oh boy that bring me so much memories...Optima Mid was my first Racing RC car!! now 30 years later, I'm still hooked time to time on R/C car racing...it's all has been started for me
Wow, David from the UK is a top bloke for donating that Optima Mid to you, you lucky beggar ;) I love the poster and the magazine, reminds me of late 1987 and early 1988 when I used to buy the magazines every month, absolutely loved them! I'm looking forward to seeing the car finished and running :)
That ready to race pedigree Kyosho has always had was the big appeal to me back in the day. As a broke kid scraping whatever I could together to race back in the day it just felt like you needed to put more money into a Tamiya buggy vs Kyosho to be competitive it’s only as an adult that I’ve begun to appreciate Tamiya for what they are and the impact they have on the hobby. I was to young to have raced a rear motor Optima but the Turbo Optima Mid was king of 4WD buggies at my local track till the Yokomo YZ10 came out I am so looking forward to the Mid being re-re
I think those gold shocks are the legendary Kyosho Velvet shocks- Arguably the best RC shocks ever. I have a set on an Ultima SC and they are SMOOOOTH! Thanks for the awesome vid, I love seeing the other brands occasionally!
The Optima mid and RC10 were buggy’s that were legend when I was a kid partly because no one I knew had one but they were always in magazines as race winners. They seemed unattainable for some reason. Great video.
I bought a RC10 Gold pan back in the late 80s from a fellow Rc Club member for £60 !!! One of the worst decisions I made was selling that and my XLS . At the time circumstances dictated it.
This is the 4wd buggy I wanted so much when I started racing 2wd. My mate ended up with the optima mid custom se ……I still only had 2wd. Cannot wait for the re re
I love kyosho, unfortunately they are not cheap 🙁, I have built one recently (Tomahawk), the standard of engineering is way above Tamiya, they are a joy to build and behold! Don't get me wrong, I still love Tamiya (all bar one in my collection are Tamiya). Fantastic vid Glenn 👍
Warwan also makes the body set for the Mid; I got one with his decal set for an SE restoration a couple years ago. Quality is excellent. I never owned a Mid back in the day but I started collecting them a few years ago. What a great car!! Very much looking forward to the next video. 👍👍
I love seeing Kyosho cars on your channel. I definitely share your enthusiasm for certain cars, and This is one for sure. Still waiting to here some news about the rere mid. Sounds like Europe is pre-ordering, but not even a cricket chirp here in the US? I’ve got two ‘87 Turbo Ultima’s on my shelf and a Mid would sit nice in my collection. Not to mention fulfill a childhood dream. Itlll go on the shelf, but not until I run the wheels off of it first. 😁
I have a Marwan body, it comes with the decals and it is excellent, as are all his bodies, quality is a bit better than the TBG. Don't get me wrong TBG are awesome, and I have loads of them, and early on before all the rere"s they helped me with a ton of restorations. I would say the Marwan bodies are as good as the Kyosho originals.
Love your collection and video's glen.i used to have the suburu brat and later a terra scorcher wi a couple of friends with sand scorchers and a frog.each with 4 batteries apiece fun days to be had.we even went poorly from school to go to Beaties in Sheffield (they made some 💸💸💸out of us that day)then all built them in my parents kitchen 😂😂.I'm still in the RC game but with crawler's now, slow is the new fast for me👍.keep them vids coming
Omg Glenn you've been and done it again! Your videos are mind-blowing, just so much passion and love for these buggy ❤️ you are a legend mate. Me I would leave the old sticker on the motor, it just adds to the history and nostalgia of the car.
Stomped a couple of Yokomo Dogfighters at my local track with one of these back in my youth (where have the 30 plus years gone)!!! Back when everyone wanted to be Masami Hirosaka LOL.
I also nearly destroyed a mid recently in sand - everything has to be 100% buttoned up to keep it out but I’d never do it again that’s for sure what a mess - can’t wait to see this one fly great stuff!!!!
You know the funny thing about Parma even though they don't exist anymore I remember where their headquarters were and it wasn't in the town of Parma in Ohio it was in North Royalton which is a little bit south of Parma.
Great video👌I’ll be watching with interest on your restoration and your tips so I can restore the one I’ve got. First thing is to change the front bumper and wheels on mine, bumper is a Schumacher Cat one and the wheels are aftermarket.
I had that one. I think I put Thorpe ball differentials and some other upgrades in it. I think I also stripped all the rear gears on sand since the belt covers were never perfect at keeping out dirt.
What a machine. These things came out a bit to late for me so never owned or even driven one but anyone who has ever dabbled in the rc Hoby can tell just by looking this thing is a out and out race buggy.
Great to see another Mid in your collection Glenn. :) Just a reminder about the tyres, they're OT66, actually, I need to order some myself. When trimming the body around the spur gear, I cut up a piece of 2mm aluminum plate and made a template with the right curve to scribe along it with a hobby knife, much easier than scissors and a much nicer result. After absolutely butchering the first body I attempted, I got a bit creative. :P One more thing, a lot of people don't realize it but the Standard Mid (Your Mid) wheels are different to the Turbo Mid wheels. Standard Mid wheels have a smooth glossy surface whereas the Turbo Mid wheels have a textured finish and extra bracing on the inside. SE wheels are the same as Turbo's but silver in colour. Lastly, that motor is the standard motor for the Standard Mid and Turbo Mid SE.
Glenn can you do a compare video? like this Optima to a similar Tamiya kit, to show the difference in quality and overall build, show the slop vs no slop etc, I have always wondered the difference.
