The 5th part of my attempt to turn old garage to the nice new workshop for my personal projects. This time it's about modification of old car repair pit..
I don't need this pit for car repair but is good to have some space for tires storage so I decide to reduce a size to eliminate raising moisture and also use the material that left from garage building years ago. I also made a simple hydro insulation and a new cover made of reclaimed wood..
Next part is dedicated to floor leveling..

DANG I wish I had a grease-pit. When I was seventeen I worked a job at a lube company with two indoor grease pits, I learned to love 'em, you can get a LOT of work done easily in a pit besides lube jobs and oil changes, like exhaust work, differential work, gas tank R&R, rust eradication, motor mounts, etc. You're lucky.

I'm planning to build a 2 car garage with full length pits in each bay. In your opinion, would I need a beefy footer under each of the block walls on the sides of the pit? My thought is yes, but am trying to find out if that added cost would be needed.

Why you didn’t keep the pit ‘ be always handy for. Storage plus to keep some expensive tools. Shame

I had to do something with moisture conditions. There is still room for storage but just for tires, definitely not for tools because of moisture.. even I did insulation against raising moisture it's still not enough for sensitive surfaces to prevent oxidation.. Depends on the conditions where I live.. Deeper are moisture conditions too unsustainable in the long term..

Guy: The pit is too deep.
Also Guy: Now the pits so small it's only useful for storage.
Me: You know what else is good for storage? A normal size pit.

Good point but you forgot about the access, now it's much more comfortable.. I prefer easy access to the tires, easily drag them out without ladder and the must push them above my head.. That's why is there made one dais on the gate side.. To just jump in, with small effort throw the tire out and jump out as much easy as possible..

@@webblab2415 Couldn't you have just built a wooden platform? Then you could just lift it out if you ever needed a pit or sold the property and the pit is still useful.

Regard to moisture this would be a tricky as long term solution..

the car pit should be a bit lower. unless you are using a manual jet to make the car higher

Why make it so shallow? Can you stand up when there is a car over it?

this pit is no more for car reparation..it was..as part of original garage..but this room is now workshop for my personal projects..electronics, some small woodworking..some space primary for rapid development for electronic projects..CNC machine..3d printer..etc..not for car parking or reparation..now I use it as storage for tires (in Slovakia, according to weather during the year, we need at least two sets of different tires, so one set is always in storage)..for this purpose the pit was too big (deep) and raising moisture was a problem..now when is less deep + coat of insulation the issue is solved and tires are in more dry conditions..

there is quite small load on the bottom..its just a space for four wheels with tires..so I decide to do this without reinforcement..with just materials that I had around to keep budget as low as possible..but good point..will see after few years..
