I own one of these, and I’d like to comment on the push/pull pots. When you tap the pickups they resemble P-90s, but when you tap them AND pull the phase pot, it gets that strat sound you’d be looking for, but if your strat had a mahogany body.

Just bought a new 2022 Classic, before i watched this video. I own several Les Pauls and have to admit, this Classic is outstanding. As a Peter Green fan, I love the out of phase sound most of all the options. Coil splitting is not really useful to me. I got the lemon burst and it is stunning...top seems to be a single piece. Captain and Pete, as always, I love your playing and reviews!!!

Awesome review! Watched it like 20 times and finally bought one in Honeyburst two weeks ago. Best electric guitar I EVER got in my hands (and I had a few, like Custom Shop PRS models and stuff)! Sounds, features, neck, playability everything perfect here. And say what you want - I just love the coil splitting option. Better clean tone than my Tele (and I love my Tele as well). Get your hands on one of these as long as they're on the market!
Thanks for this comment! It’s reassuring to know that someone has one and loves it! It’s been a real journey trying to decide between this and the standard 50’s. My journeys to my local guitar shop have helped but I still find myself waffling!
Nice review and demonstration guys thanks, but PLEASE note the difference between "coil split," and "coil tap." The Gibson Classic has "coil tap," which simple means a reduced signal, as the pick up "taps" into fewer windings. It's still a humbucker, and not meant to sound like a single coil. . .that would require a "coil split." Great playing by the way. Cheers!

So, I have to find this LP that gives me the perfect Blues "Strat" tone and also be able to play some rock 'n roll. You also have to consider the price of these two guitars. It's almost 2 grand for each guitar so, for most people out there there is only one option, either the LP or the Strat. Don't misunderstand me, I know that it's almost impossible to make this happen, but personally I would really like to own a Les Paul with coil splitting only for the clean Blues tones, that a single coil pickup could give me. Thank you for all these videos you make. They are very very helpful. Keep it that way!!
You could replace your pups with a set of Duncans or Lollars that can give you those sounds you desire. Be about a $250 to $300 investment but well worth it. If a person invests several hundred dollars to upgrade the Classic's hardwear, shoot, he'd have a guitar that sounds and plays just as well as the Standard.
I think the classic is going to become the standout favorite from the new series because of the price point, the comfortable neck profile and the Alnico V pickups. Kinda odd to see the classic without the 496r/500t combo, but it does seem with modern amps high output ceramic humbuckers have fallen out of favor.
The combo of 496r and 500t pups sound better than any other Gibson pk-ups on a Lester, especially when coming thru a Marshall stack. Nothing in the world sounds better than that.🙂
@@TMmodify they are crap, the original Les Paul tone comes from a solid body, orange drop capacitors, etc, all those things were never something Les Paul lovers wanted. I definitely don't want a Swiss cheese Les Paul with those crappy electronics
Bought one of these in Heritage Cherry from Andertons last year - incredibly flexible guitar for jamming with my friends or playing with my band. Can play straight Les Paul beef for dirty rock or tap the coils and pretend I'm playing a Strat for the more spangled songs. Perfect for the price too.
In a covers band playing all different styles of music, its good to be able to swap between single coils and humbuckers without changing guitars every time, even if the tone isn't perfectly authentic.
If I were to buy a Gibson LP now, I think I would go for the Classic. There is one thing that bugs me though. These days, the Honeyburst finish they do is too light. If they offered a burst that was a shade inbetween the current Cherry and Honey bursts, that would be ideal. That would probably be "Iced Tea" right? Would rather not spend more for the 60s Standard, though.
I had a classic . bought it in 2002 its the only guitar from years ago I miss. Loved it so much I will own another one day. Glad to see Gibson kept this model.
If it says Gibson Les Paul on the headstock, I love it. I've had two. A 94 Studio which I unfortunately had to sell and I've now a 2017 Studio. I may try to trade up at some point, but I'll never be without one. It's my number one.
I just bought my second 2019 LP Classic. The first was a Honeyburst and I have just bought the Heritage Cherry classic. These plain tops are really beautiful. Understated with the natural wood grain and subtle burst. I may stick some pickup covers on the Cherry just for aestetics but there is no need to mod these Classics. They are....errrr....classic!!!
