Building a Forgotten Mazda RX7 EP. 5 Painting using Subaru Colors

- Опубликовано: 15 май 2024
- Huge steps on the 1993 Mazda RX7 today, finally getting some paint onto this car. This is my first time painting with an actual legit set up so I do not have any experience going into this. But if I can figure it out anyone can do it. we are painting the RX7 Aspen white from Subaru (Paint Code 51E). Using white should make painting a little bit easier as it is typically an easier color to paint. But the results came out AMAZING on this!

I felt that frustration when that cup fell 😭
It happened twice lmao I only caught one of em on video 💀
Next episode: So I decided to paint the body. 👀.
If so, I believe in you! 👏
I’m debating trying it 😂😅
@@Smeedia do it yourself mate !!
@@Smeedia ngl, itd be good anyway and then you can be like all those old ass dudes that say they did it themselves. Come onnnnnnnn Tanner
@@Smeedia you got this dude!
2:30 my guy you never cease to amaze me, picking up proper body practices is not easy. When you said if you think it’s clean, it’s not… that is a rule to live by when prepping for any paint work, but the way you handled the underside and undercoating was amazing. You just learn more and more and more, I was a A.S.E. certified paint and refinish person many years ago. It was of course before RUclips but damn man you are like a sponge, you watch and learn and then do it just as well. I hope this project turns out the way I hope and believe you can do to it, just take your time and make it right the first time. And if not do it again, cause I know you will get it perfect
Ima give it a go and try to do it myself, worst case scenario we just try again. But super happy with how things have come out so far 🔥💪 just gotta keep practicing
When you dropped your bucket from the table I literally just said “he has no counter space!” Right before it happened.
Lmao exactly 😂 made sure that fable was as clear as could be before doing the base 😅
as an aspen white bugeye owner it is by far the best looking white on any car imo I'm so glad you decided to go with this color
Aspen white is just 🤌🤌🤌
Love this series, the rx7 is definitely a dream car for a full restoration like this.
Something I’ve wanted to do for a hot while 🥳 perfect car to bring back 🔥
Oh no... not, not this again. 14:30 my entire soul crumbles as I hear the song that has haunted me in RUclips videos since the dark ages. I thought I had escaped, but alas, I have learned there is no escape. And despite this fun video, I am a broken man.
It’s so hard to find decent music that’s copy right free 😂 I’ll remove that one from the list so it can die in peace 😂
@@Smeedia all the love. Great video otherwise! The car's gonna be so awesome.
You’re going to have to show all your future projects the same love!
Right?! We’ve set the bar now for the standard 😂
BMW fanboy here, I would've went Alpine White, but that Aspen White looks so good! I don't think it's your first time painting.. Came out 10x better than you probably expected, tackle the body yourself! Learning quick with small mistakes you made in the engine bay, and you have the whole interior to catch on with too! You got this, it's lookin fire so far!!! The extra bit of clear coat is good for full deep paint correction, will leave it with tons of life left to it!
Ended up buying an inflatable paint booth so I’m going to try and paint the whole thing 😅
After getting the feel for the paint gun it got a bit easier. I was just stressing getting any type of runs in the paint 😅
This was sick! Paint it you got this!!!
Ordered an inflatable paint booth to give it a go myself 🙌
Gonna have a full do it yourself shop going on soon. That bay came out 🤌🔥
I bought a paint booth so we’re going to try to do everything 😅
The seam sealer makes it looks straight out off a comic book! Looking like it's going to be fire!
Excited for how it’s going to turn out 🥳
bro. you are living the dream. i know its a ton of work, but i mean, come on. you have grown so much in the last couple years. seriously. congratulations on your success and i hope it only keeps coming.
also i really think this rx7 is one of your milestone builds. you cant sell this thing man, its yours.
I won’t sell the FD, with the amount of work I’m Putting into this thing and that I’ve anted one for so long. This one’s a keeper for me 🥳
Good choice on going with the Aspen White. If you still want a little bit of that metallic look you can always add some flakes. Although that does add to the complexity for getting the paint to lay down evenly across the whole surface.
For my first time I’ll leave the flake out, the aspen white is just 🤌🤌🤌
Tanner gonna be the Kendigit of the JDM world!!!!😄😄you got this!!!
🫡🫡🫡🫡
Damn but that Aspen White came out so clean!
