      Agreed, just wish I could afford a Sonor kit. They’re actually my favorite drum manufacturers of all time. Their kits just sound so good, and even though they are almost the same price as DW kits, they’re much better sounding, imo. I don’t know what it is about DW kits, but I’ve just never liked, the only DW drum I would by is a snare drum. But, TAMA kits are incredible, too. There are so many great drum makers out there that it’s hard to choose a favorite. But, DCP did on a good, by showing how each kit sounds.

      i think that's mostly the single ply clears heads.

    • @phillamoore157
      @phillamoore157 Год назад +1

      It's the thickness of the shells. To sit behind a set of drums with a shell that thick is incredible. Thin maple has a beautiful open, warm sound. But, when you have a shell half inch thick it's the difference between flicking a piece of saran-wrap with your pinky, and hitting concrete with a sledgehammer. I've got a set of Eames Mastertone's that have a 12ply shell, and it's absolutely spectacular....just in a different way. The only problem with the thicker shells is that you need a deeper shell to counter the pitch of the drum going up due to the shell thickness. Short of that, I'll pick the thicker shell any day of the week. Especially with recording.

    I've been playing for 48 years and all I can say is that I've had just about every brand under the sun and Sonor has the best engineering. You won't find a flaw in anything they make. I love my 1985 Horst LInk Signature kit (bubinga). And talk about customizable! They've been doing that for quite a long time. Mine is a 20 x 16, 15 x 15, 12 x 12, and a 14 x 6 1/2" configuration (they were a basket case when I got them, but it only took some elbow grease and new heads to get them sounding, and looking, great). The hardware on Sonor drums may look a bit odd, but it's bullet proof and the woods that they use are only the best!
    Having said that, I did really like the sound of all of the kits. I think the Sonor had the most distinctive sound, but, as you said, that may be because of their slightly undersized shells with the "floating" heads. The DW actually sounded the "roundest" to me and the Tama had a lot of attack. The Sonor, though, did have a fuller tone and seemed to work better at both the low and high tuning ranges.
    Great video! I would also love to see comparisons between high end Gretsch, Ludwig, Yamaha, and Pearl. They may not be in the same "boutique" range as the DW, Tama, and Sonor kits from this video, but they all make some incredible "high end" kits that are worth checking out.
    Also, here's an idea for a future video...compare vintage kits of about the same year. Maybe late 60's? Whatever you might have...Ludwig, Slingerland, Rogers, Gretsch and maybe even (if you have these) Premier and Sonor? It would be cool to see how they were all made back then and hear the differences.
    Cheers!

    I agree that they all sound good. It would’ve been nice to have a head-to-head comparison, as it’s hard to remember what each one sounds like. I realize this would’ve extended the length of the video. Some observations, on the DW kit, I didn’t like how the seams came together on the floor Tom from the back looks strange to me. I found the finish on the Tama kit rather boring, and on the Sonor kit, the mounting system like Shane says, you like it or hate it. Didn’t turn me on. But hey if I had the coin Id be thrilled to own any of these. I love how DCP invests the time to get the maximum sound and performance out of the drums they feature. Great job guys!

      "head to head comparison" they all also have different heads on, i like to hear they all with the same heads and you will always get a mismatched line up if you run the grain around the drum, i much prefer it running top to bottom

    The Tama and Sonor sounded great. I liked the wood finish on the Sonor but I kinda liked the Tama sound better. It's a toss up. Flip a coin. I've had Sonor Phonic all the way up to the newer Sonor and I can say, in my opinion, I hate that Sonor tom mount. But, like you said, you can order it without that big hunk of metal on your bass drum. Lately, I've been into mounting my first tom on a snare stand. I always hated the idea of that until I tried it, now it's pretty nice. Great video!

    I reached out to Tama directly on three occasions when inquiring about building my dream kit. They never got back to me. So I went with Pearl. I've played Pearl for 31 years, I love the quality, durability, and craftsmanship, and I only have an Export! lol. I just bought a 13 Piece Pearl Reference. Sorry Tama, if you replied to me you may have gotten that order!

    I have a 15 year old hand made Star Classic. From the time when they were top of the line and I see they just changed de name to Star for the lineup. For instance, my Starclasics pressure hole ring is made of wood, as in the modern Star series, its made in Japan and de series and the name of the guy who made it is hand writen in each drum from de inside. Best mapple drums around.

    Once again...great vid!!! Watched this vid maybe 50x already.. For me the only vids that give me, due to full mic/room and overheads, the clear understanding on how the drums really sound from diff perspectives! Sonorrrrrr....although I currently own a DW Collectors Maple and a Tama Star Walnut I'm in love with Sonor since my very first kit a Force3000 birch some 28 years ago. Hearing this kit I remember why..!!! Man... attack, full sound, articulation, roaring bass and floors and a clear sound (I really hate the OINGGGG on toms when not holding the keynote!). I the lower tuning that is...on the higher tuning (which I don't prefer) the Tama sounded best to me. But that leaves me to a point I hope could be a contribution to your vids... Since we as drummers have tuning devices now as well, why not give the tuning freq's from top and bottom heads? Would be a great addition on the vids (and learning steps for tuning in general for those in need of it..) I think!!
