11/15/20 update! I have a pretty bad steering leak in two different points, the major one being in the rack and pinion. it's not terrible, but i refill my power steering fluid about once every two weeks. if it runs out i am physically not strong enough to steer my car :)))) but other than that it's doing great! The adhesive on the plastic casing of the turbo engine hood also detached so that plastic case started slapping against the hood of my car whenever I drove over 15mph, so i sealed it down with packing tape after krazy glue didn't work.
I have pretty much the exact same car, and I love it, but beware, when the turbo goes out, its very expensive, I learned this the hard way, so good luck, and enjoy
Don't be tempted to run it with the power steering fluid run out. Even if you can steer it there is a good chance you could cease the pump at which point it will throw off the serpentine belt and cause the alternator to quit. I know this because my daughter did this and, thanks to the pump being totally scrapped, was an expensive fix (for me of course - cost free to her 8-)= )
No doubt!! Hit me up if you know anyone in NC that's looking. I have an 08 identical to Jane's except it is a 5speed. Only 105,000 miles on it currently. I've decided to sell it since it's a 3rd vehicle and I want a pickup truck or full size SUV
I love this car. I bought a gold '08 xt a few years ago. It has been a pain in my ass, but I LOVE it. Bit of a sleeper on the road and it's a tank. off road and on.
We have an 08 l.l.bean outback. I ordered a mic for the nav system and installed a backup camera that shows on the nav screen. Just replaced the engine. Love the car and didn't want to part with it. So now it's like having a new one! Keep her running they are getting hard to find especially the turbo.
Firstly, belated birthday wishes in the year 2019. So proud of you for getting a car on your own at the age of 19.! Its a steal deal for the price you mentioned. Subarus are great cars, I think all their models are all wheel drives. Panoramic sun roof is super 👌. Quite spacious. I wish you did more automobile related videos too, only if you are ok with it. You are quite knowledgeable on its working as well. Most of the people who owns a car just drives it but wont have any clue on its mechanical side. Didn't know alexa has a car version, i need to do some research on that. Awesome video, enjoyed it.
My first car was a 97 Subaru Legacy Outback I got in December and I LOVE HER. I agree with you, they're a SHE because they really be mothering. Currently looking to get a 2008-2013 for city driving ad mine is manual and in busier cities an automatic transmission wouldn't be a bad idea. BEAUTIFUL! Great video, I am myself a Subaru fan and spokesperson, hopefully you still got her!
You have good taste, congratulations for your first subie! actually that manual mode is not fake. ok. not the same feeling like the normal ones but let you to pull until rev and don't shifting up not like these other types actually fakes... recently I am using this mode and like it!
I have a 2008 subaru as well. No major issues yet. The only thing I had to replace was the radiator after 3 years of having it and that was only around 200 but my mechanic was concerned about my axel so it came out to be 600 all together. This is the first car I bought on my own and it's doing me pretty well. 😁
@@ob882 yup still running. Just had a recent fluid change and refill for my breaks and transmission. I did the transmission myself. And did my fluid break change at a subaru dealer. Break fluid can be corrosive so I didn't feel safe to tackle it. I'm about to pass 200,000 miles.
I bought an 09 Outback for less than 2k though I did have to buy 4 new tires. Mine has just over 220k miles, bought it with around 204k miles 3 yrs ago. Engine still running strong. Only repairs I've done was rear struts, shocks, brake pads(front/rear) and rotors(front). Need front suspension repaired soon as parts are worn out. So overall I've spent around a little over 1k in repairs though nothing with the engine or trans. So tbh I think it was a great purchase. Hopefully it can reach 300k miles.
this is exciting! I just got myself a 2020 nissan versa sv. i'm a toyota person but i dropped the gun too fast and this is what i ended up leaving the lot with, lol i'm grateful! all glory to god! i like watching these types of videos! i have videos of my car on my channel too!