Right?! Excited to see the entire car in this color 😍
Just got off of work and I get a sweet RX7 video. A nice way to end the day
Let’s goooo 🥳🥳🥳
Hands down. My favorite build from you Tanner! Love the Subie builds, but THE RX7 content is 🤌🏼
Sameee, I love my Subarus but an old RX7 does it for me 🔥
Wow broski. You wrapped the whole shop. That’s crazy. But I’m with you tho!! Gotta do what we gotta do! 🙌🏽
Ought a paint booth so we shouldn’t have to wrap the whole shop again 😅
Great job tanner, u got this, u can definitely handle the rest of the car, looking forward to seeing how it turns out
Ordered a paint booth to try and give it a go myself 🥳
@@Smeedia appreciate the reply tanner, have a great weekend
Wake up everyone new Smeedia RX-7 content just dropped.
❤❤❤
With more air gun time, you can add body painting to your engine building expertise. Looks amazing for a rookie. If anything, most people try to put too much paint and clear on. Congrats 👏
Thanks Brad 🥳 after getting runs in the primer I was a bit stressed with the clear. But seeing how it all lays down it all makes WAY more sense down 🔥
Paint looking sweet. That new front bumper is a big choice. To each their own. Keep up the awesome work
The 99 spec bumpers look so good to me 😍 excited to see this thing come together 🎉
Nicely done Tanner! That has to feel so good to accomplish something like that for the first time.
Always 🥳 going to try and paint the whole car now 😅
Tanner, you make me want to restore a car. I've been debating it for a while but seeing you do it has given me the itch again lol.
Do itttt 👀👀👀👀
You totally got this man, dont overthink it too much! A couple of things, the green painters tape sticks alot better than the blue, if you do decide to paint it yourself DA the body with 600 grit you dont need to go any more abrasive than that since the factory paint is really good condition. Reminder that plastic will almost never match with the rest of the car, it may turn out a little lighter or darker and if you want to do some test panels be very mindful of the layers and gun settings. Its always recommended to paint it all once to make sure everything is cohesive but sometimes you cant. Bake time is major, you dont have an actual paint booth so get a few heaters in there to make sure it all cures evenly. Everything else I feel like you can figure out on your own if you havent already, just to throw my opinion in, to save a little bit of time and money not every surface needs to be clear coated, especially parts you wont see you can do just a base coat on the interior and some of the structural parts that are covered up by the body panels!
i bought an infltable paint booth so I'm all in for trying to paint it myself. Snagged a 3M DA to make the exterior sanding go WAY quicker and smoother.
the front and rear bumpers are fiberglass, not sure how much that'll toss a wrench in things.
I have a couple Radiator style heaters and a propane heater I can let run to help cure it as it all dries.
For painting everything since I am limited on space would it make more sense to paint the doors on car vs off?
@@Smeedia yea even if fiberglass, pretty much non metal, will have a slight color mismatch, unless you do a ton of spray our cards and mixing ratios. You could also get lucky and it all just happens to match!
Id say for what youre trying to accomplish, painting the doors off the car would be the safer option, this way you know youll have full coverage in all the jambs and the front side of the door/hinge area
I already love this car so much
I can’t wait to see this thing fully together 🎉
Came out amazing Tanner! Im super pumped for this build and as always thankful for your inspiration and motivation to encourage others to tackle more stuff on their own.
Thanks buddy 🥳 stoaked on how it came out. Ordered an inflatable paint booth so figured we would try to tackle painting the entire thing ourselves. Can’t be that hard right? 😅
As always when painting literally anything like this, you don't see any progress until the second coat. I was waiting for sure. Turned out good in the end though, not bad for a first time job.
Pretty happy with how it all came out, definitely learned some things for the next round of painting 🔥🙌
Aspen White is top tier 🤌🏻🤌🏻 an 05 blob eye STI in Aspen White with the gold OEM BBS wheels is perfection 😩
Cant wait to see how this turns out
Aspen whites always been my favorite white color 🤌 it’s the perfect shade 🔥
I think this is my favorite build right now. You should definitely paint your own car. The six P's Proper Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Stoked on this dude, your channel is gonna blow up with content like this.
I’m just in it for a good time 🥳
I think I’m going to try to paint it after doing the bay, I’ll do some easier panels to start like the fenders and go from there. But pretty stoaked with how the bay came out 🥳
Thats a lot of P's and I love it. I wish I could have my own lift to do work like this. its just way too hard to do something like this on the ground.
I agree.. paint it yourself. Your attention to detail is superb. @smeedia
so clean, love the white!
