Happy to see you got one back. I still have mine sitting NIB next to my NIB RC10 re re. As far as paint, do what makes you smile the most. When I eventually build mine, I plan on getting a painter to do the later Masami colors (the green and pinks) on mine.
XL was an evolution on the swb - basically the same but 25mm longer. Was supplied with a front spool with oneways although a front diff was an option. Moulded CAT bumper appeared midway through production run. XLS saw a 10mm increase in track, a wider steering rack, a higher rear roll centre and increased front castor through different shock towers. My vintage racer is an XL.
Hi Glenn, if I had a CAT in my collection I would just have to have it in Masami colours, but I know you’ve done them before. I guess for me, Masami is just such a huge part of that car and indeed that era of rc. He was an enigma, a few of the guys I race with in Australia were at the 1989 worlds in Australia and some of the tales were a lot of fun. Apparently Masami and his father sprinkled baby powder on the tires of their cars whilst the cars were on the grid. This obviously created a huge tidal wave of conversation amongst all the other drivers and teams thinking that somehow Masami was using the baby powder for grip to get an advantage. Before long every other team were rushing to the supermarket finding the exact brand of baby powder and sprinkling it on all their tires! The joke was on everyone else of course as the baby powder was a red herring, a distraction that got everyone focusing on baby powder whilst Masami cruised to victory in both 2WD and 4WD. I’m sure Masami and his Father had a good old chuckle about that one.
Schumacher!!! The ONE buggy I wish I NEVER SOLD right up there with my Original JRX2.....Schumacher Cougar, that thing was a SPACESHIP when it was first released. Man this channel ROCKS!
Nice car Glenn. I believe the XLS was a minor evolution of the XL. The XLS had a slightly wider track, one way bearings in the front, a front sway bar and of course those chrome wheels! 👍
I remember being at a bmx track as a kid and seeing one of these running about.. Me and my friends from that moment on realised our Tamiya cars were slow.. I was lucky enough to speak to Robin S a while back what a lovely guy, very knowledgeable and helpful. Lots of things like the Ansmann rat etc.. came to the market which gave you performance and handling of cars in the 300 - 400 price range. Brilliant trip down memory lane, and those of us that cannot afford these amazing game changing cars.. at least we can get one of the copies and still have some fun. Wishing the whole time it was really one of these...
Nice to see you have a Cat XLS in your personal collection. For me they are a bit of a love hate car. When mine runs it’s great, handles amazing for its age really smooth and quick, it’s a real pain to setup and keep in the right window. The Nov 1986 RCMC magazine has a turbo optima with a rising sun themed shell on the front cover. I was so close to paining my XLS in a similar way as a nod to Masami. My daughter convinced me to go box art and now I wish I had gone with my gut.
I bought the original CAT (SWB) back when they first became available at my local hobby shop here in America. I still have the car and I've become a huge fan of the simple white box-art livery for that car. Anyway, a year later I also bought the XL then upgraded that car to XLS spec's when the parts became available. I still have both cars and I've added the Masami re-re when it was released a few years ago and replaced all its FRP plates with carbon. The Schumacher CAT is very near the top on my list of great RC's of all time.
Glenn you need to run it at least once. They are so good and drive absolutely brilliant. A car which wouldn't be discraced even among alot of today's cars.
Gasteros plating near swadlingcote do plating kits for plastic, so if you want chrome looking stuff or want to anodise things.. really cool, i have a kit on the way!! I ended up with a Baja 5 flux because of the Hotshot ii having such a visual impact on me as a kid.. RC cars got me into engineering and are a brilliant gateway for us and our kids into a very fun and interesting hobby! love your passion dude.. looking forward to seeing how this turns out.
The xl was a long wheelbase of the short car ie still narrow track. The xls was a further development being long wheelbase and maximum track width along with one way front shafts and the wider track centre steering link. Rear upper arm position was also lowered from swb/xl to the xls.
It's such an awesome car. For me the original masami livery I'd the thing, but I can understand when you had it two times before that you want to try something else. It's a though choice to do of the two others, they both looks pretty cool. Looking forward to see what you go for, and how the fat cat body turns out.
Excellent video can't wait to see the finished buggy👍 you must be a glutton for punishment building a second cat xls😲 one was enough for me! I would go for the original cat xls boxart definitely looks retro!