Just got my first Subi myself and am kind of loving it I think. It came with some issues and so I could be loving it more but that's the world of used cars. To that point I congratulate you on buying used and paying cash. Doing otherwise is usually such a rip off. Anyway, I wanted to offer something I learned about AWD, and particularly Subaru's AWD system, and that is the importance that your tires all match in size, and they even recommend you keep them balanced regarding tire wear, yes that sounded extreme to me but it's true. So if you buy tires at less than 4 at a time as needed, like me, be aware that it is a bit harder on the AWD system if your tires overall diameter differs. This is true not only from side to side but front to back as well. So typically people that own AWD cars replace all 4 tires at a time. "But what if you just have to replace one damaged tire?" you may ask. Apparently some people actually do have the new tire "shaved down", as they call it, to lower the tread depth to make the tire match the overall size of the others. Myeah, not sure I am ready to throw away all that tire I paid good money for either but I suppose that may be a lot cheaper than differential repair work sooooo. Well, I'm just sharing what I learned about this subject that I didn't even know existed until yesterday. I'm thinking it is good to know to at least buy tires that match, at least in diameter, your other ones. Some people might go with two slightly different ones on the back than on the front, etc.. Also a good idea to keep a full size spare tire in it, if you have the room. Maybe just save the best of your old tires, when you get new ones, for that role.
My family and I have a vacation home in the bahamas and we bought a used Japanese version 2006 Subaru outback after having a 1989 Suzuki jeep for over a decade. It drives so well for being how old it is and just being on an island. The only thing id say I don't like about it is how low it is to ground. There's not much clearance for it and I scrape rocks all the time in it. But other than that I'm glad to finally have a car with A/C lool
Jane Dillon Horner wow nice pick !!!!! That’s nice suvs , and yea I just moved upstate nyc not too long ago , I just might have to get a Suburu because of the snow and the weather this winter , even if it cost me crazy like repairs , which it shouldn’t because I keep up with my maintenance on anything I own 🌟🌟
It's the NA Subarus that are known for their long term reliability, not the turbocharged ones. You should get out of that car before it destroys you financially. I speak from experience.
Helped find a 2008 Subaru Legacy for my friend. She loves it! Airbag dash indicator was illuminated because of bad solder joints in overhead console (map light/sunroof controls). Common problem for ‘08 Outback/Legacy. Replaced it for $69 and problem fixed. Great car! - I drive a ‘17 Outback with Primitive Racing skid plates. #SubaruAmbassador
This was a great video! I actually watched your video because im looking around to find a good car for my soon to be 16yr old son im so excited lol. Enjoy your ride
Hi Jane, so glad you bought a subaru. I was going to buy an outback but plumbed for the forester 2011. The outback has much better interior than the forester. Any plastic trim underneath the bonnet (hood) just remove as they're only aesthetic. Make sure you service her every 5000 miles sooner than recommended to make sure engine has cleaner oil sooner than later. I have a manual (stickshift) diesel version (UK option) which when I bought it had 91k miles and now only has just under 97k. No issues with mine as yet. Look after her and she'll do the same to you. Enjoy and stay safe. P.s. im going to convert my forester to do overlanding because your American neighbour in Oregon "SOFTROADING THE WEST". Take care.
Amazing vehicle! I barely got my first Subaru Outback too! I got the regular 2.5 without the sunroof, but it's a cool feature. I got an amazing 112,000 mileage which is good in my opinion, but watching this video helps me understand what it takes to be a responsible car owner.
I think you should be the next spokesgirl for Subaru, I really like your personality and your very cute. You are really good at this (on camera, etc.). I just watched this because I just bought a 2004 Outback and was curious what you might share that I haven't already discovered about it. It's kind of an adventure almost just discovering the neat little features all over the car that I didn't first notice. Not all cars are as fun to discover, from someone that has owned a lot of different cars and trucks. I was shopping for a CRV when my buddy offered me this Legacy Outback, still have no idea what's different about a "Legacy" Outback, but when buying parts don't say you have a Legacy, just say Outback, there is a sedan Legacy as well.
If you take care of it, Subarus will EASILY hit 200k and it’s not at all uncommon to go all the way to 300k!! Wish you all the best and welcome to the Subaru fam! ♡
Unless that turbo has been changed, you better do a compression test and change the turbo before you have to change the motor. The XTs are not known for lasting.
