Thunderspeaker for me; I just love the interaction and puzzle of utilising the Dahaan the best....and creating war parties storming in and doing a ton of damage :) Would love more content and spirit guides to see how you play - particularly the new Jagged Earth Spirits.
Keeper of the Forbidden Wilds. Smash them out. Also yes, 9 energy/turn. Thank you. Little hard to value Jagged Earth spirits right now. I've seen them all in play a few times, but I'm not ready to call any of them within my favorites. Lure of the Deep Wilderness and Downpour Drenches the World sure are fighting for the top spots in my heart. I also really want Volcano Looming High to be working, but I can't make him do anything without Finder of Paths Unseen.
Have only the base set plus promos so far. And also not even seen much more of the new stuff yet. As an orientation, I like challenge, “well balanced” spirits and theme. And I mostly play solo / one-handed. So here are my top three from those sets: 1. Ocean - yeah, theme is awesome here. It also changes the dynamic of the game tremendously. You feel powerful and sometimes yet helpless. And it’s harder to win with. Excellent design! 2. Earth - not the most balanced, unfortunately somewhat luck based (if you go there major powers route), especially on higher levels (I think I’m intermediate, so maybe I’m wrong here). But again, I love that slowly growing power that protects the island and builds forces with the natives. 3. Really hard here. I also love BoDaN, but it’s not on three - at least not solo! Because it changes the game so much - even more than Ocean. I assume it’s awesome in a larger group. I think on three is Thunderspeaker. She is excellent as she really teaches you to pace slow and fast actions, to look for the right elements, to learn when to retreat and when to be aggressive. She is a blast and probably the strongest of all base characters - at least early game. What I don’t like much: Serpent: Too slow Green: Just boring Flicker: Yeah, boring. BoDaN has the much better design. River and Lightning are both good, well rounded but quite straight forward. Perfect beginner spirits! What I yet need to learn better: Wildfire. I think you’re right on this one. And you made me feel like I want to play this more often. And: Your content is amazing. Keep it coming!

Bit late to the party, but my favorite spirit hands down is Lure of the Deep Wilderness. It's incredibly powerful, and I have a blast filling my spaces with obscene amounts of tokens for making explorers disappear!
I bought Spirit Island in part because of your enthusiasm with the game. Hope you guys could upload videos again and continue this channel! I love the channel’s philosophy on board games. Playing w my friends is definitely why I got into the hobby
I got Spirit Island and Branch & Claw for Christmas last year. In the year since I've played dozens of games, but never really settled on a "favorite" spirit. I liked all of them and never played the same one two games in a row. This Christmas, I got Jagged Earth. In the two short weeks since, I can say with complete certainty that my _favorite_ spirit is Starlight Seeks its Form. After my first game as Starlight, I immediately set up another game to try a new build strategy. After that game, I played another one. Then another. And another. The sheer variety of strategic choices and potential end-states for Starlight is practically limitless, making it highly adaptable to any situation the game may throw out. All of the spirits have been fun for me, but only Starlight has ever been... _addictive._ Also, an honorable mention for Fractured Days Split the Sky. I've only played one solo game and one three-player game with it so far, but that multiplayer game was enough to make me love this spirit. Some folks are turned off by the idea of a "support spirit", but with all the ways it literally breaks the core mechanics, this support is more like a _god_ than a spirit.
I also love these 3 spirits: some of the spirits not only play well, but have more of a sense of presence, almost like you're role playing. Ocean feels so ancient and cruel compared with more kindly, humane spirits like Thunderspeaker and River, and I really get into that. For me the other spirits from the base game and Feather and Flame (i.e. before the game totally transforms with Jagged Earth) that have a similar roleplay quality are: - River, especially with the 'Carry the Dahan' aspect, which has you creating a river across the island: cool! - Serpent: that whole slow growth, useless early, then awakening thing is really fun I find, it really has the feel of something powerful slumbering then awakening. The rest are all good, and have a nice 'feel', but those 2, plus the 3 we mutually like, are more distinctive, for me anyway. I do like the idea of more Spirit Island content but quite a few people have done a 'spirit by spirit' thing now. It would be good if you could come up with a different approach: adversaries, perhaps?
No love for Thunderspeaker? My favorite by far. I do love some of the new Jagged Earth spirits though. If you like these spirits that turn an aspect of the game on its head, you're gonna have fun with the expansion. So many of the new ones feel totally unique.
I think thunderspeaker is my number 4 favorite😆 or maybe its sharp fangs, or keeper of the wilds... or lightning... there are too many good ones! yeah im beyond excited for jagged earth 😍
I just got my copy of the base game, and Thunderspeaker is my favorite so far (haven't tried high difficulty level though). But Thunderspeaker seems really versatile & a bit of a fast action / Minor Power specialist, which seems to be a useful thing to have on the team