Can’t wait to see the whole thing painted in this white 😍
Engine bay looks amazing. 👍👍
Thank you 🥳 came out better than I thought it would 🔥
Aspen white, huh, nice base coat for "copper."😉 It will look fantastic, and I hope to make the trek to SEMA from Cincy. Can't wait!
Hoping the rest of it comes out just as good 🎉
You always impress me with the quality of the work you do. Always a pleasure to watch.
Looking good so far
😎👍🏻👍🏻
TOMMMMM!!!!!
I was sitting there staring at it, thinking you should paint the whole thing, and you bring it up lol
You did great, the color is gonna be so awesome. Definitely try the bumpers and fenders! There may be a plot twist coming up where you're just as good at body work as you are mechanical!
I’m going to give it a whirl, worst case sensations just have it re painted but I’m totally down to give it a try 🔥🙌
If ya overspray the rhinoliner, just remask on the newer paint and reapply a thin coat to rhino liner. Easy.
That’s the game plan 👌🔥
One day I'll have a lift with my own rx7 on it. Loving the build man
Yeah man stoked, see if you can just rent some time in a paint booth for the exterior and do it yourself!
Think ima give it ago myself 💪🙌
My day when smeedia uploads 📈📈
🥳🥳🥳
Great job!!! 🍻 looks so RAD!!!
Thank you 🥳
Looking good I know I was so stressed when I painted my 93 Integra back in the day even though I did the paint job while taking an adult ROP automotive paint class. My Integra came out great painted it Bright Aqua Blue Metallic a mid 90’s Corvette color which was really awesome Aqua during overcast days and Bright blue on sunny days…
That sounds like a sweeet color 🔥🤌 it’s definitely nerve racking going into it your first time 😅
The RX7 in pristine condition are worth big $$$ it was a wise choice to build a SEMA quality FD. Cash in the bank Tanner.
I consider the RX7 an investment car at this point 😅
I love rotors so much. Like a 13b with a gt55 sounds so absolutely wicked at 14,000 rpm. Although it only makes 350 hp it’s 300 from 4,000krpm on making it the perfect drift car haha
That all just sound so good, with the set up we have we should be able to make some decent power with this thing 🔥
Not bad, not bad at all. That’s coming from someone that’s spayed professionally for 13 years. 😊
Practice makes perfect 😅 going to keep practicing. Ordered a inflatable paint booth so I’m going to try the entire car 🔥
The only advice I would give is it’s all about consistency. Be more consistent with your spray patterns.
Aspen White with the classic Spanish gold for wheels. I'm doing the similar thing on my 04 WRX wagon
Spanish gold for the calipers could look pretty sweet on this thing 👀
Looking good bro! I’m totally down to watch you paint it!
I think ima try to paint it myself 🙌🔥
You gotta love on the edge with the clear…
After seeing how the clear lays down it makes a bit more sense for how much to spray 🔥
@@Smeedia you can go heavier then you might think. You’ll probably find where the edge is. We all do eventually.. mad props for doing it yourself though. Keep it up my dude
that DOES look so fn good!!
Right?! Came out better than I thought 😍
White is a solid choice. Not always a fan of white but on RX-7s it’s a favorite. White, yellow or blue.
I’m a sucker for white RX7s, can’t go wrong with it 🔥
If you take your right hand and make the "hang loose" sign, the distance from the tip of your thumb to the tip of your pinky is about how far away you gun tip should be from your panel
You need to sloooow your sweeping motion down and make long sweeps
When you let off The trigger at the end of the sweep don’t let all the way off. Let up to wear the air is still flowing but the product isn’t. Then squeeze all the way as you’re starting your next pass
If that makes sense
Will do🫡 when I paint the interior next I’ll give that a try. Going to attempt to paint the entire car so any tips are definitely welcome
@@Smeediagood deal. I'm sure you'll to fine. Im a machinist now but when i was younger i went to trade school for autobody repair and technology then worked in a body shop for a while but wasn't make any money and the benefits sucked
I'm still glad i learned it though because it allows me to paint my own racecars and project cars 🤷🏼♂️
As always, you’re doing a brilliant job, but I am gonna give you a little tip that’s gonna help you loads at the moment. You’re holding the compressor pipe with your left hand and the gun with your right hand but the compressor pipe is in front of you and you’re spending more time concentrating on where this pipes going to be , what I suggest that you do if you put the pipe behind you, still holding the pipe with your left hand and the gun with you right? But you will find that feed in the pipe round you will come naturally not only that you’ll be able to control the gun a lot better and not have to worry about the pipe hitting anything, believe me it will become natural the minute you do it ,
Go for the rest 👍👍
Bought a paint booth so we going to try 😅
Don't doubt yourself. Everyone over sprays the first few dozen times. Pretty soon it will be just like rebuilding a ej for you. Do that in your sleep 😂😂
Lmao right?! I think I’ll try painting it myself 🔥
@@Smeedia Just do it
Light as a feather gonna be faster than ever!
