@@TheTapMusic This at least gives me relief knowing even the high end custom shops suffer from this problem. I just bought 50s standard and its a fantastic guitar, but I really struggled with the neck pickup. It sounded like a good pickup with tons of potential but there was a blanket over the amp at all times. And apparently a lot of Les Paul owners report those issues with their guitars.

I like both, but the video of Rob and Lee always makes me smile. When I was living at home, my dad and I always made a tradition to go out to various guitar shops on Black Friday and look at the gear we wanted but could not afford. We’d drive around and listen to Joe Satriani, Dream Theater, Rush, and Megadeth. After a long day of window shopping we’d stop for lunch and hang out. The Anderton’s video always reminds me of those days.

"It's not as bright"/"sounds a bit muffled" ... Lee, measure the volume pot(s) and find replacements higher in the spec range (pots have a 20% tolerance range). See what tone cap is in there and go the next smaller common uF (if 0.047uf then go 0.033uf). If you want to go more radical, put the tone cap you removed in series with the muddy pickup hot lead. The controls, they actually control the tone, even when the knobs are dimed! I used to swap pickups until I figured out how much influence can be obtained with $10 in parts. Don't forget to adjust pickup heights and screw pole heights, that's a free mod (lower is often better).

so (generally) the sustain of a (otherwise equal constructed) guitar is influenced by the weight. It was no surprise to me, as i find
one can hear the strong attack on the lighter guitar as well. If you change some parts on the "not so good" guitar, it will be 99 %
there in sound as the lighter Guitar.

Love this and the other video featuring Pete’s “automobile priced” LP. One thing I’ll say, as an owner of a 2008 Traditional and now a 2020(?) Tradition Pro V…don’t underestimate the impact of dialing in your pickup height and the individual pole pieces as well. I bet you could “open up” Lee’s sound if you adjusted the pickup and pole heights. After I spent some time dialing in both of mine it’s exactly what I want to hear out of a LP when I play it.

During the intro I thought it was the difference in amps as Pete's sounded clearer and really bloomed. But plugged into the same amp the tone followed the guitar.
If it were a tool I used for my work it's definitely worth the extra price. But, at my skill level the difference world would never be noticed.

pick-ups and pots make a big difference, pick-up height changes how mine sounds, its crazy. even the pick you use changes the sound some. should try messing around at home with just different picks and picks with points, different thickness, kinda crazy. mess around with your picks, and adjusting your pick-up height.... could get lost doing that lol

I once passed up a Gibson Les Paul R6 gold top in Boston Guitar Center.. the serial number was R6 606 .. the Gibson rep was in store and was basically selling everything thing off cheap.. I um’ed and are’d.. put it back .. and walked out.. but.. I couldn’t stop thinking about the guitar.. two days later I called the store from the UK and it had been sold. I still cry myself to sleep at night. So whenever you find “that” guitar and you have the funds - buy it. Trust me.. it’s not worth the pain and tears not too.. ps.. if you have that guitar.. Watching this after watching the shoot at the Gibson showroom that recently released, is cool. Listening to you guys describe the neck pickup on Pete's guitar being perhaps lower output, then seeing Sam measure them to only find out that Pete's has higher output, was very interesting. Between that, the unplugged acoustic superiority of Pete's, and Pete's being a full pound lighter... it absolutely has to be the porosity of the wood.

Walked into a shop one day in the early 2000s and there was a cheap, Fender Japan Tele hanging on the wall selling for the equivalent of US$440. I asked to play it and it was the most resonant electric guitar I've ever played. Loud and proud. It came home. Creeping up on 20 years later, it's got '64 Pure Vintage pickups and CTS pots in it and it is sonic heaven through a dimed Marshall. My Les Paul Special Tribute is a similar story in that it's just so beautifully alive. And the P-90s are magic. LOLsigh "Guitars ..."

Both Lee and Danish Pete have great sounding LPs but I think Danish Pete's has a certain "X" factor. While there are many contributing factors of why a guitar sounds a certain way I'm sure DP's LP has markedly different pickups, pots and caps than Lee's. Recently, I swapped out the pickups and electronics with my LP and I was reminded by how much they affect your tone rather than incidental things like finish.
