  • In this video, we're taking a look around 5 of the worst areas to live in the city of Gloucester, Gloucestershire.
We've based our findings on a combination of deprivation reports, Census data, crime statistics, and local knowledge.
Here is some data on the city of Gloucester:
"Gloucester is a historic and culturally rich city situated in the South West of England, within the county of Gloucestershire. Its history stretches back to Roman times when it was known as Glevum.
The city's strategic location near the River Severn transformed it into an essential settlement, especially during periods like the medieval era, the English Civil War, and the industrial revolution.
One of Gloucester's most iconic landmarks is the Gloucester Cathedral. Initially founded as an abbey in 678, it evolved into a cathedral by the 16th century.
Renowned for its awe-inspiring Gothic architecture, this cathedral has also graced the screen as a filming location for various films, notably the Harry Potter series.
The historic docks, once the pulse of the city's economy, have now been rejuvenated into a bustling tourist hotspot, complete with museums, shops, and eateries.
For sports enthusiasts, Kingsholm Stadium stands as a beacon, being the home ground for Gloucester Rugby, one of England's top professional rugby teams.
Economically, Gloucester has witnessed significant shifts. While the aerospace industry, with stalwarts like Dowty Rotol and Smiths Aerospace, historically anchored its economic landscape, recent times have seen sectors like services, tourism, and retail gaining momentum.
Culturally, Gloucester remains vibrant and dynamic. The city takes pride in hosting the annual Three Choirs Festival, the oldest music festival in the British Isles.
Moreover, events like the Gloucester Rhythm & Blues Festival and the Gloucester International School Jazz Festival further underscore its cultural significance.
Educationally, Gloucester is well-equipped, with the University of Gloucestershire being a prominent institution offering an array of academic courses.
In terms of connectivity, the city is well-linked. The M5 motorway ensures easy access to cities like Bristol and Birmingham, while the Gloucester Railway Station provides direct rail services to major hubs, including London and Cardiff.
Beyond the city's bustling streets, the Cotswolds, recognized as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, lie in close proximity, offering residents and visitors a picturesque escape.
In summation, Gloucester seamlessly marries its storied past with a vibrant present.
Whether one is keen on delving into its rich history, participating in its myriad cultural events, or simply soaking in the surrounding scenic beauty, Gloucester stands as a unique and lively city in England's heart."
If you live in Gloucester or any of the areas covered in this video, we'd love to hear from you!

Podsmead is meant to be the most deprived area of the city. If I were in power I’d do a mass tidy up once a month, tell people you’ll take away old mattresses, electrical items, furniture etc for free. You’d soon clear most of the fly tipping. And spend money tidying the streets and front gardens, would make hell of a difference. That’s what levelling up should be about, make people proud of where they live

As a born and bred Glawsterfarian I saw the headline, donned my armour, puffed my chest out and flexed my fingers at the ready by the keyboard to defend the realm, I know and love so well..... but, after watching, I can't say a bad word about your video. Straight facts. What I will say is, in all the areas you've mentioned, there is a good sense of community amongst the majority of inhabitants, White City, Matson & Tredworth particularly and despite the many run down shots you included of properties, there are people in all the areas who genuinely take pride in their homes and keep them looking decent....the trouble is, several neighbours of theirs don't and 'let the side down'. Imagine if streets grouped together and maintained their own areas, how that would lift the looks of these suburbs. Anyway, i've waffled on enough, subscribed and looking forward to more content. Cheers!

Another problem in identifying the boundaries of White City is that a lot of the houses aren’t white any more. Most of the worst houses were pulled down in the late 90s and the early 2000s and replaced with new red-brick homes. The area is visible from the train if you are heading south on the west coast mainline. I recall making that journey and seeing dozens of boarded up houses, then next time I went through Gloucester by rail maybe two years later the same part of the city was unrecognizable.
One notable omission from this list is western Podsmead. According to the 2019 Multiple Deprivation Index, the latest year for which figures are available, it’s the #1 most deprived area in the city and the county.

When I used to live in Coopers Edge, I'd often cut through Matson if I wanted to head towards the south side of Gloucester. Honestly, it's not that bad. Likewise the diversity on Barton street reminds me of the east end of London, just think of Upton Park and Plaistow or places like that. That being said, people would also say avoid Kingsway (back the day). Have to say though that I've had nothing but top service from the staff at Gloucester Royal. I'd have no issues recommending Gloucester over Cheltenham as a place to live.
Worst bit about Gloucester is its road infrastructure. I live in the Forest of Dean now, and trying to get into work via the A40 in a respectable time is nigh on impossible. I daresay that even the aforementioned area's house prices are creeping up.

WhiteCity was built and named after Mr. White who may have been a councillor. It was built hidden behind posher houses on Finlay Road. Southfield Road was also posher and Northfield Road more common and I think there used to be a pub and they would sit in the lounge if from Southfield and bar if from Northfield. I’m sure there’s a RUclips about it that was on TV years ago.

The amount of rubbish in the streets and on properties seems over whelming, it is one thing to look at it on the screen it is another to live there, it would drive me crazy. Ha ha I’m from Gloucester. Lived in Tredworth for 16 years. My Mum lives in Matson and I work in Barton. I know all those areas well. You could have included Coney Hill and Kingsway but I guess 5 areas is enough. I moved to Stroud. A hippy dippy place but because of the station again some down and outs get here. Many large shops have or are closing here but the shopping centre was recently revamped.

@@ukexplored @sarahwasheree Kingsway's crime rate is way below that of these areas so definitely not in the same bracket. 2022 was 97.7 compared to Coney Hill which is 183.2. It's the 7th lowest crime rate in Gloucester for 2022, and the 9th overall if you average the yearly rate since 2007 against all Gloucester areas including those outside the City boundary like Churchdown, Brockworth, Hardwicke etc. Coney Hill is 21st out of 25 with the worst being Westgate, Barton & Tredworth, Podsmead and Kingsholm & Wotton.
Abbeymead has the lowest average rate and also the lowest rate last year, with Churchdown Brookfield and Quedgeley Severnvale just behind it.

I don't know, but White City looks sweet. They need a assigned trash place which is free, they have potential. I guess they could find one or two people who would set up something by the community to care for it, if the government would invest in this place. It was like a refreshing, lovely scene after all of the footage of the neighboring towns.
