    For many years now, the king of sub £3,000 diving watches has always been the Tudor Black Bay. Others have come close, but the unavoidable desirability, fantastic execution of a clean aesthetic and its impressive quality has meant that Tudor has dominated for years.
    But now a darling of the diving watch world has recently received quite the upgrade, challenging the reigning king in a huge way.
    Oris Aquis Diver - why now?
    So why have we waited until now to put Oris Aquis against the Tudor Black Bay? Well the most obvious reason is the increase in price tag for the Aquis as it's now £2,700 vs the Black Bay 41 which is £2,840. This reflects a £1,100 price increase on the previous Aquis models. The reason? The Oris is now powered by the house Calibre 400 movement which boasts some seriously impressive stats.
    To be honest this isn’t the first time we’ve thought of making the Aquis vs Black Bay comparison. However previously with such core differences as price point and the movements used, the outcome was always going to be rooted in financial logic. But now things are different. Oris is now commanding Tudor levels of dosh which begs the question:
    Has the underdog just become the top dog?
    The defending champion - tudor
    Let's start with the one many of us are aware of and know its strengths, the Tudor Black Bay. This release from Tudor marked a huge turning point for the brand as it offered the desirable looks previously only found with vintage diving watch, in an obtainable and presentable modern package. Dimensions are universally appealing at 41mm wide, 14.8mm thick and a lug width of 22mm.
    This version of the Black Bay comes with the MT 56 02 COSC movement which provides 70 hours of power reserve, vibrating at 28,800 vph with a silicone balance spring. A welcomed as significant movement upgrade when compared to other standard Swiss options. Tudor was first created to be the sister brand to Rolex and even today releases from each manufacturer cross pollinate. It’s impossible to put a value on this connection Tudor has, but that shared DNA is huge for Tudor and arguably is one of the reasons why it holds the number 1 spot.
    So what are some of the positives and negatives on the Tudor Black Bay 41?
    Well, one aspect that is consistent throughout all of the Black Bay range is balance, in every sense of the word. From styling, to price point, brand awareness and quality you really do get a little bit of everything here.
    The details and construction on this watch are fantastic. No clumsy date windows, no unnecessary modernisation, just exactly what people are looking for with no compromise. The movement is tough and continues to tick for over double a standard automatic movement. The bezel remains one of the easiest and most enjoyable to use.
    The standard 22mm lugs on this watch also mean you have a huge amount of options when it comes to changing the look up with a new strap. Be sure to head over to the site to see some strap suggestions for the Black Bay.
    Possibly Tudor’s biggest positive is it’s connection to Rolex. That assumed value it brings means it's incredibly hard not to default to picking up a Black Bay.
    But the watch is not without its faults though. Specifically the 14.8mm thickness comes to mind as it most certainly doesn't go unnoticed on the wrist. If we’re being totally honest as well, you could make a case for the dial of the watch being a little plain and safe.
    The amount of praise it has received over the years has resulted in them flooding the market. Chances are if you’re catching the tube in London, you wont be more than a few metres away from another Black Bay owner.
    Yes, the Tudor Black Bay with its desirably history, fantastic execution and solid movement makes it a deserving champion. Three years later, it is still clear as day as to why this is the top pick for sub £3,000 diving watches.

    I understand you've compared the Aquis with the larger Black Bay as they are similar in size but I think it should have been against the BB58 and that would win hands down. The value retention, link to Rolex, the size, movement and styling just make the BB58 a clear stand out winner. The Aquis's appeal is little more limited and too blingy for some whereas the BB58 can be worn in a lot more environments. I think Oris still has some way to go before it can steal Tudors crown but it will do so in small steps and the new 400 calibre is just one small step.

      Yes, I agree having owned both. The BB never quite worked for me, I found it sterile and the bracelet with the rivets was horrible. The Oris bracelets and the lugs, though initially strange to the unfamiliar eye, are so comfortable they disappear and the watch is impeccable.. My 40mm Oris has been to 35m depth diving in the Pacific, Med and South Atlantic as well up as up more than few seriously rugged mountains including mt Blanc twice. Going great, never misses a beat. No regrets at all moving on the BB58

    I've owned the Aquis, 43 mm grey version on bracelet with SW-200 movement. I currently own a Tudor BB 41 mm black. Allthough the Tudor movement is way superior I have to say the build quality and overall "stamina" over the years is better. My Aquis is 8 years old with almost everyday wear and you can hardly see any marks or fade of colour.
    I like the Tudor better because of performance and looks but the Aquis is far better build IMO.

  • @Sirkelsag666

    Oris over Tudor for me. In my opinion the Oris is a more interesting watch. The Tudor seems a little redundant to me. Of course great movement and great build but still. "Everyone" has one and that puts me off quite a bit. After I bought myself a Breitling Avenger I really have gotten my eyes open to a little bigger and "blingyer" watches. I also tried on a Tudor BB 41 mm, didn't like the fit on my wrist, it felt very top heavy and the proportions just seemed a bit off. Great watch no doubt, just not for me.

