  • Randy recalls the last elk hunt he and our two sons went on together on in 2006 [he was thinking at recording it was in 2005] in the backcountry of our beautiful North Fork of the Shoshone National Forest.
He also recalls a solo scouting trip, with mule, horse and hound, with a funny twist.
    Photos included.

The best times of my life was hunting. Randy I get you 100 percent. There is in our deep soul something magical almost religious in hunting. Some experience it many don't. Some of us, you and I it goes really deep into the soul. The way the world is now we have been wounded severely. A sincere thank you to you and your wife. At least we have our memories.

Great hunting story. Listening to your story is a 10000x better than the canned hunting on the tv. That promote this crap of trophy hunting and long range hunting. Whether it’s archery or rifle hunting. Ethical hunting has been lost. I started archery hunting years ago and learned from older gentleman. He was a State archery champion. He told me yes you can hit a 3d target at 50 yards. But the speed of sound is significantly more than your arrow velocity.
Limit your shot to 25 yards! That is if you can get good enough to hit a snuff can lid at 40 yards. We all owe it to the game we hunt to be ethical.
    God Bless and Thank you!!

    Great story.
Some of the trouble with the new age hunters is, they didn’t have fathers like you & my dad, to teach love, respect & reverence, for our beautiful wildlife.
People are losing touch with their primal instincts & it has become more about how things look, as opposed to how things are.
The hunt, the taking of the game, giving thanks & blessing the game, preparing & consuming the game, nourishes the soul deeply.
I don’t think some of the new fellers were taught how to immerse themselves in that part or taught to understand the deeply gratifying experience of it all.
These majestic animals are gifts to man. We are to demonstrate grace, dignity & thankfulness.

I know exactly what you’re talking about. I hunted with Harold Turner at the Triangle X south of Yellowstone in the early 90s. I trained horses so riding that country and seeing that game was absolutely magical. The amount of elk that was there was unbelievable the moose were incredible. Also by the time I’ve got enough preference points to hunt moose there was no moose left. I had to go south east about 60 miles to Hunt. I just recently hunted at the Triangle x 2021. There was hardly any elk left what a shame ballot box biology.

I've really enjoyed this hunting story. It reminds me of the times when my son and I went hunting before he joined the usmc. We'd have the times of our lives deer and Wildhogs.
Once we were hunting in coke and Nolan counties on the Barret ranch that the ranch house straddled. Mrs. Bobby Barrett said if a tornado watch or warning was issued for one of those counties, she'd just go to the other side of the house!
My son Ethan bagged his first deer on that ranch with his 243, and I still remember it like it was yesterday.

These 1,000yd moa rifles and TV and internet pushing em are a curse to what hunting=working to get into ethical range, for a sure shot, and a full recovery isn't even in many people's thinking!

So Randy I'd really like to hear what you and others here think what the solution may be. Is it creating more ethical and moral youngsters to continue the traditions? Do we have a conservation problem that needs to be addressed? Is there a predator problem that is hurting the hunting? Are there simply too many hunters theae days?
What can we do? Do we buy land and build private reserves for ourselves and family and friends? Do we need to bring awareness to the issue? Im curious how we can improve things..

    • @TheRealGunsmith

Wolves destroy hunting, everywhere. A highly REDUCED wolf population is the only way to bring back the once record herds we had. Then there was a study done by Yellowstone National Park, showing that 98% of newborn elk were killed by grizzlies in the first 48 hours of life! Game departments, which brought the wolves in are sure not going to admit that their policy back fired. Go to rangedex.com, Summer 2019 issue of Are Wolves the Problem. Also just do a search of "Wolves" in their Rangedex page. You will find many, many well researched, well written articles with suggested steps USFWS and all states involved should use to reverse the damage being done. Then, on top of the severe depredation by wolves, coyotes, mountain lions, grizzly and some black bear, we have the over selling of licenses in the areas already hard hit, with them waiting for 5-7 years to do feasibility studies on "what should we do", while the problem gets worse and worse. There have been a couple of people say I lie about this because WY is proposing unlimited elk tags. What they didn't read is that 1] it is proposed, not a done deal yet, 2] it is for only 8 of the 130 elk hunt areas, so just a bit over 6% of the hunt area for elk. 3] Six of those 8 areas would be on private land only. Lots of luck with that! 4] the areas with too many elk in WY are far removed from wolf and grizzly populations, and in areas with more private land than public land, unlike our area and around YNP, which is mostly public land. People need to be INVOLVED in their state with game management. Encourage them to return to the North American Model of Conservation, which brought severely depleted game animals from the brink of extinction in many cases, to premier herds. Encourage them to follow Alaska model. EVERY hunter, no matter what they are hunting, and even if they don't harvest anything, have to fill out a form, on phone or on line of what animals they saw in the area they hunted, the #, the number of male/female [as can be determined], etc. Based in, for example, 2023 reports from the field and from their conservation officers, the regs were set for 2024. Some areas saw increased tags for moose, some saw decrease or none, depending on the herd health and #. They don't wait for years and years pondering what to do and it works well.
      Thanks for watching.

Hunting is definitely changed and not for the good. I feel that the modern generation has truly missed the point and will never realize what a true hunter actually should be. Mr Selby, I agree.

Yes your so right, it's to bad almost all the Western states fish an game departments have turned into such a bunch of wolf but kissers allowing them to decimate the elk population in many areas. I guess were the lucky ones to be able to remember what it was like before the wolf's.
