Funny that she was taken to St. Mary's instead of Mayo? Would she have been caught sooner had she gone there? St. Mary's is in the nearby vicinity so equally likely to have gone to Mayo.
I looked up gout and it is apparently a metabolic disorder suspected to be the result of mitochondrial dysfunction. There is a toxicology professor at the Duluth university of Minnesota who specializes in exactly this area. He has many published papers, awards, and has spoken at conferences around the world. So his input would be very informative.
I had come across his information years ago when I became interested in criminal poisoning, which is why I looked him up again. Interesting it turned out that is his specialty!
He googled Colchicine.. maybe he should've kept reading for the articles about murder cases where that was found to be used. Mary Yoder immediately comes to mind.
I'm a mere radiographer but my assumption is that every poison/medication will be detectable somehow - whether it's through extensive toxicology tests or the toll it takes on specific organs or cells. Just glad there are doctors and medical examiners etc who are persistent in investigating for a final answer, rather than lazily marking it off based on a few of the victim's final symptoms (like acute bowel necrosis could've been attributed to other illnesses/diseases, so it's great they kept looking at toxicology).
