Info Edit: At 31:40 Jon is explaining how to adjust the Quickie Pushrods and says to do "24 flats or 3 full rotations", the correct adjustment is 24 flats or 4 full rotations.
I dont mean to be so off topic but does someone know a trick to log back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly lost the account password. I love any tricks you can give me!
@Elijah Roman I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im in the hacking process now. Seems to take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I have accumulated all of the S&S parts to completely rebuild/renew the cam chest on my 2004. I really appreciate these how-to tutorials. I will be assembling and installing these parts in the next few days. You can damn well bet I will have my smartass phone beside me every step of the way. Thanks again.
I just installed the S&S 509C cam chest kit ... I used this video as a guide... Took the bike out today, what a difference. I also used a Daytona Twin Tec tuner... runs awesome!
Great job great video has to be one of the best tutorial videos on the cam chest I've ever seen great job I have fueling setup gear drive with 37 Andrew cams. I do have a diesel sounding motor. sounds like a Cummings when it gets hot. Been like that since he put the cans in never knew gear drive would be loud.
Yea, I agree! I've seen other videos, and didn't know about the hidden details covered on this video! Excellent job explaining it all! I liked and subscribed!!
S&S Cycle... awesome video. Very well explained. My manual says to use the tapered centering screws that screw into the tappet block (2 of them across from each other) while the other two bolts are installed. Then remove the 2 tapered centering screws and install the last two bolts and then torque to spec. It says that step is to make sure the tappets (lifters) do not hit the tappet block when they come up into it. Is that step not necessary or needed??
That's a good point! Our friends over at J&P have another Power Package video that shows this process, along with the specific tools for the job. You can check it out here: ruclips.net/video/VuUmM4l52FQ/видео.html
Didn’t show the technician rotating the rear wheel when aligning the oil pump during the torque sequence. Maybe someone was doing that out of camera view.
How bout a video explaining this same procedure on an 05 Harley 88 vtwin? That would help immensely. Not sure how cams go because I dont' have that big washer. Just a smaller like sleeve.
This is an '06 88" (it just had our 100" Big Bore Kit installed in part 1) so your process should be very similar. If you run into any issues don't hesitate to reach out to our tech team with a detailed email at sstech@sscycle.com!
A buddy of mine is looking for this cam kit for his touring twin cam but wants to know the best streetable cams because he rides long distances. He wants the s&s kit. Any information would gladly be appreciated
The "best" depends on how he rides, what's been done to the bike, and what he plans on doing. When he rides long distances is it highways or backroads, is it two-up and fully loaded down or solo with just an "essentials" bag, lots of factors to consider. Have him send us a message on his favorite social media channel, or drop us an email to sstech@sscycle.com and we'd be happy to help him get the ideal set up for him!
Today I watched another video where a guy is disassembling to replace the cams, and he pulls the tappets up to show that the hole was facing outboard away from the engine. Could it be that someone before him reassembled the bike incorrectly? And would it still run ok like that ?
I bought the kit and it comes with a small individually wrapped screw. What is this for? I've checked the instructions front to back and can't find where it belongs. I've also called your service desk but the lines are always busy.
@S&S Cycle, Inc I am getting ready to install this kit on my 2000 Softail Nightrain. I was wondering if I will be required to do any head work with this kit or if my stock heads and valve springs would be sufficient? Thanks in advance!
So long as you chose a set of bolt-in cams you should not require any headwork. You can confirm that your cams are bolt-in friendly here: www.sscycle.com/tech-info/cam-specs-overview
I have an 04 Low Rider, all stock w/SE slip-on dual exhaust. I would like to upgrade the cam chest to hydraulic cam chain tensioners w/ upgraded oil pump while still using stock cams. Secondly, what type of inner bearings would you suggest to go with? Lastly, does the S&S plate come with Timken bearings? Thanks.
If you are going through the trouble of opening the cam chest to replace the plate and pump, there's no reason to not do the cams as well. We recommend you check out this link: www.sscycle.com/2004/Harley-Davidson/Dyna-Low-Rider-FXDL/?hawkoutput=custom&searchId=ff2f72ca-a25a-4dd0-81e2-3f7974233a77&category=1%7cCamshafts#category=2%7CCamshafts%2FComplete%20Cam%20Chest%20Upgrade%20Kits
Awesome video. My question is I have a 2005 Soft Tail Deuse the motor is stock and has only 10400 miles on the odometer. It has EFI.what size cams and cam plate set would you recommend for a upgrade and would I have to get a tuner from changing the stock cams.
Hey Robert, a lot of factors go into choosing the right cam for you. How do you normally ride, solo or two up. Do you ride mainly highways, city streets, or twisty mountain roads? Where do you normally shift in the RPM range? Check out this page on our site for more cam info: www.sscycle.com/tech-info/cam-specs-overview
When you installed the lifters you put the oil hole facing the engine,I've done cam swaps twice and both bikes the oil hole was facing out from factory. Does it matter? Is that what s and s recommends?
Just tore down a 99 twin cam 88 that has never been into and the lifters had the holes facing each other. It must not matter much I think the oil channels around and finds its way into the holes.
I just installed an S&S 551 Cam kit in a 2011 103 FLT (Road Glide) The kit did not have any instructions for the pushrods, (S&S Quickee) So I went on RUclips and found 2 videos that both said Zero Lash and 20 Flats, Is that going to be a problem? Also in the kit there was a button head allen screw 1//4" NC by 1/2 inch long in a cellophane sealed bag, I can't find anything in the instructions indicating it's use and I can't see any open holes? Am I missing something?
That pushrod adjustment procedure sounds correct. As for the screw, some early 1999 models would use that screw to block off a chain oiler boss, this is not needed for your 2011 FLT.
Hey S & S, I am considering the 100" Winter Power Pack with silver cylinders, chain drive, and 585 easy start Cams. My bike is 2005 FXDC Superglide Custom carburated with 35,000 miles. 2 into 1 red thunder exhaust and a DK customs Air cleaner kit. I have a more aggressive riding style. Do you think the 585 is a good cam for my bike and myself? I wish you could substitute any cam into the kit as I would consider a 583 or 570. Thanks!
Hey Damien, that is a great question! If you are already considering the 570 & 583, the 100" power pack with the 585 will be your new best friend. Based on our experience with the 88" to 100" swap and a very heavy throttle wrist (that more than one of us might have) the 585 is absolutely the most fun, reliable, and fitting cam to pair with the 100" kit. We would not hesitate to recommend that kit for your specific setup and riding style.
If you weren’t doing the 100” kit then it could be a bigger concern, but with the added cubic inches you shouldn’t notice it lugging or feeling sluggish. That said, this is a very big change from your current engine so you may have a small learning curve of figuring out all the quirks of the new set up, but nothing that laying down some miles won’t clear up!
I have a 2019 Road King 107 M8 and would like to do a Cam Chest Kit. Which one do you recommend for my bike (I see multiple choices on S&S website) and do you have a certified mechanic shop in 85258 you cold also recommend? Thanks!!
Hey Robert, we would recommend the 465 for more around town riding (low end torque) and the 475 for highway speeds (horsepower). As for a shop near Scottsdale you have a lot of options! Try Black Canyon Motorworks and talk to Scot.
@S&S Cycle, Inc You guys rock! Thanks for your advice and input. I am more of a ride around town guy vs pounding out hey miles. I'll give Scot a shout as well. Thanks Again!
We do recommend swapping out the pushrods as well as the lifters. If you are already planning on the cam, plate and pump you should look into our Cam Chest Kits that come with everything you need. www.sscycle.com/2014/Harley-Davidson/Heritage-Softail-FLSTC/#category=1%7CCamshafts
I have always said Harley Davidson engines are overly labor intensive, their still using 1950’s/1960’s technology even in the Milwaukee 8 with the huge primary chain rotating in oil, pushrods, rocker arms, pushrod lifters , and a hot air cooled engine. I hope the Revolution Max can redirect HD to the modern age their claiming across their entire line.
I have a 2000 Dyna Wide Glide FXDWG and I have purchased a S&S cam plate kit includes cams and oil pump, the cams are 510C is there Anyone that is doing a 2000 FXDWG I would like to see one.
I wonder how many guys upgrade to a gear driven cam kit, and discover AFTER they open the cam chest that the runout is too excessive ... or worse still, ignore the runout check and bolt in the new gear driven cams on a wobbly cranked motor.
Info Edit: At 31:40 Jon is explaining how to adjust the Quickie Pushrods and says to do "24 flats or 3 full rotations", the correct adjustment is 24 flats or 4 full rotations.

