1999. Yes, the interviewer is spot on...asks a question...& lets the people actually answer! in full....wow! A few of today's interviewers would do well to watch his style.
This was such a pleasant and relaxed interview. So many times I want to hear a musician or film star speak and they're just constantly cut-off before they can finish answering a question.
John Laws is an intelligent and incitefull interviewer . I saw Deep Purple in Sydney in 1972 and in 1999 . In both cases truly superb live performances. John Laws still has a radio show on 2SM in 2020.
Ian Gillan was fantastic with his solo singing in the Concerto for Group and Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall. This time his charisma was incomporable fabulous.
one of the most intelligent bands of all time. their interviews always interesting. looked it up, 3 months separates roger and ian in age. and this is 25 years ago already. sigh...
Yep, a very respectful, mature and, well, respectful interviewer. He lets them open up, expand and be themselves. More revealing and informative than an hectoring, need, need, need, to know the sh*t and negative stuff type of interview. Well done that man. And G*d bless Ian and Roger.
i like the way British society holds their rock stars in high regard like Americans do with their talentless celebrities. These guys, Brian May , Clapton , Winwood,Page, Jones, Plant , Beck , Jeff Lynne ,Iommi etc actually deserve to have the spotlight on them and have something interesting to offer because theyre talented artists .
Ian articulated the arc of a band’s career from start to finish better than anyone I’ve ever heard, I’m 65 and grew up w these bands. . They’re all very honest. Even Ritchie’s interviews. He says he was moody and it caused problems..
Probably one the most intelligent interviews with these guys. Great sensitive and clever interviewer. From this interview you can suss out that Gillan effectively “sold his soul“, interested in the economic‘s, as Blackmore always said, this coincided with the loss of his talent. But it’s very rare for someone to get such an incredible honesty.
Thank you with all sincerity to Roger and Ian for their candidness. If you like these guys, watch the Jon Lord memorial performance of Hush. Wow. Ritchie would not go for that. He's very private.
Also might add as every one else has I watched the clip in full and yes it was a good interview, around this time it was Purples first visit back to Australia for a while and was able to catch four of these shows around Australia and even then, Steve Morse was really great to meet and talk to , had a blast ,its now 2013 and I have just clocked up my fortieth show,,long live the Purple ..cheers
I wish I would have saved all my ticket stubs,I have about 300 plus and DP was one of my favorite bands at the time ,one of the greatest bands ever, IMO
Yes, we have young folks mimicking that scream to this very day (check out Sina Drums on RUclips), that powerful scream...very powerful, pregnant with significance. Thanks to the band for this fantastic music.
I said that the over production killed music, we went from The Cure and Motorhead recording on a 16 track to Bon Jovi et al on 128 tracks, which has it's place, but if you listen to the old records you can hear all the subtle sounds of the valve amps....etc.....everything has it's place though but it would be nice to have some of the simple back...
Great Interview! Excellent Interviewer, who asks very Poignant Questions! As though they are chatting with an old friend! He goes well below the Surface and asks those questions that you wish you had asked but, didn't think of at the time. Only, Criticism I have is that I don't care for Not letting Ian or Roger finish an Answer! He cuts them off, quite a few times! But, overall an Important Interview! Thanks!
He is a great guitarist with a huge ego. It's too bad he just plays goofy fairs with his wife and not RR. You have to admit, his replacement Steve Morse is no slouch. Guitar player magazine seems to think he is pretty good. To the die hard deep purple fans it's all Ritchie.
Ritchie has had his time, but his best stuff lives on, I love his best stuff. I must be old, I was a die hard Purple fan in the Seventies, but it's RR with Dio, that I just can't stop listening to. Particularly their first album. I worship it!!!
@@arizonaden1 You should watch some more interviews with Ian Gillan and also Richie Blackmore and you will find out that Ian is the one with the ego and Richie is just the one with a difficult character that one has to accept or not.
It takes two to do a meltdown. Blackers were without a doubt a difficult person to deal with, and when him and a guy as Gillan, who didn’t want to let Blackers play the leader of the band, collide sparks will fly.
Enjoyed the interview. Couple of lovely blokes. Plenty of criticism for old "Golden Tonsils" but he's actually very articulate and intelligent. Just a little arrogant sometimes.