Redduke Teleman I just received my honeyburst today and I’m so disappointed with the colouring, it actually looks unburst in most light 😩. Really loving playing Guitar. The binding isn’t great either. Back to Andertons it will go and hopefully they will swap it out for a heritage cherry sunburst.does your honeyburst almost look like just lacquered wood when you are looking directly on top of it? Mine has two horrible knots in the wood at either side.such a shame as it plays and sounds better than my desert burst standard
I have one of these (bought in April 2022) which apparently has the 9-hole weight relief. But I swear it's physically the heaviest guitar I've ever picked up. I need to x-ray it because I swear mine doesn't have the holes drilled in it!
I just purchased the les paul classic in ebony... I have no problem with the added electronics.my epiphone sg also has them and i'm mostly forgetting they exist.. Every once in a while, I look down and say. Oh let's pull those and see what we think. And then i'm pushing back down...
Out of everyone in the Andertons videos, it is most obvious that Pete loves to just jam. The first to jump in and the first to give it back to you. And the look on his face says it all. Sure bet he'd be great to hang out with and jam.
I can see advantages of coil-splitting for a gigging guitarist. 3 sets a night, several nights a week, its a lot less gear hauling and guitar changing.
I have one of these in Honeyburst, it's the heaviest Les Paul I've ever played! And I've played quite a few. I've had non-weight-relieved ones that are lighter! Oh, and it's from Anderton's.
@@BrianLeverett Yeah, I've no idea how it's so heavy. I know there's a lot of people who swear that lighter ones sound better, maybe they have a point, I don't know, but this current backbreaker of a beast I have is, in my opinion, the best sounding LP I've ever played.
The Captain was clearly practicing "Little Wing" and "Slither" so he could show off during these videos and I applaud him for it. Of course, if I'm wrong and he spontaneously pulled them out, that's even more impressive.
jeff carter right?!? I love a good plain top Les Paul. I’m super excited about the direction Gibson is heading. After years of quality problems and a CEO steering the ship in the wrong direction, I think they’re finally back on course. Hopefully this is Gibson’s comeback. 🤘🏻👍🏻
Yup - to me that is the classic look. The honey burst is my favorite and really looks nice. I don't dislike flames...but it seems that with all the veneer "wanabe" tops these days...it cheapens the look (like the cheap cherry bursts as well).
This video helped me to decide to buy this same guitar. Mine is absolutely perfect and much better looking in person than in pictures. I really considered flame top traditional or standard models but I guess I'm bored of the same sunburst flame tops and wanted something different so went for this. All three are great sounding guitars... with very slightly different sounding pickups. I've had less Paul's with BB pros, 490's, and now the 61's. I like them all... the 490's are very warm... but 61's bright and clear. I didn't care for the BB pros much for my style playing... but they are decent too. I don't think you can get a better sounding or playing Les Paul no matter what price you pay. I play a 59 and 60's custom shop a lot too... and this sounds very similar. Interesting about the custom shops is that because the woods used on them is higher quality they are typically as light or lighter than a cheaper weight relieved guitar without having to drill holes. In terms of sound they are really close... the custom shop may be slightly more woody sounding. The classic I got is just as perfectly constructed as any custom shop I've played but I have gotten lucky. I have a couple of expensive PRS guitars too .. which I love but I think you get more for your money with Gibson... considering you can get a standard flame or classic bound USA guitar for half of what you pay for a core PRS. Again I love both but my PRS way overpriced.
Captain Lee is a humble guy when it comes to his playing . He often let's his co host tear it up but captain Lee is actually a really great player himself
Split coils are cool.if you need something extra in your sound if you need it. If not you dont have to use them or you could go with a les Paul without them
Man. Danish Pete is a man after my own heart. True guitar geek. Rob and Lee & all the rest have great guitars too, obviously, but to me... Pete has the *best* guitars, man. That purple Tele.. the PRS sent straight from Paul.. (to be fair Lee has one of those too) ... but most of all, that self-relic'd goldtop is the SINGULAR reason that I've decided that ONE DAY I will own a Les Paul goldtop. Having just recently decided that, this week they release a newly price-reduced *Les Paul Standard 50s Goldtop*.. I'm sold. As someone who has wanted a 58 reissue for a very long time, but absolutely can't pony up $5k for a guitar without selling *literally* all 5 guitars that I own.... this is perfect for me. THANKS to Lee & Pete & Andertons for fueling my GAS and inspiring videos. I'm mostly an acoustic guy, with my 2 best guitars from the Gibson custom shop, but this channel has singlehandedly convinced me that I need a Les Paul (or 335) and a Bassbreaker or other Fender amp. PS did Gibson release anything new with the ES-335 line with this new core range release we got this past week? Keep it up!!! -32 Finish
Pete is being ridiculous, you want a Les Paul to sound like a Les Paul, sure... but a Les Paul that sounds like a Les Paul and has the ability to sound like "something else", is STILL a Les Paul that sounds like a les paul. in other words, It's versatility doesn't impact that at it's basic settings it's still a Les Paul that sounds like a Les Paul.
