@@ReturningSunn ikr!! I loved how they portrayed the change happening in Phos too. I haven't read the Manga yet but I've seen some spoilers around her transformations and I'd love to see how they depict it and how it happens through animation. Then again I may be biased, I'm an animator
Land of the Lustrous became my favorite manga replacing Pandora Hearts that was on this spot for many years. This mangas are very different in their settings, but they both gave me similar vibes
Oh my gosh pandora hearts was one of my first manga and i love it so much! So few people know about it, and I’ve been trying to get people around me to read it for years to no avail
I agree that there are several parallels between AOT and HNK, especially as far as their protagonists go. Both are tragic stories where the protagonists make difficult choices in trying circumstances when faced with extinction from an enemy they know little about. Where HNK truly shines is in Phos's character development and their believable choices given what they know and have experienced at any given point. Eren has some character development but he rejects it at the end to stay true to his true nature. Eren's choices are IMO less relatable and further, it is not clear how much choice he had at all after a point given the time loop dynamics in AOT. Some would argue that in a comparison between the two, most mystery elements and plot reveals in AOT are done better. (e.g., the basement reveal) Also, the story in AOT has more moving parts and the narrative weaves a more complex world to Isayama's credit. Personally, I am a fan of the "simple story, complex characters" paradigm and thus, I favor HNK over AOT.
Top manga of all time, in my opinion, thank you for making this, I am commenting in order for this video to receive more attention, in turn bringing more people to the manga :))
It actually took me until like Ch 67ish for me to differentiate the gems so you did so much of a better job because of how hard it is in the early parts of the manga (which thankfully the anime makes easier). The animation at 6:28 was super clean I loved seeing that amazing work!
I'm surprised you didn't mention "Steven Universe" since both shows are about a Gem race. This looks very interesting and I'm going try both the manga and the anime. I really enjoyed "Steven Universe," and "Lustrous/Houseki no Kuni" looks like a great way to continue getting my gem-fix. LoL
I liked Steven Universe as well, but other than the characters being gem people, there's really no other similarities. Still, you'll probably like HNK! I can't imagine anyone not liking it, if they give it a chance. It's just phenomenal.
@@SableWindPho’s journey made me think of the (tragically shortened) sequel series. Except Phos didn’t have a proper support system and actually did what Steven failed to do in Futures finale.
Houseki no Kuni was my first anime ever watched and I honestly couldnt be happier youtube reccomended it to me that one time this is a masterpiece and yes I agree that it feels like Attack on Titan but written better Phos is the Eren that the aot fandom thinks eren is
5:15 - no, you’re not the only one. At the time of writing this, I am caught up with Berserk and have completed Attack on Titan and after reading HnK, the similarities and significance of the Phos’ self-destructive tendencies to the plot of the story immediately reminded me of Guts and Eren
hnk slams for real, it's so good watching the transformation of the characters over the series and their ideologies clash leading to 'arc climaxes' I'm dying waiting for the next chapter istg
LETS GOOOOOOO more land of the lustrous content!!! (very good review, and so happy I watched this because nobody else has been talking about this show at all (or in depth like this) in my friend circle lol)
-warning: thematic spoilers? I guess?- I very much agree on your take on the parallels with houseki no kuni and attack on titan. Both stories are so rich and deep in their storytelling and themes. While I am so happy with the succss of aot, it's rather sad that hnk has had such a slow burn getting the recognition it deserves, with both it's written and artistic forms respectedly. I also think that statement rings even more true when it was adaptive into the anime with its groundbreaking cgi with its mixture of hand drawn. Another thing I would also like to add that not many people seem to mention is that hnk is a fascinating take on body horror, and the more so, how in some semblance, it circles back into the aspects of both visual and psychological horror. As for them most part, body horror is usually quite camp (/pos) and grotesque, it is very refreshing to see such such a intriguing take on it, especially with its connected interweaving with memory loss. As someone who has been following this series since it first started getting translated into english right around the time I started questioning my own purpose as a bi-racial, disabled kid, starting to question their gender. This manga and anime help immensely in the prosses of digesting all of that. This manga and anime will always be in my top 5 if not my personal number 1.
The body horror aspect of the story is definitely one of its best, I honestly wish I talked about it more in this video the more that I think about it, it’s something that I might just end up covering in a future video even though there’s already videos about this aspect of the series. I loved reading this insight btw :)
3:37 The reason for that is (which I found out some days ago) bc with every part they lose the lose memories. So it makes sense that Phos changes so much I mean (which is also a spoiler for the anime and Manga) they lose their legs, their arms and even their head and with every part lost memories are getting lost as well which is also the reason why phos is changing so much and this is also why phos says in chapter 98 "I remembered the past"
I miss young phos so much then here i am bcs miss them very much. I don't hate current phos or any version of phos too. And i hate that arrogant ghost, they the one that really have responsible to make phos like now. Edit (spoiler) : and make chill yellow diamond go crazy, become delusional. I can't imagine their thought and burden about the fast changed of entire mineral family. P.s i use they bcs these beautiful mineral doesn't have gender.
I love this show so much it’s so underrated and for me it was a beautiful anime that makes you think and each character is a individual. Im going to start the manga today. Also you gained a new sub ;))
houseki no kuni is my all time fav manga, it's really good to see more peeps talking about it too! also i hope the ending is better then AOT, even if controversial
I adore this show and series so much :) for anyone thinking of starting it, definitely check it out Everything in the series is so well done I can't help but gush over it. I especially love the art, the way the author manipulates panels and composition to match the tone of the scene is beautifully done. Every part of the series feels so well put together I'm in awe of it

hey, really happy to find people talking about hnk, it really doesn't get as much attention as it deserves, great video. also, wanted to follow you on twitter but the account's suspended, do you have a new account?
I can see the AOT & Hnk comparisons with it's mystery surrounding the history of the world. Though I'd say Aot does it a bit better since the "Canned Fish" scene exists.
The crap was up with the random dig at Jujutsu Kaisen? I have no idea what you're on about and then you just moved on. So that's really weird and offputting, which kind-of sucks because the rest of the video so far was just sort-of working for me.
I agree it was pretty good, but comparing the main character to GUTS, I have to politely disagree. Guts and Berserk is what got me into Anime/Manga. I have been looking for that livel of brutallity in other Manga, but it seems more and more everything is becoming more... "Cutesy" I guess would be the word I would use.
I find the comparison works very well. If anything I find Phos to be more tragic than Guts because at least there were people that understood him. Phos became something much more terrifying than the God Hand in my opinion considering what she does after she learned the truth.
I wish they'd continue the show... I want to see more of the 3D art style
I’ve only seen a bit of it but it looks beautiful, deserves a 2nd season

I just recently finished HnK and Pandora Hearts back to back and loved both. This is such a crazy coincidence!
HOW ARE YOU THE SAME AS ME
The worst part is that the manga only makes it worse, is a rollercoaster to depression... Poor Phos...