Very good video but four turns is 24 Flats not three on adjusting the push rods
Correct, the initial adjustments for the Quickee Pushrods should be 24 flats or 4 full rotations, Jon accidentally says 3 full rotations in the video.
I noted that after you finished torquing down the chain tensioner, the dots of the chains were no longer aligned. Did you install them this way?
We did not, we adjusted that off-camera. In the next shot where you see the face of the cam plate, you can see the cam dots are realigned. Good catch!
Yea eactly! I said to myself..Wait a minute you never talked about realining cam marks.

Is this the same instructions for the 103 0925-1104 cam kit?
Nearly exactly the same, with the exception being that we used chain drive cams and that specific kit is for gear drive cams.
Should you not take the time to measure the crankshaft runout first?
It's definitely a good thing to check, and a requirement when you're running dear drive cams.
Probably 2 inch per rotation D T I not available E A C
Do you have part number for spacers pls?
I’d use gloves! But man a ton of information from this video! Thank you

Lot of home mechanics like the old technology keeps them turning wrench’s 🔧 plus they don’t have to deal with high technological levels.

A LOT OF GOING AHEAD
I'm an Aussie and not used to hearing that phrase, very distracting; enjoyed the video otherwise.
I would have installed gear cams if I went through all of that and sealed the cam chest up and called it a day.
Challenge is crank run out. Not all engines can tolerate gear drive cams.
I wonder how many guys upgrade to a gear driven cam kit, and discover AFTER they open the cam chest that the runout is too excessive ... or worse still, ignore the runout check and bolt in the new gear driven cams on a wobbly cranked motor.
