I wrote to the fan club based in the "Purple records" office building, when I was 15 and asked if Roger's "Butterfly Ball" project was going ahead. The chap who ran the club, asked Roger when he came in one day. He said he was about to go into the studio to start work and thanked me for asking .. and signed a piece of paper for me. I was over the moon 😀. I gave the signature .. which I kept in a CD of "Made in Japan"* by Purple, to a young bass player a few years ago. Hope it inspired him too. *Surely the best live hard rock album ever.
Rainbow was rehearsing in the studio where I worked in NY. Roger was a really nice guy. Actually the whole band was cool, and they loved football !!! One of my fondest memories. Every band member signed my "Down to Earth " album. Roger wrote: "See you in night school" !!!!
I just saw him in Biloxi, MS Aug. 29 and I loved his smile as he played! I mean wow! He just kept smiling and enjoying every minute even after all these years. HE was the only one left on stage after the rest of the band left and threw picks out to the audience. What a man!!!
I saw Deep Purple 1984 Worcester Centrum, Worcester, MA. I have seen many concerts but that was one of the best shows I have ever seen in my life. They were all on fire......Lord on the Organ......Roger on Bass.......Ian on Vocal......Ritchie on Guitar and Ian "Keeping the pace" Paice on drums!!!!!! The songs sounded just like the albums and one of the best Laser shows you will ever see. The room was filled with Smoke.....IF you know what I mean and the lighter flames were HIGH!!!!!!! Roger you were Awesome that night as always!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Purple 4 ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! RIP John LORD.
Roger , what a great bloke he is . Great playing and writing . Blackmore admitted his mistake about firing Glover from Purple later on . Deep Purple is not Deep Purple without Roger .
Paul Fuller Well the truth was that Blackmore wanted to take Paice and form a band with the bassist /singer of Thin Lizzy. Paice and Lord tried to convince Blackmore to stay. Blackmore wanted he band to go in a blues direction but didn’t want to fire Glover, he wanted to leave Purple with Paice and be more bluesy with Lynott. When Lynott didn’t work out then they got Hughes and Coverdale. Ritchie didn’t want Glover out because he felt he did something wrong. It sounds like there was no communication back then in bands like that
Absolutely true. I strongly believe that Ritchie Blackmore's guitar solos would never have been nearly as great as they are without Roger Glover and Jon Lord.
It's an evolved person who can forgive and mean it. How he forgave Ritchie for firing him is a statement of his decency. Many wouldn't have given him the time of day.
Never knew the story about those guys in Deep Purple. So I'm glad to finally find out just what went on behind the scenes . Always loved how Purple never messed around but stuck to the Rock n Roll . Only time that they would slow down was to catch their breath. I didn't know that Rodger dreamed up those lyrics for Smoke on the Water with Ian . Great biography thank you much
Been playing bass since I was 6 My 2 main Rock influences were Roger. And Adam from u2..Roger mainly bcuz the bass was always heard in such an amazing group of musicians he made himself heard.
It’s great to see how happy Roger and Ian are now, and the fans are happy. I saw Purple at Wembley Arena in the late 80s, I was expecting a ‘Made In Japan’ experience, but not a hope, mostly because of tensions between singer and guitarist. They actually had to play the last few songs without Blackmore (who had stormed off), talk about childish.
Shoot, the 84ish re-union was a great time!!! So was the record Perfect Strangers! A natural follow up to Who Do We Think We Are! All these years later, Purpendicular was the perfect way to start a new era of the bands glorious history!!! Some people don't like the current band (I do!!!), but no one can take away from them what they have done since Blackers left. He didn't see it coming, the band did!!! There's absolutely life after Blackmore!
This is for ALL DEEP PURPLE and Rainbow fans. At 1'15 Glover says that DP did six separate tours of the U.S. The 4'45 Mark - is the MOST important par of this interview. Glover (finally) tells us that by 1973 DEEP PURPLE were the biggest group in the world. Glover advises us that Billboard gave Purple plaque's for No.1 Group Sales and Album Sales outselling artists Led Zeppelin and Elvis. 4'45 in '73 DP are confirmed as the BIGGEST band in the World and they literally deteriorate overnight. The most bizarre move in Seventies lore . . . Gillan and Glover are" forced out of Mark II in 1973 BUT joins Rainbow six years later.
I feel so bad for Roger... I can imagine he had a tough time in Purple early MK II, because he`s such a calm & humble person.. Infant terrible, prankster ass hole Blackmore of course had to take advantage of it and saw him as an easy target..
@@DokktorDeth You pervs don't understand that verse. That statement is about perversion of justice. This is reminder to corrupt judges and politicians. Think about it. Not only a great Bass Player but also producer having produced Judas Priest's SIN AFTER SIN as well as Nazareth's early albums from RAZAMANAZ to RAMPANT