Thing will scoot 🚗 💨
I hope you do sound deadening for the interior. Screw light weight, it'll be amazing to drive and you'll still get all the good sounds
I might, haven’t decided yet if I wanna do it or not 👀
@@Smeedia you won't regret it if you do
Wooo!!
🥳🥳🥳
Looking good bro ❤

good job man 👍💪
Thanks dude 🥳
Great work man! Well worth the effort
Thank you! Pretty happy with the results for my first time 😅
Could the paint/body shop shave off the number plate mount on the front bumper?
@@bad_puppy_6740it could be shaved, debating doing that 😅
Go for it! It’ll look sooo smooth
The “dull” clear isn’t not going heavy enough on the clear I painted my gc and did 5 coats of clear and it did the same thing on the doors. From what I found it was from fish eye but maybe you’re having the same issue.
I had that on the shock towers as well, had a buddy of mine come down and he was telling me it was from me sweeping too fast. Slowed down in the shock towers and fixed the issue. Could be speed of sweeping as well 🫡
I would use duct tape first on the wheel wells then masking tape to that or better yet! Those magnet strip pads orielys has for free those would work perfect too. Nice job on the paint. Lookin good.
The magnets are a good idea! Paint came out better than I was expecting 🥳
@Smeedia ya it's looking really good. I did paint and body for 13 yrs man and it's hard work for sure nothing easy about it.
So, if you don't want/need the plate bracket on the bumper, and you don't want to remove it yourself, have the body shop take it out prior to paint. You're there spending the money anyways. 😉
It’s a fiberglass bumper so I presume it wouldn’t be too hard to remove from it 😅
Not "heavier" my man on the clear, a bit slower. You move sweep a bit quick.
I’ll slow down a bit. 🫡 I was just nervous of getting runs since the clear was so thick 😅
How slow and fast you move is directly related to how much material is coming out of the gun.
@@petedavis9935 True. Just based on what I was seeing he was moving a couple inches a second too quickly.
@@Smeedia Ya did good. Painting is not something that comes out perfect for a first try. It takes a bit of practice and experience. That's why I look for the squirreliest painter I can find with gray hair... cause they been painting for a while.🤣
Well done :)
Thank you 🥳🥳🥳
Very nice! Glad it's turning out the way you want it! I'd be curious to know what "they'll" charge to fix your mistakes if you decide to give the whole car a go and decide it's not working out?
I’m full on for giving the whole car a go 😅
People “fix things” then Tanner fixes things!
Trying to do things the right way 🔥🫡
@@Smeedia No doubt new industry standard fixes!!
You can easily do the body.
Looks like you got your gun dialed toward the end, it was a little weak on the paint volume for a bit there. Id skip wet sanding the primer and just lay the color thick enough and with enough layers to cover it all up.
On the body, lay the clear down super thick and sand out any runs. Your jaw will drop the first time you wet out a high quality clear coat and buff it real good.
Now i want to strip my car back down and make it green lmfao
I ordered an inflatable paint booth so I’m going to go for it and just do it all 😅
Once I started to get the feel for it, it was not too bad. And will do! I was stressing getting runs in anything more than I should have 😂
Have watched many of your videos but is this your first time painting? Two key notes stick with the green tape , also first coat light is alright once it starts getting tacky second coat thicker less runs . Great content as always . Also what size tip do you use . When I painted cars I used 1.5 primer ,1.4 base, and a 1.3 clear
For tip size I’m just following what the product states to use 🫡 the blue tape wasn’t working all too well 😅 I’ll use the rest of what I’ve it and swap for green 🎉tape
Dope! I just missed out for first comment because i was driving... 😢
Better late than never 😮💨🫶
That front license plate area is begging for a stealth oil cooler... like a louvered RX 7 logo
That would be kinda cool 😅 with the rear brace though one wouldn’t fit 😅
@Smeedia ah... rats... then shave it off and bondo the heck out of it!
DOPE!!!!!
🙌🙌🙌
Keeping the floor wet legit brilliant 👏
Paint it yourself. Wet sand and time will fix it.
It turned white!! gg
Eyyyyyy!!!! 😂🙌
This vid will be lit!! You deserve all the legendary vehicles, what do you think of acuras? Where is the impreza coupe at?