"Negative leadership"?! I hardly see someone not telling people what to do and saying what they're not prepared to do as leadership of any kind. It seems more a case of live and let live whilst preserving your sense of integrity. Someone objecting to that would seem to me to be the aggressor in the relationship who calls someone 'difficult' for not falling in with their wishes all the time. As a song writer Blackmore was head and shoulders above them all and they were all better when he was with them, collectively or individually.
Mmmm the Smoke on the Water partial clip is from the DVD - Come Hell or High Water. This amazes me as it is one of the most "telling" concerts. Blackmore is at his worst and best. He plays some phenomenal guitar AND at moments carries on like a . . . pratt. I am a amazed that Gillan says there are (and now 5 years later were) only 5 record companies left in the world. Both Glover and Gillan are really well spoken and I believe . . . honest.SALES FIGURES - I have tried really hard as it is really difficult to get sales figures on DEEP PURPLE but luckily, Glover advises us that they have sold 130 million records. I have heard that DEEP PURPLE sold about 66 million certified copies by April 1976. Keep in mind that Purple split up after 8 years !EXTENDED GUITAR SOLO's - Ian Gillan turns it down for general viewing. Gillan banged a groupie during Ritchie's "unknowable" solo in regards to length. LoL.
One of the things...I found incredible was the bands I auditioned for all had that rebellious and uncooperative attitude before they could play one song together...too busy fighting and being rock stars before they sold a record...it's good to hear I was like a pro sober ready to work and purple said they kept sober for the sake of the music they loved... remember that kids....more like don't forget it....hey u over there no fighting....aahhh put that guitar down...nooooo not the drums again.. Oh fudge
Amazing we had bands at all then, and we certainly don't have any now. The me, my, and I won over we,us, and our! Roger must not have been too miffed at richie, joining rainbow and all. At least they have the band name. Maybe richie will sub for steve sometimes
How come he implied right at the beginning that they had a coke habit with that little gesture? I'm no expert, but I recall Gillan saying they never really took drugs but did drink a lot. EDIT: The guy asks later on and they flat-out say they didn't do drugs...
I'm not real impressed with this interviewer. How can one describe him as "radio legend"? As usual, Glover and Gillan very patient and kind to this guy.
New style of music sounds much better than new genre of music sounds, great interview bar that, angers me when I hear brits in particular using silly french words when this music is rooted in the English language
A last the truth...comes out...Roger about dealing with Ritchie... He never said what we were gonna do he said to them ...what we weren't gonna do or what he wouldn't do.. That's an open window...like that phrase in the movie..if I want your opinion I'll give too u...
I'm always struck by how articulate all the members of Deep Purple are.
It’s a wonder they can hear the questions!
That was a great interviewer , and Ian and Roger responded to considered urbane attitude . Marvellous . 👍🇬🇧
what a GREAT interview from John. Both Roger and Ian did great. I could listen to this again and again.
1999. Yes, the interviewer is spot on...asks a question...& lets the people actually answer! in full....wow! A few of today's interviewers would do well to watch his style.
Totally agree . Get rid of the fluff and re introduce some knowledge and fiber .
It is 2024 and I am still blasting Deep Purple! I bleed purple!!!!
Such a good interview. Grew up with John Laws and didn't realise he would be so gracious to a 'young' rock band. Very articulate dudes.
Very candid, honest, relaxed interview. Gillen/Rogers they were always a team. Even before DP.
Excellent interviewer, very impressed with the way Ian and Roger handled it. Thanks for sharing this.
This was such a pleasant and relaxed interview. So many times I want to hear a musician or film star speak and they're just constantly cut-off before they can finish answering a question.
This is how one interviews bands. Alternatingly light and insightful. Great interviewer
25 years after this interview, they are still making relevant amazing music. Listen to their new record =1
I have always loved and respected these two gentlemen.
John Laws is an intelligent and incitefull interviewer . I saw Deep Purple in Sydney in 1972 and in 1999 . In both cases truly superb live performances. John Laws still has a radio show on 2SM in 2020.
I think you mean 1971 with Free. Randwick Racecourse Sydney.
Ian Gillan was fantastic with his solo singing in the Concerto for Group and Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall. This time his charisma was incomporable fabulous.