Love the video Glenn and what a great story of generosity and passion for RC. This is making the wait for the re-release a bit harder though! :-) Happy new year to you and look forward to more great videos in 2022.
Hi Glen, it's also my favorite kyosho buggy, I'm on my second one after selling my built and boxed minter 5 years back, I managed to get another near mint example minus the body and decals, I would recommend purple penguin swb version fits perfectly over the plastic motor cover. Next year its been rerelease so nows the time to add and own the original. Great buggy.
Spot on! What a car. Can't wait to see this built up and run (again) 😉 Have you noticed the red gold black decals are eerily close to the Schumacher you featured yesterday? I'm sure it's just coincidence... On that Parma poster, 4th row, 3rd in on the right, the red Ford-esque body, I had that, painted black with flame decals and silver grill mounted on my Falcon. I thought it looked great. In truth it was a stinker and made a slow car even slower 🤣
Never had a new mid . I had a secondhand one the one with the black shocks not sure what model that was. Excellent Buggy, I went on to a Lazer xzr . I'm a bit of Kyosho fan lol! Oh yeah I was 13 when that magazine came out . I did get a Parma modified 16x3 that following year.
The Le Mans 240 ST was included in the kit to the Mid, the Turbo Mid SE, and Mid Custom as far as I can see from my old brochures, although there may have been different content in different production lots. You should check out the Optima Mid JG body, I have a similar, it is more detailed than the standard Mid bodies (but the decals may need to be slightly adapted)
Nice video again Glenn, you are knocking out some great stuff at the moment. The 240ST is the motor that came with that car. You are correct the decals are MCI repo decals. Body wise I would go with either a penguin or Marwan they both fit really well. What are your plans for the mid ? Full box art style restore or full carbon restomod with a Glenn Barclay twist. I’m sure either will be great.
Very nice Glenn, maybe in the spring or summer you could put this around the track to compare it against Tamiya's of that time, maybe even put it up against a durga or TD4.
Nice and timely one Glenn! Just got my first Mid and started my resto. Doesn’t look you had a motor plate, I don’t either. Is that necessary? Also, I got a body and decals from Marwan along with the wheels so hopefully those are good. Also I need to find a wing support somewhere.
Nice one Glenn. I found another of your videos on your channel of an Optima Mid running. It was in a snowy car park and it was probably another version of the Mid which is why you didn't reference it. Still great to see again though. :-)
I had a fair few tamiya buggies years back and liked them but when I got my first kyosho, a lazer, I realised kyosho is just as good quality wise, actually parts wise i would better, manual was good also.
Hi Glen, awesome gifts 🎁, I’ve got a couple of Kyosho Ford RS200s and I need a set of those wheels, soooo if you ever want to sell them, I’d be happy to take them off your hands 🙌 lol 😝 Niiiiiiiiiiice video man. 😎👍👍👍🇬🇧 Ps…..do you know the parts number for the wheels 🤪
I don't see any "SLOP" on this buggy, is Kyosho really that much better than Tamiya in quality? All my Tamiya's that i have owned have slop in the steering and suspension arms, my current Manta Ray runner has lots of slop even after shimming it lol.
So it’s OK for you to talk about Kyosho in Tamiya Legends group, but NOT OK for me to talk about Mini 4WD, which is CLEARLY TAMIYA in the same group?? Hypocrite!
The generosity of the folks that watch this channel is awesome. What a crackin little car.
oh boy that bring me so much memories...Optima Mid was my first Racing RC car!!
now 30 years later, I'm still hooked time to time on R/C car racing...it's all has been started for me
Who gives away a vintage mid😲loving the kyosho and schumacher legends videos, old memories coming flooding back
Had this car back in the late 80's and absolutely loved it...huge leap up from the Tamiya Falcon. Thinking about getting another.
that just smacked me back to 88 :D
Nice to see that there are still generous people who support your channel 👍
The Parma poster is really cool! Their variety back in the day was outstanding.
Wow, David from the UK is a top bloke for donating that Optima Mid to you, you lucky beggar ;) I love the poster and the magazine, reminds me of late 1987 and early 1988 when I used to buy the magazines every month, absolutely loved them! I had 2 rc cars when I was a kid- a Kyosho Icarus and then a Turbo Mid SE. Can't wait to get one of the 2022 mids
I had a lot of success racing one of these cars, back in the day.
I had an Turbo Optima Mid SE when I was a kid. Great kit and fast as heck.
Wade I can't tell you how many times I got busted in band class for having an open RC Car Action over my music sheet LOL
I bought a RC10 Gold pan back in the late 80s from a fellow Rc Club member for £60 !!! One of the worst decisions I made was selling that and my XLS . At the time circumstances dictated it.
Amazing car for the time. The first generation of really good 4WD buggies.
This is the 4wd buggy I wanted so much when I started racing 2wd. My mate ended up with the optima mid custom se ……I still only had 2wd. Cannot wait for the re re
That's awfully nice of David. Enjoy it my friend. I can't wait to pock one up this spring.
I found the last shop with rere optima mids in my country. Pulled the trigger as soon as i saw 'in stock'=)
Gotta love the mids 😎👊👌🔥🔥🔥 looking forward to seeing this one finished Glenn .
Warwan also makes the body set for the Mid; I got one with his decal set for an SE restoration a couple years ago. Quality is excellent.
I never owned a Mid back in the day but I started collecting them a few years ago. What a great car!! Very much looking forward to the next video. 👍👍
Cool buggy Glenn👍 again looking forward to seeing this one rebuilt👍
Awesome Glenn what a car !! total legend.. David has a great car collection .. and massive respect for donating to the channel :) wow
What a proper 'Legend' Dave is for that donation.
looking forward to the finished article Glenn 👍