Pepsi livery holds a connection to my Rc past raced a Pepsi mid during the 80’s at my local track in the uk. Due to this I snapped up a Pepsi cat XLS of the bay a while back. If you need Piccys for inspiration give me a shout glen merry crimbo
I like the Masami for the body it comes with and then the Pepsi decals for the fat cat body. I like the first set of the more period correct decals for it and maybe some red and blue stripes kind of offset down the middle of the car would be cool.
I went from a Tamiya Hornet to a second hand Schumacher cat, didn't have a clue how to set it up so I traded it for something else. Had a nitro 10 at one point too.
Personally, I like the CAT XLS Masami box art, it looks awesome. I've had a thought, what about doing a Tamiya TRF design for the bodyshell? I bet nobody has done that before ;) Glad you got another Cat XLS, you looked so pleased to get one!!
I got one when i heard they were ending production. I was working away from home so i had it delivered to my parents and didn't see it for 3 months. When i got it and heard about the prices they were pulling, i got too scared to build it. I've never bought an RC as an investment but i think this is the kit to keep in the box.
You've already done it in Masami, the original XLs is similar, your only option left is SWB. SWB artwork with chrome rims and the pro transmission is a no-brainer.
Glenn, I thought the XL was the conversion from shortie to long. And yes, I’m a much bigger Schumacher fan than Tamiya, but it’s all toy cars, so all are good😃 Also, RIP Dan 😥
Or you could have the body painted professionally in the more recent Masami colors like he did with his personal re-release CAT. You can check it out on the Masaaki YT channel, looks super sick.
Few facts for you mate The only differences from the swb to the xl is the longer chassis & body set. the wide track suspension & front diff only came out on the xls, Schumacher also changed their shocks from 1 o-ring to 2 o-rings at this time as well although the outer shock body design stayed the same The swb decals from mci are not the correct decals, in fact the swb didn't actually come with a decal sheet, it only came with a few Schumacher logo stickers, the box art design was a 1 off design done for the boxart pictures & although the mci decals are part right they are not 100% correct, the colours in the stripes are wrong & they have missed out certain lines that are very hard to see, i know this as i wanted to paint my swb correctly so i spent months talking to Schumacher & friends on the internet, a good friend of mine sent me a picture of Cecil Schumacher holding the original car & the stripes on the top of the car are very different to what mci think they are & what nearly every car i have seen done in this design, there is also a hidden decal in front of the window & the words CAT is above each of the number 1 logos on the sides So saying all that i believe i have the only correctly painted boxart swb in the world which being a massive Schumacher fan is very cool, if you want to see pics of the shell mate i can email them to you, as always my shell is all paint with no stickers & the stripes were a real challenge to paint as two of the lines are 0.6mm thick! Regards Gainsy
Fat cat bodyshell is indeed parma originally.. and the fat cat shell, does not fit the standard or original cat undertray. Penguin in the uk makes the undertray. Good luck with the build
Hi Glen if you go for the original cat xls don't use the red, yellow decals as it's no where near as nice as the full paint job. The white original version is the short wheel base and the red and blue decals work fine but remember there for the swb body not the lwb so it might not look as cool as the original. Heath...
There’s some very good info about the different CAT versions in this Iconic RC video: ruclips.net/video/ptFSCJOgh8o/видео.html The relevant part starts at 07:20.
Option 2 but metallic black, yellow and red to really make it pop. Not a fan of the Fat Cat at all; it turns a sleek, super stealth machine into an overweight pig. Would love to see this run a few times as well just to remind us how brilliant they are and why they were the weapon of choice bitd.
I’ve got an fully original CAT XL with classic black wheels, it’s a great car. Would love to get a original SWB! Do you have a PB Mini mustang or Maxima in your collection?
Re the differences between the XL and XLS, from memory I seem to recall the XLS was basically an XL but built to Massami Hirosaka specs wider front track, Chrome Wheels etc. Back in the day Radio Control Model Cars Magazine did an article on how to upgrade your CAT XL to XLS specs, I’ve still got all my RC magazines if I get chance I’ll try to find the article.

Hey Glenn, no cancel culture here, friends can disagree. :-) I think you should do a new body scheme entirely, and I don't like the Fat CAT body. As for the CAT itself, hmmm, didn't buy one when they were available. Some days wish I had, others glad I didn't. Some options were silly money prices and now even more silly. Don't get me wrong, It looks amazing and is the definition of iconic but things like a bad build process, finicky design, piano wire instead of hinge pins, and silly prices will keep me away. MASAMI box art for me Glen. But ethereal I'm sure what ever you do will turn out great !