My top three spirits. 3. (Probably) Heart of the Wildfire 🔥 2. Volcano Looming High 🌋 1. Ocean's Hungry Grasp 🌊 1st spirit I ever played was ocean and I've lived him ever since. I also love ocean and nightmare combo. I also love playing with Spread of Rampant Green.
1st spirit being ocean is actually pretty wild, since its a high complexity spirit!! Though I do feel like oceans easier than alot of other high complexity spirits, as their mission is fairly simple! And yep, ocean bringer is fantastic.
Would love to see more Spirit Island content. I just got the game, haven't even played my first round, but its super interesting to me. I would really enjoy per spirit guide (you might get some guidance or useful information looking at guides for Heroes for League of Legends, just an idea). What I think would be especially helpful is doing it in stages. For instance, going over the overall gameplan, what the powers and effects you have at your disposal, and then the high level strats, whatever they may be. I say that because I know that I would specifically be interested in hearing the overview elements and the overall gameplan, but wouldn't want to get into the high level complicated stuff until I've had a couple goes at the spirit to try and learn some things myself. It would be especially useful to ensure that I'm mechanically playing the character correctly. Just an idea. Thanks for the content!

Being Friends First, I know you know this, but your production value is super high, so I say keep it up 😁😁😁!!! If you were going to go through all of the spirits I’d start with Shadows or River. Such great flavor, still low complexity, but there’s definitely a strategy with them. That would be my suggestion.
Awesome video! I just started playing spirit island and I really love it. Solo gaming was something that never convinced me, because the company of friends and nice people was what I enjoyed most. This game changed that, and it's the first game I will sit down for and play solo. The content in this video is exactly what I'm searching for, thanks! Your idea of making a spirit guide for all the spirits is fantastic, I would love to see them coming.

@@BeingFriends You didn't ask me, but Marvel Champions is one of those games that should be much quicker solo, these longer, more complicated co-op games really make a good case for solo!!!
I like all three of them, but they aren't my favorites. My top spirit now is Keeper of the Forbidden Wilds. My second would be A Spread of Rampant Green, followed by Lightning's Swift Strike. I just love how easily LSS can smack a town down on the first turn. Taking out the town on a standard board shifts the balance of power and loss so quickly. My problem with Ocean's Hungry Grasp os the limited reach. It's one thing to have a weakness, but to be barred completely from the inland is harsh. The only way you can dig invaders out of the inland is if you get lucky with range boost cards. I play a fair bit of solo Spirit Island and if you are the only spirit, Ocean is tough. I really enjoy Heart of the Wildfire but causing blight so early and not being able to get rid of it reliably is troublesome. You have to be prepared to accept some blight, but causing more blight every turn is a hard sell. I've left the game at the end with 0 blight on an island, playing other spirits. ' m usually close to causing a Blight Card with HoTW by the end of the game. I've enjoyed Bringer of Dreams and Nightmares each time I've played them. I recently played in a game where one of my friends was palying them too. Every time they are in the game, it ends up being a Fear based victory. I'm still new enough to Spirit Island that I've never seen a Terror Level 4 victory. I can see that BoD&N would be the likely source of that, if we ever do get one. There are few spirits I dislike, but if I had to pick oneas my least favoite, it would be Vengeeance as a Burning Plague. I really didn't like that one. It's pretty closely tied with Serpent Slumbering beneath the Island.

Evan can I ask, what are your thoughts on branch & claw? Im tempted to get it for more content but concerned about losing the deterministic nature of the game which I love so much (with events)
heeeck yeah!! great choice lol. I personally LOVE branch and claw! I am a huge fan of the event cards and all the new tokens/abilities. It definitely adds some unpredictability, but often you are still given choices with each event card! It also adds a good amount of playtime to the game. But along with that lack of control, the tokens, like disease and beasts, give you alot more control, so utilizing them well balances it out in my opinion! I think It's worth a shot! I enjoy both of the new spirits quite a bit too!
I am playing it mainly solo, are those three also good for solo mode? It seems to me as some spirits are really bad for solo, but I’m still very new to this game,…

We are still really new at the game, so would love to see move content, especially good spirit combo's as we typically play two spirit games. Also play it solo quite but only single spirit, still a bit much to take on dual handed (or more) solo game of SI.. Hmmm.... what's the favorite solo spirit?

