    Clarification 1: Explore actions will not generate Explorers if there aren't any *towns or cities* or *oceans* adjacent to the space, not just "invaders." If there are only explorers adjacent or in the land, they will not generate new Explorers.
    Clarification 2: You did not discuss "Time Passes," during which all cards put into play during the turn are put into personal discard piles, and all damage to pieces heal; Dahan and Towns/Cities restore to full health.
    Clarification 3: You misspoke, saying that the Beast is placed in the "highest numbered space without printed icons," but that's actually "lowest."

    A point about the intro:
    I wholeheartedly agree that as board gamers we need to appreciate the implications of the games we play.
    The latent colonialism present in many games and the objectivation of native inhabitants that comes with it is something that becomes more and more of a deal breaker for me. Games like Puerto Rico, where you play a plantation owner or Maracaibo come to mind.
    However, Klaus Teuber's original inspiration for Catan was Iceland during the early Viking age when there were no human inhabitants present on the island. Sure, maybe Iceland didn't want to be settled aswell and the Icelandic earth can be very jagged ... if you catch my drift. I just feel like Catan is at least not one of the worst offenders when it comes to problematic themes in games.
    Due to its popularity and overall themes and mechanics, it still made the perfect example for this great intro -- which I have used myself on various occasions. Thanks Shae!

      @@RTFM Especially since Spirit Island is not an easy game to teach to newbies! Do you think it's too much of a gamer's game to teach non-gamers to play? I personally love co-ops as intro games usually - and I adore how Spirit Island gets around the co-op alpha gamer problem with such highly thematic asymmetry combined with deep complexity! - but I've always balked at pulling SI out when playing with casual boardgamers. What do you think? Am I being too cautious? Is it just a matter of assigning the right spirits or dropping the difficulty, etc.?

    • @RTFM
      @RTFM  5 лет назад

      @@MoriMemento117 I don't think it's a great choice for people who are completely new to the hobby, though if they have some experience, it shouldn't be too bad. And if your friends are really on board for the theme of it, that'll help propel them through the complexity. Also, when teaching the game, I always make sure to give them a low complexity spirit. I'll often take one myself, just to keep things as simple as possible.

      No, you need to play the card in order to get the elements from it.

    10:00 confused me, I thought the invaders would attack the dahan first, and not the land. So in that showen szenario they would have destroyed a dahan, an one dahan would have been put upside down. The dahan would attack back and destroy both (the invader and the town). The land wouldn't have been attacked so no presence would have been removed from the board.

    • @RTFM
      @RTFM  4 года назад +2

      Invaders attack the land and the Dahan simultaneously, and their damage is applied to both.

    Clarity please for ravage step. Only defend blocks damage on the land? Do the Dahan prevent damage to the land by invaders by absorbing it themselves? Or do the not and a subsequent effect of damage to the land is Dahan also perish if it goes through?
    Basically, is defend the only way to block damage to the land, or can the Dahan block it too?

    • @RTFM
      @RTFM  2 года назад

      The Dahan do not block damage to the land. When damage is dealt in a land with Dahan, it affects both them and the land. Generally yes, the only way to prevent damage is by using defend.

    • @RTFM
      @RTFM  4 года назад +1

      When you gather, you target the space where you want adjacent dahan (or whatever) to go, so in this example, we only need presence in the target space. Having presence in the adjacent locations isn't necessary.

      I feel like TI4 is a better designed game, but I've played so much more Spirit Island that I definitely think that one has the better value. But they're both great, so as long as you can get them to the table, there's no wrong answer.

    • @burghman81
      @burghman81 4 года назад +1

      It's also worth noting that player count matters (or may for you). Spirit Island can be played solo on up. TI4 is my favorite game of all time, but it also requires at least 4 players to play, and IMO really only shines with 6.

    I cringed every time you called scared sites, spiritual sites. Elsewise, pretty good video! It's worth noting invaders deal damage to the dahan and land much like how you gain elements. Damage isn't allocated, it's simultaneous.

    • @RTFM
      @RTFM  6 лет назад +1

      Regarding sacred sites, I guess that's one of those things that I flipped in my head when I first learned the game and just never reexamined. Sorry for the cringing. I know about the simultaneous damage. I guess it's not explicitly stated, but I'm hoping the examples show that clearly enough. There hasn't seemed to have been much confusion on that part so far. Thanks for watching!

      You might be miss interpreting a rule or two making the game harder then it is.
      It does take a couple games to get used to it. Eventually everything just clicks.
      Small tip, focus on growing your spirit as much as possible while keeping some control on your island. Try to focus on preventing builds since it will solve problems for 2 turns. Allowing a couple blights at the beginning is fine, you can't stop them all.

    • @Army1SGRetired

      @@Daedwind we got into a rhythm after a few rounds and got a couple wins. I agree, growing your spirit quickly makes a big difference. Timing and planning the slow powers is also critical.