Ian ... Najlepszy Wokalista Wszechczasów !!!!
John Laws is an amazing interviewer. He listens and doesn't endlessly interrupt his guests

Right on! I could listen to interviews like this for hours..

I could listen to another hour of this, very enjoyable.

Great great men, great great people and musicians.

Roger Glover At 3:50 " before Rock & Roll , life was pretty boring." How true is that.
Really good interview.
I have to say I really enjoy watching Ritchie's performances. He has that slightly-buzzed look in his gaze. So cool.
an amazing interview !
Ian Gillan has such daggy casual tastes in shirts for a true heavy rock god!
Yes, we have young folks mimicking that scream to this very day (check out Sina Drums on RUclips), that powerful scream...very powerful, pregnant with significance. Thanks to the band for this fantastic music.
Love Ian Gillan
Great interviewer, who doesn´t interrupt each and every 20 secs...
Spot on. American interviewers cut in so much. Some of them should watch an interview like this and watch a quality interviewer like John Laws

Great job fun thanks guy's
What a great interviewer....
John Laws... I need more of that kind....
That was a very good interview
Super nice! Thank you!
DP Rocks......So Much Talent ! \m/
So good interview, finally an interesting intervju.
Great interviewer. Came prepared with the history of the band and improvised interesting questions instead of just reading off a list.
There were actually three ORIGINAL members of the band missing as Rod Evans and Nick Simper played on the first three albums but what the hell...
Great band great music great lads
Great Honest interview.
totally authentic dudes
Great interview.
Seem like nice guys. I always liked Purple. The first real band for me.
Met them before Glasgow show in 2013...all nice guys. Roger Glover is pretty funny.
Gillan y Glover... dos TIPAZOS 👍👍👍🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
Such sensible and well ordered fellas. Shame about Ritchie with his chip, but he is still one of the worlds greatest guitarists.

Cool dudes right there. Excellent discussion. Host was very good too.
Great interview
Respect your work. Epic. ♦️♥️☘️✌️
what a terrific interview !!!
An excellent interview, and insight into the music industry. On the music industry's side, they take bets on both winners and losers.
great interviewer.
I went to this concert in 99 great concert.
Wow! excellent👍 Ian Gillian's short analysis of big business, record companies and the shady side! 😅
Excellent interviewer
Good interview. Not everyone can do that.
Love is all (:
Honest guys.
THE SCREAM!
LONG LIVE DEEP PURPLE!!!M.O'B
Самые лучшие!
What year was this? Must have been soon after Ritchie left. Great interviewer. This guy is a pro.
99 I believe
Enjoyed the interview. Couple of lovely blokes.
Plenty of criticism for old "Golden Tonsils" but he's actually very articulate and intelligent. Just a little arrogant sometimes.
scoldedcat he was known as silver throat and is possibly the most in arrogant person in rock history..not many as brilliant and humble as Ian Gillan
@@rubberneckk Yes, well I wasn't talking about Ian Gillan. John Laws, the interviewer, is known as Golden Tonsils.
scoldedcat I stand corrected..golden tonsils and silver throat in the same room! Ironic 😁 rock on!
That's lawsie a radio ledgend

Scream, Ian, scream! LOL
Two absolute legends just chewing the fat with another legend.
Glover is funny regarding Blackmore. He played in Rainbow together with Blackmore???
Yes Blackmoore told him his services were no longer required in Deep purple then he hired him for Rainbow
was actually a cool interview where they didn't have to talk about the usual things
Yes

Sales figures, I believe that I bought ten albums with Deep purple between 77 and 84, and I’m sure that I’m not the only one to to that.
The episode 6 guys
wasn't on dvd before? bonus material from "live in Australia '99" or "new live and rare vol.I or II" ?
One of the things...I found incredible was the bands I auditioned for all had that rebellious and uncooperative attitude before they could play one song together...too busy fighting and being rock stars before they sold a record...it's good to hear I was like a pro sober ready to work and purple said they kept sober for the sake of the music they loved... remember that kids....more like don't forget it....hey u over there no fighting....aahhh put that guitar down...nooooo not the drums again..

John laws

Lol, yeah I think he's been in at the Just For Men hair dye a bit too much.
Gillan answers generally, not specific. 8:30 Ritchie: "draws a parallel" Zzzzz
But 16:40 Gillan sees the light. "I suddenly realized..." What a pity.
my favor line 9:55 🍻
A last the truth...comes out...Roger about dealing with Ritchie...

Has IG been using shoe polish?
ROGER bajo perfil
Is the guy with the gray hair their dealer
1999.
The interviewer looks like a cross between Richard Burton, Barry Humphries and Tom Wilkinson.
THEY ARE SO FUCKING LUCKY MORSE NEEDED AN EASY SIDE GIG
Jimmy had short hair at the very same time Ian did, 1999. It is as if they were not themselves anymore.
