  • Inside of Holyrood Abbey in Edinburgh lies a burial vault, and this was once the royal vault. Today it is sealed by a large door, but it was where many Kings of Scotland were interred following their deaths. Today Holyrood Abbey is a shell of its former self, and it was the place where Kings and Queens would come to worship, but this vault was broke into a number of times over the centuries. Inside of the vault was the remains of the Second Husband of Mary Queen of Scots, the infamous Lord Darnley a man who was obsessed with power, and he wished greatly for his wife to make him the King of Scotland and to rule alongside her. But Mary never granted Darnley this, and Henry Stuart as he was known became furious. He died under rather bizarre circumstances, but the location of his remains are a mystery and it’s believed that they were stolen from that very burial vault inside of Holyrood Abbey. But what is the story of opening the coffin of Mary Queen of Scots’ Second Husband.

Enjoyed this. It would have been good to see the facial reconstruction of the skull.
Darnley sounds like a right piece of work. I think it was the historian David Starkey who said " royal blood flowed in his veins, and so did a lot of whiskey".

Darnley sounds like what we’d call a narcissist now.

The term "narcissist" is so over used nowadays, often incorrectly. Narcissism is nothing new. Half of the people that get labeled as one, aren't...

Look up the Cadaver trial of Pope Formosus. He was dug up and clothed in papal robes and put on trial for his corruption in his buying of the papacy.

I believe Elizabeth knew what Darnley was like and sent him there knowing he would woo Mary. Knowing Darnleys character it’s likely that Elizabeth’s men murdered him too further ruining Mary’s reputation.

Darnley made enough enemies in Scotland for there to be no need to send any agents from England.

I feel that Lord Ruthvwn's involvement in Rizzio's murder should have been mentioned and discussed the circumstances that had Mary and Darnley fled together afterwards.

Poor choices seem to have a great role to play in Mary’s life. She sounds to be one of those very intelligent people who completely lack common sense.

I think it was due to her not having much role models in her life her father died before she knew him, her mother whom she adored died in her teen years and was miles and miles away most of her life, her MIL was Catherine de Medici (enough said there) her uncles were social climbers. Yeah not much role models around for this young woman