I like the RSXs 👀 it’s in another overflow unit I have 👌
That front plate mount is such an eyesore. Is there an OEM bumper without it? Or do you have any top notch bodyman that can shave that off and make it look perfect??
Nice job bro, once you get the base coat on clean you’re good. If you have runs or orange peel in the clear you can always knock it down with 1500, finish with 2000 & compound / polish out. As long as you don’t burn through the clear you’re good. You could always 1200 wet a panel you’re not happy with & re-clear over the top.
Good to know 🔥 I bought a paint booth so I’m going to try my hand at painting the entire car 😅
Tell me how I knew you were gonna spill that paint mix shit before you did lol
Why didn’t you warn me 😂😅
@Smeedia ....I swear I thought it would be funny if you said that too. No bs. 😂 Tanner are you just predictable or?
If you think your going to paint more cars in the future just get big sheets of plastic to hang on the walls above your equipment then when you paint you roll the plastic down that’s what I did back in the day
I ordered an inflatable paint booth last night so we shall see how well it works 😅
Looking awesome. Maybe i missed it in the video, but why are you mopping so much ?
Just keeping the floors wet, helps to keep down any dirt or dust that may come up when spraying 🫡
@@Smeedia ohhhh ! Good thinking ! That's a nice truck I didn't think of that. Congrats ! Go for gold painting the panels worst case scenario you just have a pro re do them like you planned.
I like what I’m seeing
🥳🥳 it’s getting there m, excited to see it all one color 😅
surprised you prefer aspen white to CWP
The CWP looks fantastic but it’s so hard to paint. Opted for something a bit easier for me being my first time 😅
How many rolls have tape have you gone through in the last 2 weeks?
I think 5 now 😂
Awesome job dude ❤ I'd say paint another full car just not this sema build
I’m going to try and give it a whirl myself, I don’t imagine it should be too hard to do 😅
I’d use the KBD bumper as a test piece, no reason to paint the stuff your going to use cause if you end up not liking it you don’t have to sand everything back down and waste that much effort
I would but the KBD is polyurethane and is a tea beotch to paint compared to the OE panels 👀
Have you ever seen the video for smack my bitch up by the prodigy, when you were mixing the primer it made me think of that
I know the song but haven’t seen the video 😂
@@Smeedia it’s all pov of a we’ll say interesting night
Firstly you absolutely should paint it yourself. Mostly don't paint the interior. Just put a nice interior back in it and save the hassles.
I just bought an inflatable paint booth so we are going to try 😅🔥
Take your time spraying man
My first time 😅 I’ll slow down a bit. I was worried about runs. After seeing how it lays down it makes more sense now
Looking for some help. I just bought a 2015 WRX Limited with 180k miles. Looking to follow in your footsteps at start building up the mods. I have already put in the IAG AOS and then the Cat converter gave me a code. Day1 of asking Smeedia to paint the rx7 championship yellow.
you should definitely try to paint the whole car yourself!! worst case scenario you get it repainted🤷♂
Very true, I think I’m down to just try the whole shebang 🤌
You should really shave the plate on the bumper imo
Debating it 👀👀
just paint the whole car bud you know you wanna
Ordered an inflatable paint booth to give it a whirl 😅
idk what they were smoking in the 90s. for being sooooo damn good with curves and sexy cars, they shoulda known better tehn to integrate the front license plate brackes into the bumpers. tumors.. the Z32 did this as well with the jspec front. i have to chop and shave mine. only and i mean only major design flaw of these historic monsters
pro tip: turn the car inside out for easier access to the interior. For real though, RIP your back and knees, good luck!
I’ll try this 😅🔥
Love the color but God damn it the background music I hate it that's the same one my land rover training classes uses
lol I’ll use different music next time 😅 been trying to find things that aren’t the same songs I always use 😅
@@Smeedia haha it's not that big of a deal I just hear it and it gives me PTSD lol 😂😂
Wind the fan in a bit no need to have it that big when doing tricky spots
Still learning and playing with the knobs. I’ll adjust them a bit more when going into tighter areas 🫡
Hey Im about to get an owl tatted on my back tomorrow and I just noticed the owl on ur forearm that's shit is sick? Any symbolism?
Dude!!! Have a go at painting your self what’s the worst that can happen watch homebuilt by jeff Porsche he had some issues but worked it out. FK it just do it!!!
Ordered an inflatable paint booth so we’re going to give it a whirl ourselves 🥳