On the farm, we use jbweld to fix radiator leaks, works great. Our 2003 Ford Explorer (Mountaineer) AWD had over 275,000 miles before we had to think about work on the axles, original transmission and engine, still going today. God told us when we prayed that, "He would sustain it as long as we need it." We purchased used for $12,000 @110,000 miles, and it is still going. We live to reflect him, farm like the garden he gave Adam and Eve, live peacefully, fight on our knees in prayer always.
Hopefully by now you figured out that window locks ARE a thing, and the button with the X on the window locks the rear windows (for when you got kids in the car!)…
steering rack is like a 8 peb job depending where you live and how rusty. struggled with some bolts and vice grips on my back in the snow fr a bit but the longest part was re introducing the fluid to the system. cost me 600 for parts. rack and new tie rods. and 12 tall boy pbr's
I just picked up an 09 2.5i for $2,900 rust free (northern salt= lots of rust) that had 192k on the body which had typical wear and tear 👍 motor was replaced about 3 months before I bought it, 60k miles on the bottom end, and the full head gasket/timing package was done at that time 👌 I’ve put almost 7k miles in 2 months I’ve had it, consistently pulling 23-25 mpg mixed 🤘now I’m looking for the XT 😈
Also, I can understand car repair ills. I remember I had a choice to fly or drive related to my business. I took the Explorer to a local shop and learned it would be $2,600 to fix it. I went and priced out the parts and the tools needed. I was able to fix it and pay for gas, round trip for $500, rather than spend the $2,600. I wasn't motivated to fix it, didn't want to fix it. However, once I saw the $2,000 labor I would save, God knew that was just the motivation I needed to trust him, ask some friends for help, plus a guy in the automotive section at Walmart, and all was well. If it wasn't for God saving me every way, every day, I don't know how we would stay debt free, rent free, no worries. Don't give up, life is better on your knees, trusting God, because you don't need human answers. You need God answers, higher answers, for your lower, human problems. Only God the engineer knows exactly what we need, because he designed us. Humans and Doctors just work-on and replicate us.
Nice car, I got a 2008 OBXT. You should tint those windows if you havn't already. You got yours in a nice color, I need to get mine painted that color.
@@ob882 cause it’s a turbo Subaru, period. Jokes aside. The 05-09 obxts can be a very reliable, but you really have to watch them and do your own wrenching to affordably own one. Also you have to be very careful buying them, and look out for certain things. For 05-09 I would avoid the 2.5i outbacks they have HG problems. 2.5xts are good if you do a ton of research about them first and are determined to wrench. 3.0r outbacks (h6 motor) are a great choice if you’re not going to wrench, want something with power, and is reliable (HGs aren’t as big of a problem on them) Edit: For specificity: the obxt has a relatively expensive motor which is very easy to destroy and will cost you $4K minimum to address. That on top of many other maintenance items with them. For reference. I’ve owned an ‘05 3.0r outback and currently own an ‘05 obxt
I do like the 08-09s a lot but I would not be disappointed with the 05. The 05 uses the Sti long block from that year, the b25 heads in there are worth gold! Very cool 😎
OK, so as a fellow Scooby owner, 3 cars over 16 years, the second was T-boned on a roundabout by an old "but my indicator was on" Lady. I have always thought the followers of Pleiades were a level headed bunch, there have been some, that driving has been taken to another level, "if in doubt, go flat out!" (Mr McRea) but I am at a loss as to why, when you leave a perfectly sound house, which I presume has running water and electricity, to go on a journey to Tarbuck$ to buy a coffee? At least the journey was in a Scooby.
If it makes you feel any better about car issues...my first car was a 1990 truck i paid 5k (180k miles) then sank another 5k (paint, body work).....1 year later I heard an engine knock. so i took it to the mechanic...while it was being diagnosed a co-worker offered me 3k and would pay the mechanic bill no matter what was wrong with it ...I said screw it and took the money (lol sucker i thought to myself ).....well it turned out it was a simple spark plug replacement....DAMN LMAO. I put that 3k into a down payment on a new truck. I still see my old truck in town sometimes LOL
I would say be gentle with the throttle, most boxer engine from this era will have a head gasket failure at some point, both my 07 and 05 legacy wagon base and GT (turbo) have head gasket replacement, and the GT engine because of knock and ringland failure, and I don't race both of these cars. if you start smelling burnt oil smell or your radiator fluid looks milky stop driving it before inflicting more damage on the block. Getting a tune "optimize" map would help the engine run healthier as EJ25 turbo engines are known to run rich (note "optimize" not "more power") don't bother with getting any cobb accessport because this is going to be your daily car. Is a very good reliable car if you know how to take care of it but once you start pushing it that is where you going to break the bank more than you need.
