If the world needed only one bass player it would be Mr. Victor Wooten. The Best in the world. So happy to be able to hear him play. Must hear him live. OMG! What he did with a broken G string. Pure Genius. Linda S. English.
for all the haters talking about his songwriting and simplicity..i can tell you first hand from being at his bass camp and taking lessons with him, he is so far beyond simplistic. You have no idea how much more he is doing that most people can't even count and understand. Keep practicing and quit judging.
It's a tenor bass tuned ADGC.The strings are ADGC from a six string set,the truss rod is adjusted for correct tension and the nut replaced for one that accepts them.
i remember seeing Wooten in 2015 i think it was and when he played this song i was legit crying lol. i took a girl with me to the show and she was like "are you ok? lol"
I personally think this is good music. I am a big fan of a lot of his solo compositions and not because they are chopy, but because of the emotional content I hear behind it. I certainly didn't come to this video for his chops. This is just musical, relaxed playing to me. I Love his improvisation, as well as how he plays with others in a support situation. But I'm not trying to get you to like him. That's up to you. I, for one, respect Victor as a musician and find it to be enjoyable listening.
hi vinio! i remember watching on dvd yeaaaars ago, and it was more than 10 minutes long - if you could upload the rest of the solo it would be awsome ! Appreciate it :))
I love the fact he is nearly in tears with emotion... Sign of a great musician that he can get so into what he is playing..... Also, are they piccolo strings? The G looks awful thin...
Lennart Gutruf Umut Aksoy but this version is better than the album version. I think there was an DVD release of bdays 2002... may you get a copy in eBay...
that sounds about right, thank you I I read that somone said drop d, and that was a weird way to play it but thank you, that tuning sounds about right. but if that's piccolo, what's tenor? I thought tenor was ADGC
Not to say your wrong or anything. But when I played it in ADGC, the chords came out right and were practically the same as the ones shown while he was playing. But, the GDGC tuning has got me interested :K
@fishooke true people post alot of his real fast stuff on youtube but if you have ever been to one of his live shows you know that isn't the case. just listen to the rest of the album this song is from and you know he has a much more soulful side to his music.
@fishooke I don't think you understand funk. Either you got it (and appreciate it) or you don't. It has a certain feeling that sounds like showing off to those who don't understand it, but has profound meaning to those who do.
@jtrompwns Well think about it...he's in a room full of Bassists and they want him to do his "Douchey" playing style but he chose to play a beautifully simple song to solo over. You think it's complicated but a lot consider this soulful.
this sounds like a porn beat, nah just kiddin, beutiful bass playin. i love it, so much rythem in thee air on victor wooten, beutiful playin, great job victor wooten. your so good, that words dont do it.
? There is so much more to this than scale wanking. His phrasing is great and the dynamic changes are so well placed. It's all a matter of opinion, but personally I think this is beautiful playing.
I still dig Vic's playing more than Jaco, even though I have listened to a lot from both of them. There are times when I get into Rocca Prestia, Pino Palladino, Sharay Reed, Hubert Eaves III... it really just depends on who you're grooving to more at the time. No matter what the argument, music will always come down to personal taste. Remove all the status from both players and they are just good musicians. Who you like more is up to you :)
I see that you're a Jaco fan. I Love Jaco and he's up in my favorites, but I Love Victor too. You and I both know there are a lot of WAY less talented cats out there than Victor. Even if he's not your favorite, the man has chops. Just because what he plays here is relatively simple doesn't make it bad music. The fretboard isn't everything, sometimes you need to let it breath! I'm not interested in getting involved in a big youtube argument, but I wanted to put my two cents in.
Wooten is more melodic in his playing. Don't get me wrong, i could walk down the street and sing Havona or Teen Town (which i do do by the way XP), but Wooten's playing in that fashion is more simplistic. Wooten has one of the craziest techniques, but he pretty much always makes it musical. I'm definitely not trying to dis Jaco! I love the both of them, I've learned a lot from the both of them and I'll enjoy their works for years to come. But I'm just trying to showcase the other point of view.
And again, we disagree. First of all, the two plays music that is entirely different - Wooten playing this... funk, blue grass,R&B,jazzy thing, and Jaco playing straight up fusion. so from that perspective of course their music will be different. Furthermore, Jaco's solos are more like a brass' (like a sax or something). That's his innovation in bass soloing - he brought the bass into the world of fusion with the importance like the rest of the main instruments.
I completely disagree, I find bass being a VERY melodic instrument on it's own. It has a warmth and depth that other instruments don't have, like a guitar for example. I get why you dig Jaco so much, I really really do, and in fact I was at the same place as you once. My musical growth led me to love jazz and that's still what I dig and study the most. But a further step in musical growth is to go back a little bit and enjoy the simplistic beauty in just a few notes or a pentatonic scale=]
As a guy who transcribed a LOT of Jaco's work, you know what? he's just as repetitive. they're just completely different. They're both melodic in different ways.
Ari's gotta have the most beautiful eyes...
This is the most soulful tune I've ever heard but also beautifully played well done victor just cannot stop listening to it
I personally believe
this is one of the best tenor bass songs.
Now i get sick for 4 months and you succesfully make me so emotional and i was crying a lot!! Thank you victor wooten! ❤
It's a cold sunday morning and this beautiful sound just makes me cry... out of happyness !