Japanese fans rioted after Ritchie Blackmore refused to do an encore! After driving Glover out of DP, Ritchie Blackmore left DP after Glenn Hughes (new bassist) insulted Ritchie's playing. Ritchie also hated the new "funky" sound Glenn Hughes brought to DP. When Ritchie formed Rainbow, he'd audition bass players and tell them "Roger Glover did it this way", causing one potential bassist to tell him GET ROGER GLOVER THEN! LOL! No bassist in Rainbow lasted longer than a year....until Ritchie got Roger to play bass in 1979. Roger played bass in Rainbow until 1984, longer than any other bassist. There was absolutely no reason to ever fire Roger from DP. Ritchie has his whims and chases his tail like a dog. Roger is a nice guy and you can tell he loves what he does, always so happy on stage.
Roger Glover worked with a lot of managing bands as well for the record he signed another big band Nazareth ''Bad Bad Boy'' & ''Razamanaz'' was Roger Glover involved with. I say Roger Glover was as important to Deep Purple as the moon is at night. Then people can have their wits about them. There must always be a goofy person to start the egos on the not so goofy people, If Roger Glover wasn't In deep purple their album deep purple in rock wouldn't sound as naughty as it does.
But without Ritchie nobody would have ever heard of Roger or Ian, Ian and Jon. Ritchie was the man who came up with the bulk of their most recognisable riffs. Sure, he was an antagonistic character, slightly nasty at times, but he was a riff monster, even though he sometimes borrowed ideas (not as much as Page).
It looks like Rodger gets last laugh; meaning that I got see them(deep purple) at fire lake event center in Shawnee, Oklahoma this summer. Give certain credit to Richie for Foundation of purple. However, Steve Morse walks all over blackmore as a guitar player!!!!
I asked this question under part one, but.... When was this made? I suspect it was made around the time of Gillans "Highway Star, a journey in rock" since they have the same narrator voice:-)
Agreed! I'm a big Blackmore fan musically, but what Purple achieved after him is remarkable. Amongst all the great purple albums I still love 'Bananas'.
Nanas was a great return to form after Abandon. Some great tracks, Sun Goes Down, Picture of Innocence, Silver Tongue.... Only thing i dont like is the production. Funny album sleeve.
Of course blackmore was amazing his guitar in smoke on the water was unique and amazing, but I learned something, when a guy is shining like a star it is because of a team behind it, if blackmore was alone doing all by himself he wouldnt get the sucess alone, rainbow was not that sucess.
Do your research, Rainbow was very successful, from 1975 to 1978 with Dio, 1979, with Graham Bonnet, from 1980 to 1984, with Joe Lynn Turner, and from 1995 to 1997 with Doogie White (Stranger in Us All, album, one of their best, you probably never even heard of it) all their shows sold out, all their albums did well, so, for you to say Rainbow was not very successful, means that you're talking out of your ass. Don't confuse facts with your personal opinion.
Before I went to live and work in Kuwait years ago, my neighbour asked me where it was, hinting that it may be near the United States. Odd, I thought, strange woman - big feet, as I recall. When I watched this I was left wondering...where is Wales?
I adore Glover. And the rest of the band were great musicians. However, they were never, ever, ever bigger than Zeppelin. Maybe for 1 yr they sold more records (1973) but they simply cannot compare to the Magic of Zeppelin.
@@NocyMusic Uh, Stairway To Heaven was the most played song in Rock Radio History in the U.S. And I would think the World. Opinions are one thing, but the fact is Zeppelin had 10 "Smoke On The Waters" and was easily the biggest, best band in the World. . . When there was talk of a reunion on 2007/2008 Promoters around the World said "it would be the biggest tour in the history of the world." And, I believe it was about 30 Million people who applied for tickets to see Zep at the O2 Arena in 2007! There's only a handful of people that would even pay to see Deep Purple in concert again. . .There's really no comparison. Zeppelin wins every time.
agree, led zep were bigger in terms of sales, but only in usa. in europe and australia ,even japan, I would say DP were more popular. But, DP after blackmore departed were over. LZ had 5 more years. LZ was a great band, but too americanized and polished
Couldn't care less about zeppelin. And I'm not a metal fan or something, I love classical music, some jazz and certain rock bands. The classic purple, from the 70's ❤

A humble man. Big respect and thanks for the great music down the years.

Absolutely! Great engineer and producer also.
always loved deep purple and what a lovely bloke he is
Bananas was, or is, a great one, yes, and the following tour was absolutely one of the great ones!
I wish they had touched on his career as a producer and his solo album.
I caught two shows on the Perfect Strangers tour and they were great shows, good times.
Roger was evidently the smartest person in the band by a country mile
Seems such an awesome guy roger.
The song at 9:27 is called "haunted" from their studio album Bananas.....just in case anyone wants to know. It's a great song.

I think Rainbow was quite famous in its day. But, by then, rock debauchery had become quite commonplace so it probably went unnoticed.