Thunderspeaker. I recently won a game in fear level 1 with thunderspeaker on a two player team. Something so satisfying about leading an army of Dahan. And I almost never need to take major powers. But like you mentioned, all are great.
geeeez I love winning on terror 1 or 2. Usually its 3! the other day I won with bringer, ocean, keeper on terror level 2 which was wild. You'd think that woulda been a fear victory!! But I played Bringer weird and heavily used majors really early on! Thunderspeaker doesn't need majors as much cause she literally essentially starts with a major!!
I was thinking when you were going over your top 2 Spirits that they would combo really well... and then you said how you like them as a combo. I have not played with Ocean's Hungry Grasp yet, but plan on doing it in my first 3 player game on Friday (have done 3 duo playthroughs and 4 solo plays so far).

Im excited to play Ocean Spirit. Knowing how terrifying, vast, powerful and breathtaking the ocean actually is, and seeing the theme of this spirit👁…so cool how powerful it is even tho it has coastal restrictions. Gathering and pushing to the coast is great. Haven’t played the game but just got it and may play Ocean or Earth in my 1st game. I like how land is often explored in coastal regions and the ocean can just suck them up. Potential is my sh**

Do you tend to advance your card or presence track more with ocean? Im forgetting if you said so I’m this video but for solo I imagine advancing card track is better…when is advancing presence track better in ocean?

This is perfect because I just started playing myself. I still have so much to learn, but I've got the basic idea and mechanics. Now with this video, I can get to know each of the Spirits and have a better idea of how they will play out. :)
@@BeingFriends I'm starting with the low complexity ones so Lightening Swift Strike was my first and I won that game. Shadows Flicker Like Flame was second, and I won that game too. Both games were won when I hit Terror Level II. My last couple of games were with River Surges in Sunlight and this time I didn't use the Power Progression deck. I lost that game. I have a sneaking suspicion I'm not doing everything quite right. The first two were too easy, but I did use the Power Progression deck. No favorites yet. Would you consider a Live Q & A of Spirit Island? That would be amazing.

My wife and I got Spirit Island this weekend, and have already played it several times. We're both hooked. I really like Thunderspeaker, and she likes Shadows Flicker Like Flame. I've definitely been tempted by the Ocean but wasn't sure how effective it would be in a 2 player game.
I'm playing Spirit Island just since a few weeks (I decided to try it after watching a video from you where you recommended it) and I tried Ocean for the first time this week. After I figured out how that spirit works, I like that spirit a lot too. I do see I often cannot use the power of drowning towns, because either I don't have enough presence on the coast or maybe I used the card "Call of the deeps" a lot to prevent as much builds as possible. Or maybe I'm reclaiming my cards too often. I haven't played with the two other spirits yet that you favored. I think my other two favorites as of now are "Vital strength of the Earth" and "Shadows flicker like flame". But I have only tried 6 spirits so far. The four low complex ones + Ocean + "A spread of rampant green".
I like the easy ones. In the base game I think there are two. We are not advanced players, and our games were probably about a year ago, so it is inconceivable we would play with the other spirits without an easy one alongside them! If you could cover spirits in order of difficulty, that would help those of us who baulk at the thought of a sound thrashing!!!
There are 4 in the base game: River Surges in Sunlight, Lightning's Swift Strike, Vital Strength of the Earth, and Shadows Flicker Like Flame. Though there's supposed to be 5 new Spirits (all low complexity), in an expansion coming out next month.
VIDEO SPOILER AHEAD: I would think that River Surges in Sunlight would be the go-to partner for your Ocean, with its ability to push lots of explorers and towns down to the coast where Ocean can gobble them up. This should work especially well since Ocean can place presence in the ocean of River's starting board, putting them in range of each other very early on. Has anyone out there tried this?
Any spirit that is focused around moving things around synergizes well with Ocean's Hungry Grasp. Either to bring things within range so the Ocean's player can interact with them, or just shove them in the ocean to automatically drown them.
starlight is one of 3 i have yet to play, but i’m dang excited. Starlight is most likely the most flexible spirit in the game and probably can be useful on any team!!
@@BeingFriends and is so strong!! Draft major power on turn 1 to form a game plan - draft 2 more minors on turn 1 that match the major's elements. Then you're still getting a card per turn so reclaiming isn't necessary for a while, allowing you to plan some lethal sets of cards combined with innates

My favorite one is Vulcano-looming-high for sure! I dont know why it is but it is just so much fun to play and it has such a different design.

Solid three spirits. I throughly enjoy playing Shroud of Silent Mist. Preventing Invaders from healing and slowly moving my presence around each turn.

