    Beautiful video. Not sure if you realized the large bird you were filming was a California Condor. I'm heading to Zion NP end of Sept. As a birder, if I see a condor when we are climbing Angel's Landing I could probably die right there as my life would be complete.

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  8 лет назад

      We did realize it was a California Condor. It was and remains one of the top highlights of our travels. He (Condor 299) made a number of passes over Angels Landing, at times no more than 15 ft over our heads.
      Sadly however, Condor 299 like his mate died of lead poisoning the year after we shot this footage. While there are still condors to be seen in Zion National Park 299 was a special animal who frequented the cliffs along Angels Landing more than any other condor. His story and our time watching him instantly made us greater advocates of wildlife protections.
      We wish the very best on your trip to Zion and hope you have a truly memorable condor sighting. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!!

      We'd suggest it's not as dangerous as some people say. It's of course important to be safe and only proceed if comfortable, but there's plenty of space for a safe hike to and from the summit. If your up for the mental challenge and enjoy Zion National Park then Angels Landing is definitely a must do.

      The hawk was actually a California Condor. The condor and the Mexican spotted owl toward the beginning of the video are both endangered the condor especially. They remain two of our most memorable and rare wildlife sightings.

      Same here at it took me 2-3 times more time than anyone to even do 1/4th of this hike. Just stopped at the first view point area and then came down and waited for my friend. Its been a decade since I did it, but I still feel the fear of heights when seeing this video. Gorgeous view from the top though. I wish I will have the courage and fitness level to try it out someday though in the future.

    Awesome video! i have been going to Zion since 1972, when my brother married into a family that owns Zion Ponderosa Resort east of the parki; i have property just east of the park as well; rode my bicycle through the tunnel (no can do now); drove up and down the canyon (no can do now); did the Subway; did Orderville Canyon hike into the narrows with friend and her three year old son; hiked Observation Point and Cable Mountain Trails; awesome place. Never did Angels Landing, until last year, at age 63. Holy mother of fookin' shite! Awesome; My advice; pray that the Park Service limits tour bus admissions or maybe stops them completely; the place is overrun! Stay out of Utah

    Hi again,3 more questions.
    Where abouts did you see the Mexican Spotted Owl (0:24)?
    Where were you when you saw the Californian Condor (0:45)?
    And what time of were you here?
    I would really love to see both those birds.Thanks in advance.

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  8 лет назад

      We saw the Mexican Spotted Owl in Refrigerator Canyon, which you'll almost certainly travel through on your way to Angels Landing. Spotting one of these owls takes a fair bit of luck and preferably quiet co-hikers (unfortunately uncommon on popular trails like Angels Landing).
      We saw condor 299 while hiking along the final half mile to the summit, and then again from the top of Angels Landing. We wish everyone could witness these majestic birds soaring along Zion's towering cliffs like we did when hiking Angels Landing. The experience was awe-inspiring.
      Unfortunately condor 299 died of lead poisoning shortly after we spotted him from Angels Landing. He had made it a habit to frequent those cliffs more than other condors and since his death condor sightings along Angels Landing have become drastically less common.
      We wish you the best of luck and hope you'll catch a glimpse of these two rare birds. Thanks for watching and commenting!!!

    If I go to the USA in a few years from here in the UK, I would make a point to backpack and hike rural America, and see the small towns rather than spend the trip in the big cities etc.
    I need to experience places like Yosemite, Monument Valley and Zion National Park for myself.
    The beauty of the earth is breathtaking

  • @Arendbelle
    @Arendbelle 8 лет назад

    I loved the video and thought it was shot very professionally.
    I see you already answered in the comments below you used a GoPro 3+ Black. Is this what you used to shoot the amazing film of the owl in 0:25 and the flying condor in 2:04? Also how did you achieve such a steady camera shot while walking, and the slow panning for instance at 4:43?

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  8 лет назад +1

      We used a GoPro for all the walking and panning shots. The Mexican Spotted Owl and the condor were both filmed using a Canyon SX40 HS with a long zoom.
      As for the steady footage: we used a small steady cam rig and used stabilizing software during post production. The panning time-lapse at the end of the video was achieved by affixing our GoPro to the top of an egg timer.
      Hope that was helpful! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!!!!