@@katwilliams2950 Had this same car since 2007... not saying it's been bad or even unreliable but it's had quite a few problems and I have put quite a bit of money into it just trying to get it running right... even after all that it still leaks oil and power steering fluid.
Keep it topped up with 0w20 synthetic oil, GENUINE Subaru coolant, get the wheels aligned once a year and that car should run to 250k miles no prob. Subaru makes a fun and reliable car as long as you keep on top of the maintenance schedule which you can find in your owners manual. Also here is a great channel on all things Subaru: m.ruclips.net/channel/UCsEqh-pqzb0_BI39xbJXf5A Enjoy your car👍
@@marcusjohnfritz-woodle3666 i actually tried to get an aftermarket double-din navi screen with CarPlay! i did months and months of research, bought all these foreign parts and the radio/navi setup as well and after hundreds of dollars and months spent, the guys who were installing it called me an hour after I dropped my car off and said that it was impossible. the 2.5xt trim is the only (or one of the only) trims of the 2008 outback with automatic climate controls rather than manual, so if I were to re-wire the radio, i'd cut off power to the AC. it was such a bummer.
@@JaneDillonHorner This Is not impossible but you need a custom-made cable to operate the existing automatic air-conditioning system, the guy that did the installation wasn't familiar with the infotainment system technically you only need these two parts to install your double din aftermarket radio. Subaru 4EAT transmissions are super reliable, don’t worry. It would be a good idea to replace all the fluids: Engine Oil, Automatic Transmission Fluid, Brake Fluid just for peace of mind.
I hate to say it but a pretty or nice person no matter what. Their gender always helps. I would definitely give a pretty or nice person no matter what their gender or transgender would be. A better price. Some people come looking for a car looking like junk and you want to give them a junk price because they don't want them driving your old junk lol
You could be ugly AF as long as you got perfume and makeup on or cologne and just worked out. It helps. Trust me all these things help in your life all the time
Tiny your windows. It will help keep your seats cooler! I had an 08 Infiniti with black leather and once I tinted the windows, soooo much more tolerable. And the southern sun is just as bad as that Cali sun!

And the panoramic sunroof is super important!
Is a 2006 subaru outback with 180k a smart move for a used car at present?
Nice car, I got a 2008 OBXT. You should tint those windows if you havn't already. You got yours in a nice color, I need to get mine painted that color.
"If any car can run well with a lot of miles, it's a 94 Toyota celica"
-scotty k.
Or a honda
And if a timing belt or a timing chain has gone bad. There's a good chance that most of your motor has also
I got mine 4 years ago.no problems at all .I love it
Did your head gaskets hold up?
Aye turbo Subaru wagon gang (Subaru 👋 )
YES
Ahahaha there’s no way you survived this car but props if you did
why is that? and would it be better to get the regular model?
@@ob882 cause it’s a turbo Subaru, period. Jokes aside. The 05-09 obxts can be a very reliable, but you really have to watch them and do your own wrenching to affordably own one. Also you have to be very careful buying them, and look out for certain things. For 05-09 I would avoid the 2.5i outbacks they have HG problems. 2.5xts are good if you do a ton of research about them first and are determined to wrench. 3.0r outbacks (h6 motor) are a great choice if you’re not going to wrench, want something with power, and is reliable (HGs aren’t as big of a problem on them)
Edit: For specificity: the obxt has a relatively expensive motor which is very easy to destroy and will cost you $4K minimum to address. That on top of many other maintenance items with them.