I just got my copy of the base game, and Thunderspeaker is my favorite so far (haven't tried high difficulty level though). But Thunderspeaker seems really versatile & a bit of a fast action / Minor Power specialist, which seems to be a useful thing to have on the team

1st spirit I ever played was ocean and I've lived him ever since. I also love ocean and nightmare combo.
I also love playing with Spread of Rampant Green.
1st spirit being ocean is actually pretty wild, since its a high complexity spirit!! Though I do feel like oceans easier than alot of other high complexity spirits, as their mission is fairly simple! And yep, ocean bringer is fantastic.
I really have a soft spot for Sharp Fangs. I am still working my way through the Jagged Earth spirits and have enjoyed them all so far.

Would love to see more Spirit Island content. I just got the game, haven't even played my first round, but its super interesting to me. I would really enjoy per spirit guide (you might get some guidance or useful information looking at guides for Heroes for League of Legends, just an idea). What I think would be especially helpful is doing it in stages. For instance, going over the overall gameplan, what the powers and effects you have at your disposal, and then the high level strats, whatever they may be. I say that because I know that I would specifically be interested in hearing the overview elements and the overall gameplan, but wouldn't want to get into the high level complicated stuff until I've had a couple goes at the spirit to try and learn some things myself. It would be especially useful to ensure that I'm mechanically playing the character correctly. Just an idea. Thanks for the content!
Heck yeah well i’m stoked to make more:) Yes LoL hero guides are pretty dang close to what i’m thinking about doing for them. I need to hunker down snd start writing them, that way i can just sit down, make one, and be ready for the next instead of having to write them one at a time!!

If you were going to go through all of the spirits I’d start with Shadows or River. Such great flavor, still low complexity, but there’s definitely a strategy with them. That would be my suggestion.

Awesome video! I just started playing spirit island and I really love it. Solo gaming was something that never convinced me, because the company of friends and nice people was what I enjoyed most. This game changed that, and it's the first game I will sit down for and play solo.

@@BeingFriends You didn't ask me, but Marvel Champions is one of those games that should be much quicker solo, these longer, more complicated co-op games really make a good case for solo!!!
I like all three of them, but they aren't my favorites. My top spirit now is Keeper of the Forbidden Wilds. My second would be A Spread of Rampant Green, followed by Lightning's Swift Strike. I just love how easily LSS can smack a town down on the first turn. Taking out the town on a standard board shifts the balance of power and loss so quickly.
My problem with Ocean's Hungry Grasp os the limited reach. It's one thing to have a weakness, but to be barred completely from the inland is harsh. The only way you can dig invaders out of the inland is if you get lucky with range boost cards. I play a fair bit of solo Spirit Island and if you are the only spirit, Ocean is tough.
I really enjoy Heart of the Wildfire but causing blight so early and not being able to get rid of it reliably is troublesome. You have to be prepared to accept some blight, but causing more blight every turn is a hard sell. I've left the game at the end with 0 blight on an island, playing other spirits. ' m usually close to causing a Blight Card with HoTW by the end of the game.
I've enjoyed Bringer of Dreams and Nightmares each time I've played them. I recently played in a game where one of my friends was palying them too. Every time they are in the game, it ends up being a Fear based victory. I'm still new enough to Spirit Island that I've never seen a Terror Level 4 victory. I can see that BoD&N would be the likely source of that, if we ever do get one.
There are few spirits I dislike, but if I had to pick oneas my least favoite, it would be Vengeeance as a Burning Plague. I really didn't like that one. It's pretty closely tied with Serpent Slumbering beneath the Island.
I'm seeing a theme of destruction and fear.

heeeck yeah!! great choice lol. I personally LOVE branch and claw! I am a huge fan of the event cards and all the new tokens/abilities. It definitely adds some unpredictability, but often you are still given choices with each event card! It also adds a good amount of playtime to the game. But along with that lack of control, the tokens, like disease and beasts, give you alot more control, so utilizing them well balances it out in my opinion! I think It's worth a shot! I enjoy both of the new spirits quite a bit too!