I agree with Pete being ridiculous, also on what lee said about putting in a humbucker in a strat not sounding like a led Paul is due to scale more than anything else, and may be offset by pickup placement? I'm not sure, not really entirely relevant but worth saying.
I bought my Traditional and it was the same price as a Standard back in 09 and it is basically the same difference as the Classic. Plain Top, Push/Pulls and the same pickups you'd have found some standards, no blower. I don't feel like I bought something that should have been cheaper, I considered it the best purchase of my guitar journey. So I woulldn't let the price difference suggest "it's a Les Paul BUT..." I would say it's definitely legit and that's something you have to weigh before just buying a Standard. Are you sure you wouldn't be happier with features? Because while everyone rags on coil taps, they do provide tonal voicings that you can achieve to play single coil voiced songs. It takes some doing, and I've yet to see a shootout where you set up a whole rig designed to assist in getting that sound to truly test the theories. Sure, straight in an amp it's as clear as night and day, but a couple, not many, pedals can help minimize that. And different Amps are also a great help. I have a strat but still prefer to use my Les Paul because switching guitars means I now have to change everything. I can't just plug and play on the same settings for the pedal or the amp. I defintiely get a great sound just pulling the knobs.....and not just on my guitar.
My father in law has a 2017 Classic and I think they have 57's humbuckers. They dropped Burstbucker 61R and 61T's and I think they did an outstanding job and the guitar is a great value .. coil taps etc. $2000 all in . Nice! and yes Lee.. i think this is the player that wants the Standard and is going to save $500 . They sound sweet. Thanks again Lee and Pete. Some real sweet tasty jams as usual.
The reason these LPs don't sound 'Fender authentic' in single-coil modes is that they're still in series, and when used alone it's not necessarily the coil you should be using for that sound (flip your neck HB over and you'll hear the difference). In LPs, the Tele and Strat-o-tones are really only available when you wire one or both pickups to switch between series hb, or 'parallel with itself' hb. With (for example) the bridge p/u single-coil, and the neck p/u parallel hb, it gets Tele ~authority~....both in parallel with the tone rolled back gets the "in-between" 2 and 4 Strat sound. This arrangement seems to work best with low-output HBs (AlNiCo2, like PAFs). You can wire a 3-way DPDT to provide 1) parallel-with-itself HB [quack], 2) series HB [LP as usual] , and 3) single-coil [bridge p/u hot/outside coil; neck p/u dummy-coil...or however it sounds best to you lol]. Basically, you need the neck p/u to be able to run as a parallel with itself hb, and the bridge p/u to tap the proper coil when you want....The "blow" push/pull on that volume pot ought to be a series/parallel switch for the neck p/u; you'd have a legit Tele, and Strat-o-5-way tone hiding in your LP. I drilled out my 2011 double-cut gold top Standard for 2 3-ways when I installed a set of Darkmoon Aurora A2 HBs; now, unless it's going series HB (classic LP-tone), you'd have NO FLIPPING IDEA whether I'm playing a Tele, Strat, or hot-rod LP in a 'blind test'. If you don't have the cojones to drill your LP body, you could arrange the push/pulls in the vid thusly: 2 of them as single/hb switches, and the other 2 as series/parallel (when in hb mode).....the 'blow' switch is far less useful in the scheme of things, and uses up a critical switch-location.
I like the plain tops. Flame is done to death. I really like the classic although I don’t care for weight relief or Really the coil split but it still is a great guitar.
Nice guitars. Thanks for the video. I don't think I would use the coil split much for recording, but I might use it live when I need a more 'strummy' sound. It should be a good sound to sing over.