I bought a top force instead of a lazer back in the day. Super stoked for the Optima Mid rere.
Wow...... that's an awesome gift to the channel, very generous!!
Hope you had a great Christmas..... and will have a fantastic New Year and 2022.
😀
Mega Glenn. Can't wait until the rere Optima Mid comes out in March 2022.
A friend of mine had one of these back in the day. Fantastic car!
Sweet ride can't wait for you to do the body. Going to turn out nice I bet. Thanks for the video.

Should be able to clean those wheels up with a sonic cleaner machine. All the Kyosho Optima series were the shiznitt, and still are!

I did not know that about the wheels thank you.
Wow... a wealth of information 👍🔥
memories! I used to race one of these at club level as a kid, it was my last car.... I wonder where it went, might still be in the loft ?
Glenn can you do a compare video? like this Optima to a similar Tamiya kit, to show the difference in quality and overall build, show the slop vs no slop etc, I have always wondered the difference.

Totally spoilt with all these top class retro videos… + your getting closer to your 25k subs target dude!
Awesome looking car,thanks for sharing!

So I’ve got everything on order with Marwan, going 100% box art on this one my friend 😍😍😍

My fast rc car got it at Morley modes back in the 80s

Lovely car.... if they do drop the rere il definitely be in 👌
Another great video Glenn 👍
Getting used to all these uploads now, keep it up 😎
That Avante report looks really interesting
the blue&yellow optima no wing was the one i could not afford lol guess it was before the mids
I wouldn't say the greatest! Yokomo already kicked it but years before! Awesome Heavy car though!
I had a fair few tamiya buggies years back and liked them but when I got my first kyosho, a lazer, I realised kyosho is just as good quality wise, actually parts wise i would better, manual was good also.
Very special buggy indeed
Lots of videos awesome😎😎
kinda like you getting out of tamiya only..the ninja thingy and kyosho..way to expensive for me back then but its super cool cars
Glenn penguin do a great body set and also the undertray
It’s being re-released in spring!!
Hi Glen, awesome gifts 🎁, I’ve got a couple of Kyosho Ford RS200s and I need a set of those wheels, soooo if you ever want to sell them, I’d be happy to take them off your hands 🙌 lol 😝
Niiiiiiiiiiice video man. 😎👍👍👍🇬🇧
Ps…..do you know the parts number for the wheels 🤪
If you can wait till March or April and if the rumours are true I would wait till then and pick and choose the parts from the ReRe Mid.
Those vintage Kyosho's look very nice, Glenn how would you rate this buggy against say the Top Force or Egress for driving/racing etc.
In my opinion although those two came out after the Mid, I’d say the Mid is the better of the three on the track 🤷🏼♂️
@@TAMIYALegends Cool, now i need to get a Kyosho onto my channel lol
I am hearing that Kyosho might re-release this kit. Thoughts?
What was the front wheel drive optima kit called . It was released about the same time as the mid and looked like the mid
That poor lunchie all alone in the bottom 😂
I don't see any "SLOP" on this buggy, is Kyosho really that much better than Tamiya in quality? All my Tamiya's that i have owned have slop in the steering and suspension arms, my current Manta Ray runner has lots of slop even after shimming it lol.