  • @actc6077
    @actc6077 3 года назад +9

    "With the April sale of Breitling to CVC Capital Partners, and with most big Swiss watch brands currently owned by larger luxury groups, the population of truly independent Swiss watch brands is near non-existent. Yet Oris has been able to retain its independent, family-run status throughout almost all of its entire 113-year history of making mechanical tool watches."
    Oris rich history and loyalty to its quality before quantity is a big plus for me, from a philosophical perspective it should be one of the most respected and loved watch brand out there, especially for a real watch enthusiast. I get more impressed seeing people wearing Oris then a Tudor or a Rolex. A Oris feels like more culture. But its just in my opinion,
    thank you for sharing.

    Massive marketing increases the prices / stories of watches - Oris does not make much use of marketing, Tudor makes massive use of this. Oris is the true story of a watch brand that dares to go its own way. A brand that has struggled throughout history - always insisting on making only mechanical watches. Bought themselves out of swatch gruop - because they wanted a different story of Oris (they wanted them to make quartz watches - or die). Oris wanted something else - they insisted on making only mechanical watches - which opened the market to Japan. Japan wanted mechanical watches from switzerland in the 80s - Oris had huge success in Japan, which in turn set in motion mechanical watches from switzerland. All the big ones bent their necks and thought they were going to make quartz watches ??? Oris was far-sighted and probably actually helped to prepare the watch industry in Switzerland. Oris has his finger on the pulse and listens to their customers - they want their customers! Marketing tell a story about what you want a brand to express - history you have to look for. One has to make an effort to understand what DNA is in a watch brand. Get to know Oris - and you will understand their values and why Oris should really cost more. Oris makes real watches for real people :-)

    Honestly still like the BB58 more. The movement in my opinion is much better. The new Oris movement has the issue of skipping about a minute if you press the crown in after you set it and the movement doesn't seem to have a free sprung balance. Tudor has that free sprung balance along with Cosc certification thats basically has much better tolerances in terms of time keeping than the Oris. Love the look on both and I def think the Oris looks alot more updated and newer than the tudor. I guess it depends on which look you like more or if you value a 5 day power reserve that much.

    • @milaweitz
      @milaweitz Год назад +1

      Just FYI. as COSC normally operate within −4/+6 sec. The Oris Aquis cal.400 which is not officially COSC certified perform a deviation of less than a second per day over five days. That’s pretty stunning.

    • @Justsomeguy1015
      @Justsomeguy1015 Год назад

      @@milaweitz yeah but that varies Watch to watch. Some aren’t regulated as well as some other oris watches. That’s why COSC is there for QC. Not to mention they are tested in different positions as well as temperature. I think cosc watches are great to have for ppl that actually uses their tool watches as it is intended.

    As someone who is seriously looking into buying one of these two watches. The main reasons I shy away from the new Aquis are firstly the lack of freedom to put whatever strap I care to put on one.
    The thickness of the Oris being 13.8mm in comparison with the 11.5mm of the Black Bay. Also I'm not at all happy with the current situation vi's a vie the jumping second hand when trying to synchronise the watch after hacking.
    In fact I'm quite surprised that Oris would release a new movement with such a "quirk" in it. A "quirk" that will no doubt be viewed by any other possible buyer should I wish to sell it later on down the line as a defect. Add to this the heritage and brand recognition advantage of the Tudor ( albeit a tad by proxy to its elder brother Rolex).
    The potential value retention of the Black Bay which far outweighs that of the Oris.
    In addition to the above what with the recent - ish release of the Black Bay 58 Blue and you can appreciate the task of choosing has got that much more difficult. I'm also looking at Omega and their various offerings in the Seamaster, Railmaster, Aqua Terra and Speedmaster ranges. Obviously I'm going to have to have a bit of a rethink with reguard to increasing my watch buying budget... Many thanks for the video anyway even if I did find it at times a little confusing... I really like the oris but Its still a oris and think I would go for the regular date which you can get at around €1300.
    If you go at the 3k level, Tudor just had more value I believe even though I think the oris looks way better and arguably has a better movement.
    I think a good comparison for the oris is the breitling superocean heritage II. They both have this shiny, bit blingy diver look.
    Grey market you pay around €2300 for the oris and €3000 for the breitling, I would probably go for the breitling, hence that’s why I would go for the normal Aquis date.

    The big thing is that $1,100 uptick in price for the Oris. That really takes it away from a value prop no doesn’t it? Adding a thousand dollar movement really doesn’t make it that much better if a watch. The Oris lived in that $1200 range and dominated it, but I think they were getting. Tired of being compared to Hamilton and Christopher Ward and wanted the push farther up. The Aquis is also a modern diver with a really dated look. Like the 70’s Omega quartz watches. Dated and not good looking at all. Oris trying to catch up to Tudor and it’s cute, while Tudor doesn’t have to do anything but put out the BB in a different color and it will sell tons more than the Oris.
    The Oris is just an ok watch, and is not worth the 1100 up charge. I’d get an older one, with the off the shelf movement for under a grad used.

    The Aquis 400 and Black Bay 58 were on my short list for a new watch. The Oris particularly is absolutely gorgeous. However, Oris are very shy regarding water resistance testing for their divers. I contacted the company twice asking about this (supposedly 72 hour reply...) and received no response. Tudor, however, told me. I was impressed. So I bought the Black Bay. I've lost my respect for Oris.
