nothing. How these things ever got industry acceptance is beyond me. Bring back wing mirrors. Stick a window in the back of the cab for perfect blindside reversing. The overlays to assist with distance get in the way for certain deliveries and can’t be removed.

There are plenty marriages that are going strong because himself is away all week. I worked a 7-3 job operating equipment in NYC for 12 years and while the money was good the commute took on average 18 hours out of my life for a 5 day week and then your working with lads bringing the attitude and problems into work. I packed it in and got a truck and gone 12 days now and then take 7 days off and the Missus reckons I am a different man now and not such a cranky bollox.

I agree with you on it being a good career but only if its bred into u or something u always wanted to do yourself in which case u will balance family and fitness around it. Btw u really should refer to it as a Trade because it is and has an apprenticeship now and bout time bcos its just as skilled if not more then your tippical block layer and or bricky lets face it one on top of two alday is pretty simple in more ways then one!