      @HomeInWildSpaces  5 лет назад

      We're jealous. It's been a while since we hiked Angels. To answer your question: it was a Mexican Spotted Owl. Definitely a unique sighting. We worry though. With the increasing crowds, we haven't seen as many animals in Zion. Certainly not as many on the busier trails.
      We want our fellow travelers to have the same opportunities we've had, but the noisier and more disruptive people are, the fewer unique wildlife sightings there will be.
      Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and comment. We hope to hear from you again!

  • @Tahiristan
    @Tahiristan 9 лет назад +3

    I honestly the hike itself isn't really challenging. The worst part is how crowded it was. The cliffs are scary and dizzying but as far as the hike itself goes, not too bad. Definitely an amazing thrill worth the experience with amazing views!

    Such an inspiring video, Thanks for sharing. Planning on going in November to Zion to experience fall foliage. Will be attempting Angels Landing and Narrows. Any tips or consideration to keep in mind?

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  9 лет назад

      Smitha Sathyanarayana So glad you like our video! Enjoy the fall colors, they may be a thing of the past in Zion Canyon during our lifetimes.
      As far as tips go:
      -Angels Landing is more about the mental game than anything. While physical ability is important, knowing your limits, and staying calm and focused is likely more important.
      -For the Narrows, wear quality footwear which will be ok when wet, plan for potentially cold conditions, use a sturdy hiking stick. They make a huge difference in faster water.
      -Know before you go (Weather/Trail Conditions/Flash Flood potential/Emergency Plan/etc)
      -Leave Absolutely No Trace (Pack out ALL trash, Stay on trail. Even when others don't)
      -Be courteous to fellow hikers and wildlife
      -Enjoy! Angels Landing and the Narrows are both world class, one of a kind outdoor experiences.
      Finally, we invite you to stay tuned. We hike the Narrows a few weeks ago and plan to release that and other videos in the coming months. Thanks so much for watching!!! Enjoy your trip!

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  9 лет назад

      Hungry Jewlz 1. Prepare yourself (physically/mentally/Check Weather/Research Trail)
      2. Start Early (Cooler Temperatures/Smaller Crowds)
      3. Be courteous of other hikers
      4. Leave Absolutely No Trace
      5. Be Safe (Know your limits)
      6. Enjoy every step (There is only one Angels Landing)
      Hope that is helpful. We were just there two days ago and Zion is just as beautiful as ever. Good luck! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!!

      BackpackingVideos As far as cameras go. We carry two cameras at all times, a GoPro Hero 3+ and Canon SX40-HS which doesn't have a lot of features or even optimal quality when compared to many DSLRs but it also doesn't require carrying heavy lenses and other equipment which makes a pretty big difference when you're on the move.
      Beyond that we carry a quality tripod and small steady cam rig. As far as Software goes, I edit almost exclusively in Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, and will occasionally wander into Premiere. Neither Final Cut or Premiere are particularly low priced, especially if you are considering Final Cut and do not already have an Apple computer capable of doing the work. But they get the job done and have their own pros and cons.
      I hope that is helpful. Thanks so much for watching!!! We'd love to hear your thoughts on more of our videos, especially if you think we might improve our content. Good luck!

    It appears to me that you are using a stabilizer for your shots looks awesome.

      We used a generic stabilizer for our GoPro (not suitable for slurs). As for a stabilizing for your slr. There are lots of great options out there, we couldn't refer you to any in particular. We're still trying to make a decision on which would be best for our dslr.
      Thanks for watching!!! Good luck!!!

    I wish to do that trail but Iusually stick to easy/moderate trails. Do you think it's possible if I take the time? How hard and strenuous is the first part before the last mile which is the hardest I think?

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  8 лет назад

      The first 2 miles of the Angels Landing trail are fairly steep, but not nearly as exposed as the final half mile. Generally, Angels Landing is within the reach of just about anyone who takes the time to prepare mentally and physically. But you'll be the best judge of whether or not this or any trail is "too much" for you.
      Push yourself, but remember you are responsible for your own safety. We can guarantee you, that many people have surprised themselves by reaching summits they once thought out of their reach. Enjoy yourself, whether you make it to the summit or not. And remember to be safe and please, please -- Leave No Trace. Thanks for watching!!!!