Never mind Gibson is back but these new Gibson vids have proved Andertons is back too. What the channel was and should be all about. Relaxed good fun with all the info.
I could see your complaints about having the extra push-pull features that you don't want, or need - BUT IF YOU HAD TO PAY FOR THEM. With these Classics, you can treat it exactly like you would treat a Standard. That was my plan when I added my Classics (blem price was far too good to pass up
Strange vibe in this video guys, Peter's distane for these is strong. I love the look of that honey burst, for me the flame and triple flame bling with all the glitter is to Liberace. The coil split sounds good too, great having access to more tones. Each to their own tone. Pete showed more love for the 2020 Epiphone than he did for this Gibson, I guess we just got to find what works for ourselves and go with that, if it sounds good, it is good.
It really marries everything you like about a studio with a standard. Recording wise, having the versatility means you can do most of what you need on one guitar. That doesn’t mean we quit collecting them, though 😅
Working with the technician, Page designed a switching system for coil splitting, series/parallel, and phase-reverse options. The result comprised, a revolutionary system of a push/pull pot on each of the guitar's four standard controls now known as the signature "Jimmy Page Wiring."
One the Epi ES-335 Pro, the pickup split doesn't do a Fender tone at the bridge or really even enhance the sound much, but the neck pickup is another story. It doesn't do full Fender chime, but it does have a more jangly attack which goes well with the neck pickup sound. It's definitely not a Fender sound, but I like it.
I feel like Rob always set his amps kinda weird. It was always kind of nasal and fizzy no matter what guitar he played. Pete seems to set the amp for much more classic sounding tones.
Doesn’t the coil split just mean you can get a close sound to the p90 gold top standard but the versatility of a humbucker, in a Studio situation isn’t it best to have as many tone options as possible, it sounded useable to me. Horses for courses
If you’re going to buy a Les Paul the Classic is the best bang for the buck.I have a Heritage Cherry Sunburst and a Gold Top and love them more than the Standard I sold.
Just bought this guitar in honeyburst several months ago. Love the looks and the tones coming out of my Friedman Runt 20. Next up, getting a Strat and putting some SD Billy Gibbons Red Devils in it, a Strat w/ single coils, and a Telecaster. Then a Taylor acoustic. Then a resonator guitar. Then..... Damn, this hobby is going to break me.
I very recently got myself a '19 honeyburst classic, not because it's cheaper (although I love a bargain, but could afford the standard). I chose it over the standard because it looks amazing, has the versatility of the push/pulls, and I prefer a non flamed top. I absolutely love it!
Chappers is great but Pete just brings such a mellow vintagey vibe to these videos that I love.

So far the greatest sounding ones in my opinion, they spread the jimmy page vibes all over the place, can't wait to play one!!!
Also greatest job the captain has done in a demo so far he really showed his value in this one
Lee's probably been waiting to bust out that little wing intro for ages now
Oisin McPhillips When?
@@benfrancoeur1913 Since he started taking lessons from Justin.
I'm loving the classics!! Gibson is back man!!
These are my favorites of the new line. The honeyburst one looks amazing.
Pretty sure the wine red one should now be listed as second hand!! Leave the knobs alone Pete.
Features are more like a "Studio Plus" then a "cheap standard", i like it...
Tops are nice aswell
I can see advantages of coil-splitting for a gigging guitarist. 3 sets a night, several nights a week, its a lot less gear hauling and guitar changing.
I have one of these in Honeyburst, it's the heaviest Les Paul I've ever played! And I've played quite a few. I've had non-weight-relieved ones that are lighter! Oh, and it's from Anderton's.
Right! My Classic is every bit as heavy as my Traditional.
@@BrianLeverett Yeah, I've no idea how it's so heavy. I know there's a lot of people who swear that lighter ones sound better, maybe they have a point, I don't know, but this current backbreaker of a beast I have is, in my opinion, the best sounding LP I've ever played.
They sound Great....
Coil split is cool if used properly.. what’s properly ..?
The Captain was clearly practicing "Little Wing" and "Slither" so he could show off during these videos and I applaud him for it.
Of course, if I'm wrong and he spontaneously pulled them out, that's even more impressive.