For reference. I’ve owned an ‘05 3.0r outback and currently own an ‘05 obxt
@@TheMCVillage They are pretty powerful lol I used to tear up the parking lot in my OBXT and shut down Mustang V6's and Camaro v6s lol
got one at 79k miles and was absolutely trash, if you look at these make sure the previous owners took good care of them :)
You got a awsome deal the car looks great
You have my dream spec! I have an manual 05 obxt. :p
I do like the 08-09s a lot but I would not be disappointed with the 05. The 05 uses the Sti long block from that year, the b25 heads in there are worth gold! Very cool 😎
Just got the same one in blue yesterday I need to know more lol I can't get the hood open
If your dash gets stick and old tape off everything you don't want to paint and then paint the stuff that is sticking old!
I'll bet she had some freshly sliced onions in that cup to induce the tear drop, lol.
LMFAO I’m an actor so I was practicing crying on command
I have a 2008 Subaru. So if you have any questions about it, let me know;)
OK, so as a fellow Scooby owner, 3 cars over 16 years, the second was T-boned on a roundabout by an old "but my indicator was on" Lady.
Not the highest trim I got the 3.0 ll bean edition
Those sunroofs are so terrible when they brake
That's a solid car!
Great video and very helpful🤙
Good luck with a high milage turbo subaru🥶
the center lid falls off mine all the time 🙃
Came for the Subaru stayed for you
I would say be gentle with the throttle, most boxer engine from this era will have a head gasket failure at some point, both my 07 and 05 legacy wagon base and GT (turbo) have head gasket replacement, and the GT engine because of knock and ringland failure, and I don't race both of these cars. if you start smelling burnt oil smell or your radiator fluid looks milky stop driving it before inflicting more damage on the block.
Aja by Steely Dan. You were taught well, Grasshopper!...
:) still really want to add Katy Lied to my collection though
Goodness gracious, be prepared for problems
Why do you say this?
@@katwilliams2950 Had this same car since 2007... not saying it's been bad or even unreliable but it's had quite a few problems and I have put quite a bit of money into it just trying to get it running right... even after all that it still leaks oil and power steering fluid.
@@carlenger9707 thank you. I'm looking at a 2008 outback 160k for 5k and it's my first car. I want to make sure I am aware of common issues
@@katwilliams2950 what engine is in it?

Nice car I like the 2.5outback ..I got one too but it's a 2005
Keep it topped up with 0w20 synthetic oil, GENUINE Subaru coolant, get the wheels aligned once a year and that car should run to 250k miles no prob. Subaru makes a fun and reliable car as long as you keep on top of the maintenance schedule which you can find in your owners manual.
Also here is a great channel on all things Subaru: m.ruclips.net/channel/UCsEqh-pqzb0_BI39xbJXf5A
Enjoy your car👍
I brought my first subaru at 19 my birthday was three weeks ago
Thumbs up for ASIA by Steely Dan. 2009 XT Turbo here - same color / trim.
Luxury 😍
you know it
I bet you could have a back-up camera installed. Nice car. I'm happy for you!
Back up and could have gotten an after market Navi to replace the broken screen. But the cubby is cute!

Lol, you messed up with a turbo
Good luck. My 2006 Forester had a transmission failure within 7 months of purchase and I had to buy a new car. Only 140,000 miles.
Oh no!!! That's so unfortunate!!
I heard the same thing about their automatic transmissions. Make sure the transmission oil has been up to date on changes.
Subaru 4EAT transmissions are super reliable, don’t worry. It would be a good idea to replace all the fluids: Engine Oil, Automatic Transmission Fluid, Brake Fluid just for peace of mind.
Gracias por los videos subtitulados.
once you buy your first subaru youll never buy another brand
watch that coolant
I hate to say it but a pretty or nice person no matter what. Their gender always helps. I would definitely give a pretty or nice person no matter what their gender or transgender would be. A better price. Some people come looking for a car looking like junk and you want to give them a junk price because they don't want them driving your old junk lol
You could be ugly AF as long as you got perfume and makeup on or cologne and just worked out. It helps. Trust me all these things help in your life all the time
She is looking great though
Tiny your windows. It will help keep your seats cooler! I had an 08 Infiniti with black leather and once I tinted the windows, soooo much more tolerable. And the southern sun is just as bad as that Cali sun!
Tint*
Plus, I want a Subaru Legacy so bad! Nice find!
definitely!! unfortunately, it's illegal to tint your own windows in Los Angeles. My dad did it and he got a huge fine for it!!