    • @WildOutdoorLiving
      @WildOutdoorLiving 8 лет назад

      The trail itself isn't all that challenging or long especially if you take your time. It is however quite dangerous if not done with care. I would certainly train up for it and then see how you feel on the 2 mile approach up to the ridge itself. If you feel completely exhausted you should turn back. The Ridge is not technically difficult but you should be as alert and in control as possible. Fatigue can impair your judgement and your coordination and as wonderful as this hike is it isn't worth adding any extra risk.

      It will be boiling hot there in August, likely around 100 degrees, as well as very crowded. You may want to go about right now, and do an early morning hike to avoid the hot temperatures and crowds. I'd suggest doing Angels Landing very early in the morning, and then The Narrows river hike if you're there later in the day when it's hot. It really helps cool you down.

  • @Saul.2910
    @Saul.2910 7 лет назад +1

    Great video! But I have to ask, when did you go?? I just did this hike last week and the crowds were terrible! Seems like you were able to mostly avoid that. The narrow ledges were much less scary than I thought but the scrambling was much tougher than I'd anticipated. This video really captures that last section of the hike well!

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  7 лет назад

      We went in mid July when we shot this video. Crowds are becoming a problem but it's still possible to avoid them with a little extra effort. Think about what days and times other people are likely to attempt popular trails and then avoid them if possible.
      Here are a couple basic rules:
      -Get out early
      -Avoid free days, holidays and even weekends if possible
      -Visit during the off season
      We've had great luck avoiding the crowds even when hiking some of the more popular trails by following these guidelines where possible.
      Thanks so much for your comment! We're so glad you enjoyed the video.

    Hi there,Great clip.I was wondering how scary this hike actually is? I'm not marvellous with heights (I wouldn't say totally terrified, but I would call it a healthy amount of self preservation). For example, how wide is the path at it's narrowest point would you say?

    • @HomeInWildSpaces
      @HomeInWildSpaces  8 лет назад +1

      How "scary" is Angels Landing, is relative, depending on the individual. What we usually tell people is that hiking Angels Landing is more mental then anything else. Generally speaking the trail is, in our opinion more than wide enough for safe passage providing the trail isn't too crowded. It's the drops on either side that get into people's minds. And they shouldn't be taken likely, but with the a few exceptions where the trail narrows to 2 feet wide or less there should be plenty of room to maneuver.
      If you are able to keep your fears/anxiety in check and you are up to the physical challenge then Angels Landing need not be very "dangerous". But as always, the most important thing is to be honest with yourself and not push yourself beyond that which is safe for you. It may be beneficial to start with some of the smaller fin hikes out there before tackling Angels Landing. Arches national park has a number of sandstone fins in the Devils Garden section which are not nearly as tall as Angels Landing, but similar in width.
      Just a thought. We hope that was helpful. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. We hope you have an amazing time in Zion. It's one of our favorite places.

    I have been wanting to do this hike. I am curious what month did you hike the trail?

    • @SuperBillstanley
      @SuperBillstanley 8 лет назад

      The summer months can get BRUTALLY hot in Zion, and I've found the best time to do this hike/climb is in the September / October period. Even then it can get quite hot in the afternoon, but if you get a really early start (like eat breakfast at 6am and start your climb around 7-7:30, the upward climb can be quite pleasant if challenging if one is not in shape, have a nice lunch at the top and rest a bit, and then start the downward journey as it's beginning to get hotter, sometimes around 90 degrees after noon. I do a workout class called Body Pump, and after I finished this hike, I felt like I had done TWO Body Pump classes back to back. But it was worth it! Go, don't regret not having done this wonderful trail.

      RUAmplified don't get me started on Arches 😂 I was eleven when I did the hike to Delicate Arch, and I found the hike there very easy. However, on a whim, my mother can I decided to hop over the railing and walk out to the arch and stand underneath it. Walking around the giant, sandstone bowl, and standing under the narrow base of the arch with 100+ foot drop scared the heck out of me. We only wore tennis shoes and it was late November 😅