Those plain tops on them les pauls😍😍😍
jeff carter right?!? I love a good plain top Les Paul. I’m super excited about the direction Gibson is heading. After years of quality problems and a CEO steering the ship in the wrong direction, I think they’re finally back on course. Hopefully this is Gibson’s comeback. 🤘🏻👍🏻
Each to his own. For me they need to be flame-y, the more stripe figured the better!
I agree. It seems like every guitar, even cheap ones have flame maple tops. I used to like the flame tops but now they seem like the plain guitars.
@@scottakamYes, I suppose it's easy to simulate these days.
You guys should totally get this kinda stuff out on podcast.
Full on les paul obsession after a great week. Well done guys
Can you please do a video or just a short where you plug Gibson LP Classic into crancked Marshall JTM Studio?😮😊
-32 Finish
That one Lee plays in the beginning is beautiful!
Damn captain that small jam in the middle after talking about coilsplitting was awsome. Ended way to soon.
Lost you at "Les Paul"... x)
Well said
Right on! More options is good. Most split sounds are usable somewhere sometime. Pete: fået morgen kaffen?
I agree with Pete being ridiculous, also on what lee said about putting in a humbucker in a strat not sounding like a led Paul is due to scale more than anything else, and may be offset by pickup placement? I'm not sure, not really entirely relevant but worth saying.
Thank you! Pete doesn't know what he is talking about ..
I defintiely get a great sound just pulling the knobs.....and not just on my guitar.
yes fuck yeah. the captain learned to play so good. great to see improvement.
Pete smashed it Lee Slashed it great demo guys .Well done Gibson what a great new range of guitars
Something about Gibsons and Grovers is just a magical look and sound
Coil tap on an lp is like a P-90. Coil split only available on the HP models of 2018
loved that velvet revolver bit!
Word on the mean streets of Bend, Oregon is that these are quite good.
These have been the best Gibson reviews ever lol I love it
That back line is very impressive. Perfect background for guitar review show.
When I purchased my Les Paul classic in 1991 it was approximately £300 dearer than a standard.
Sounds and looks fantastic . Great playing lads . 🤘
I adore my Ebony Classic. Perfection!
I like Rob but I am not gonna lie, the gear demos with Pete and the Captain are miles ahead of the gear demos with Rob. I hope they continue this way.
Rob is just full of himself and it shows. Great guitarist, funny bloke but that ain‘t everything.
I feel like Rob always set his amps kinda weird. It was always kind of nasal and fizzy no matter what guitar he played. Pete seems to set the amp for much more classic sounding tones.
Love those colours man.... really nice. I hope the quality of the build is as good as the colours
Pete is a really tasteful and enjoyable guitarist, and I say that as someone who does not listen to mellow music.
Probably been said before... what a tough job you chaps have! spose someone has to do it
Doesn’t the coil split just mean you can get a close sound to the p90 gold top standard but the versatility of a humbucker, in a Studio situation isn’t it best to have as many tone options as possible, it sounded useable to me. Horses for courses
MTB Life yeah. i own one of these and can tell you that the coil taps sound fine, not rly like p90s but the phase switching is the absolute coolest.
Most rockin lick Lee ever played is at 12:50. Velvet Revolver!!! Nce playing man!
Great for cover band guys to have all those different sounds in one guitar
If you’re going to buy a Les Paul the Classic is the best bang for the buck.I have a Heritage Cherry Sunburst and a Gold Top and love them more than the Standard I sold.
Omg the gibsons are so beatiful
Just bought this guitar in honeyburst several months ago. Love the looks and the tones coming out of my Friedman Runt 20. Next up, getting a Strat and putting some SD Billy Gibbons Red Devils in it, a Strat w/ single coils, and a Telecaster. Then a Taylor acoustic. Then a resonator guitar. Then..... Damn, this hobby is going to break me.
Is no one going to talk about how great Capitan Lee is doing with his playing?!?!?!?
I've been waiting for Lee to drop Little Wing on here. Good shit brother
9:21 - I have a PRS S2 Standard 22 w/ #7s, the coil split is the same on that as well. Blows me away how "right" they got it.
I very recently got myself a '19 honeyburst classic, not because it's cheaper (although I love a bargain, but could afford the standard). I chose it over the standard because it looks amazing, has the versatility of the push/pulls, and I prefer a non flamed top. I absolutely love it!
Funk McFingers I did the exact same, mines on the way. It will be my first Gibson LP ever!
Sick playing Lee!