Enjoyed the video! I purchased Spirit Island based on your recommendation, and it hasn't let us down. We are still really new at the game, so would love to see move content, especially good spirit combo's as we typically play two spirit games. Also play it solo quite but only single spirit, still a bit much to take on dual handed (or more) solo game of SI.. Hmmm.... what's the favorite solo spirit?

my favorite solo spirit is probably bringer! with the fear pool being at 4 fear, its just so fun to rush that fear deck 😆
Thunderspeaker. I recently won a game in fear level 1 with thunderspeaker on a two player team.
Something so satisfying about leading an army of Dahan. And I almost never need to take major powers.
But like you mentioned, all are great.
geeeez I love winning on terror 1 or 2. Usually its 3! the other day I won with bringer, ocean, keeper on terror level 2 which was wild. You'd think that woulda been a fear victory!! But I played Bringer weird and heavily used majors really early on!
Thunderspeaker doesn't need majors as much cause she literally essentially starts with a major!!
I was thinking when you were going over your top 2 Spirits that they would combo really well... and then you said how you like them as a combo. I have not played with Ocean's Hungry Grasp yet, but plan on doing it in my first 3 player game on Friday (have done 3 duo playthroughs and 4 solo plays so far).
I keep coming back to see if more Spirit Island content has been posted. I’m hoping it’s still in the future plans!

Im excited to play Ocean Spirit. Knowing how terrifying, vast, powerful and breathtaking the ocean actually is, and seeing the theme of this spirit👁…so cool how powerful it is even tho it has coastal restrictions. Gathering and pushing to the coast is great. Haven’t played the game but just got it and may play Ocean or Earth in my 1st game. I like how land is often explored in coastal regions and the ocean can just suck them up. Potential is my sh**

@@BeingFriends I played yesterday 1st game with Ocean on easiest mode and won. Played with my brothers who used Lightning and Earth. Do you tend to advance your card or presence track more with ocean? Im forgetting if you said so I’m this video but for solo I imagine advancing card track is better…when is advancing presence track better in ocean?

This is perfect because I just started playing myself. I still have so much to learn, but I've got the basic idea and mechanics. Now with this video, I can get to know each of the Spirits and have a better idea of how they will play out. :)

@@BeingFriends I'm starting with the low complexity ones so Lightening Swift Strike was my first and I won that game. Shadows Flicker Like Flame was second, and I won that game too. Both games were won when I hit Terror Level II. My last couple of games were with River Surges in Sunlight and this time I didn't use the Power Progression deck. I lost that game. I have a sneaking suspicion I'm not doing everything quite right. The first two were too easy, but I did use the Power Progression deck. No favorites yet. Would you consider a Live Q & A of Spirit Island? That would be amazing.

My wife and I got Spirit Island this weekend, and have already played it several times. We're both hooked. I really like Thunderspeaker, and she likes Shadows Flicker Like Flame.
I've definitely been tempted by the Ocean but wasn't sure how effective it would be in a 2 player game.
I'm playing Spirit Island just since a few weeks (I decided to try it after watching a video from you where you recommended it) and I tried Ocean for the first time this week. After I figured out how that spirit works, I like that spirit a lot too. I do see I often cannot use the power of drowning towns, because either I don't have enough presence on the coast or maybe I used the card "Call of the deeps" a lot to prevent as much builds as possible. Or maybe I'm reclaiming my cards too often. I haven't played with the two other spirits yet that you favored. I think my other two favorites as of now are "Vital strength of the Earth" and "Shadows flicker like flame". But I have only tried 6 spirits so far. The four low complex ones + Ocean + "A spread of rampant green".
What type of sleeves do you use for each size?
I like the easy ones. In the base game I think there are two. We are not advanced players, and our games were probably about a year ago, so it is inconceivable we would play with the other spirits without an easy one alongside them!
If you could cover spirits in order of difficulty, that would help those of us who baulk at the thought of a sound thrashing!!!
There are 4 in the base game: River Surges in Sunlight, Lightning's Swift Strike, Vital Strength of the Earth, and Shadows Flicker Like Flame.
Though there's supposed to be 5 new Spirits (all low complexity), in an expansion coming out next month.

I would think that River Surges in Sunlight would be the go-to partner for your Ocean, with its ability to push lots of explorers and towns down to the coast where Ocean can gobble them up. This should work especially well since Ocean can place presence in the ocean of River's starting board, putting them in range of each other very early on. Has anyone out there tried this?
Any spirit that is focused around moving things around synergizes well with Ocean's Hungry Grasp. Either to bring things within range so the Ocean's player can interact with them, or just shove them in the ocean to automatically drown them.

Starlight Seeks its Form
starlight is one of 3 i have yet to play, but i’m dang excited. Starlight is most likely the most flexible spirit in the game and probably can be useful on any team!!
@@BeingFriends and is so strong!! Draft major power on turn 1 to form a game plan - draft 2 more minors on turn 1 that match the major's elements. Then you're still getting a card per turn so reclaiming isn't necessary for a while, allowing you to plan some lethal sets of cards combined with innates