Lord Henry Darnley was also very close to the Scottish Throne through being GrGr grandson of James II of Scotland and was related to Queen Mary on both sides, first cousin on his mother's side who was aunt of Queen Mary. Both were grandchildren of Queen Margaret Tudor with Queen Mary being the senior of both lines. Indeed the Hamilton s and the Stewarts were very closely related with the Hamiltons being senior claim to the lennox Stewarts but behind Queen Mary's line which was the senior Stewart line. Politically the marriage of MWOS and LD was sound and correct personality it was a disaster for both as LD was simply unfit for the rule of Consort. Queen Mary has for too often been labelled as foolish and not up to the job often compared to Elizabeth Tudor but history fails to point out the difficulties that Queen Mary encountered which were totally different from England. In Scotland the royal word was often ignored the nobles were unruly and regularly betrayed their country and Queen for personal gain and English gold in pay of the English crown. Queen Mary had to battle on on her own with no army to call on unlike in England. The religious settlement was diffirent from England. Queen Mary whilst Catholic accepted the protestant reformation she found on arrival in Scotland. . No one unlike in England where she and many Catholics were persecuted and often murdered. Contrary to the wide miss information. The Scottish People rose to Queen Mary's support when the treacherous nobility rebelled against her marriage to. Darnley and were chased out if Scotland to England where Elizabeth Tudor having given financial support to them, gave them sanctuary in England and were allowed to leave unlike Queen Mary who received very different treatment fron Elizabeth Tudor and ultimately murdered her..again after Rizzio was murdered the Scottish people rose in her favour when Queen Mary having cleverly separated Darnley from the treacherous lords who were holding her captive escaped and returned to Edinburgh 10 days later at head of 10,000 army, whilst 6 months pregnant. the treacherous nobility again fled to and received safety in England.. When Darnley was murdered Two witness heard Darnley plead for his life saying pity me kinsmen it was the Douglas's who murdered Darnley not bothwell as history had us believe. The protestant Lords were quilty of Darnley murder not Queen Mary. Yes Queen Mary married Bothwell at the behest of the nobility who signed the Ainslie bind petitioning Queen Mary to marry Bothwell fior the good n weal of the realm. Unfortunately Queen Mary was against a hard rock and deep blue see. Bothwell had been found innocent of Darnleys s murder a point often ignored.. Scotland was not an easy kingdom to rule, Queen Mary's sex and religion were against her but she had proven she was capable of ruling independently of the nobility which they did not like. When the treacherous nobility again rebelled after Queen Mary had married Bothwell. It was because he was a strong able Consort for Queen Mary who would have eliminated them and been a very strong defender of the crown which they did not want. Its very strange having risen against Bothwell not Queen Mary whio they promised to serve honour and accept her as Queen if she parted from Bothwell, who they claimed they were rescuing her from. Bothwell was allowed to leave Carberry field but Queen Mary was subjected to insults humiliation and a rabble in sighted by that bigot and hypocrite John Knox. Queen Mary was moved late at night from Holyrood house not because they feared for her life as they claimed but because the Edinburgh mob had regained sanity and were demanding to see their Queen as they had realised things were not as they had been lead to believe. The Scottish people again rose to Queen Mary when sbe escaped Lochleven but sadly lost the battle of langside in 1568.had Queen Mary been able to return to Scotland there is every reason the Scottish people again would have rallied to their Queen. Darnley was a nasty stupid person who was beaten at his own n game by better traitors. Unfortunately he dragged Queen Mary down with him. If only Darnley had the brains his blood and lineage demanded and deserved he could have been a Great Consort to Queen Mary who would have had a long and happy reign and successfully acquired the English crown of which she was the legitimate and rightful processor of.

I agree, but imagine what it was like for Mary arriving amongst the best of vipers which was the Scottish court. After a rather sheltered and spoilt life in France, I doubt if Mary was very well equipped for ruling Scotland.

henry stuart was also the king consort, as husband to the queen regnant of scots...
his major ambition was to become the king matrimonial, as the de facto ruler...not as just a husband of the ruler...,
as much owing for his tudor blood as his stuart ...
as for comparisons to his cousin Elizabeth I & Mary stuart I....
robert dudley wife mysterious death an being the favourite , was a scandal...
can you imagine , queen elizabeth I being brought before a court, for actions or lack of her favourite, earl robert dudley......
to the scottish courts or parliment....
for political reasons, and the cecily dynasty... after plots and rebellions,
elizabeth I was cautious..., the very long house arrest for years...was part of that...
scotland, had a history of many regents of clergy & nobility...

I truly doubt Mary would want that as her friend was butchered in front of her while she was pregnant by her husband and his evil cohorts. The blood of Rizzio still stains Holyrood. I've been there.
      Leave her be.

Mary was no angel, and Darnley didn't have much of a chance to be nasty to her, in the period after the murder of Rizzio. She hated him. He was send away, without money, he had to beg very often, and she told the nobles to ignore him, and not help him. He was alone, isolated, and frustrated. I don't think he was an angel too, because he planned the murder of Rizzio, even though Mary completely disregarded his confession, and changed the story, maybe for the sake of herself, that he was innocent. She knew he wasn't, and then started planning a revenge.
First she poisoned him, but even though she gave quite a lot, he wasn't much deformed, as she wrote to Boswell. Then, in cold winter she take the post to his bedside, at his father's. She never saw the old Earl, but staid close to Darnley, watching when he was going to die. Then Boswell was ordered to get a lodging. He got one close to an abandoned house of the Hamilton's, and where thieves, beggars, loose women, reign, or rather a poor area, because the rich nobles left that area. Not exactly a cozy place to recover. Badly planned murder, between Mary, Boswell, the Earl of Argyle, and some other nobles, plus those of the meaner sort, who got hanged.