I saw God today and He plays the Bass. Bless you Victor Wooten

I draw more inspiration from him then I do guitar players (I of course am a guitar player) LOVE YOU VIC!
Even thought it's out of tune it's still beautiful
Who's here 2024... 💕
Respect 🙏🙏🙏
music isn't a competition, guys. Of course Jaco is a genious, but this does not change Wooten's geniality.
The nut has smaller slots cut in it for the smaller gauge strings, string spacing is the same.

3:34 pure feeling and talent!

The G string is always the thinnest on a bass.
@@susiemuirhead561 reply because why not, it's a tenor bass
A-D-G-C That's The Tuning
Can i buy this masterpiece in good quality?
checkout soulcircus album
Lennart Gutruf Umut Aksoy but this version is better than the album version. I think there was an DVD release of bdays 2002... may you get a copy in eBay...
most beautiful bass song ever...epic
that sounds about right, thank you I I read that somone said drop d, and that was a weird way to play it but thank you, that tuning sounds about right. but if that's piccolo, what's tenor? I thought tenor was ADGC
Slappin da Bass mahn
Yeah... I was there...
i cried
@berostv hi man... sorry but i dont have this DVD =(

You think it's complicated but a lot consider this soulful.
might I ask what the difference in nut is? slot files or otherwise?
@jtrompwns what about this song? sure he has some layers playing but this is about as simple as it gets, if you want to pull off a solo bass show.
Its his Tenor Bass so ADGC but for this song he has it tuned GDGC because it makes the chords easier to access.
Actually the low string is tuned down a whole step to make the chord fingering easier on a bass, so it's GDGC.
Words failed so this had to b made to express the unspeakable
this sounds like a porn beat, nah just kiddin, beutiful bass playin. i love it, so much rythem in thee air on victor wooten, beutiful playin, great job victor wooten. your so good, that words dont do it.
what is he tuned to...?
@kluper18
100% right....i'm in heaven...
I think the best apart about this song isn't the actual song, but the bass tone.
? There is so much more to this than scale wanking. His phrasing is great and the dynamic changes are so well placed. It's all a matter of opinion, but personally I think this is beautiful playing.

Rex Ross
To clarify, I said “what he plays HERE is relatively simple”, meaning relative to what he usually plays.
@MrStayCoul c'est clair .
3:35-4:00 IS SO SICK
3:01 wooten's tears :)
@carpinabass =HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOY VICTOR IDOL TIKA
Wooten is more melodic in his playing.

@Requeium Key of Wooten
GDGC, you must drop your 4th string 1 tone to play that, otherwise you'll destroy your hand stretching them and you'll miss the low G that he has :)
This is how babies are made...
dude clarke's neck is not shorter:D its just that he is realllllyy tall

he's usually tuned his bass to drop D (DADG) ;) here sounds like drop D for me
Doesn't it look like he's directly looking into his own girl's eyes? ;)
I completely disagree,
