I've made puppet eyes using Styrofoam balls. Just dip them in white latex paint for two layers, then spray on enamel for a shiny finish. I then stick corsage pins or sewing pins through the puppet's head from the inside, and into the Styrofoam ball. Using several of the pins makes for a really secure fit (just make sure that the pins are shorter than the ball is wide).

If you go down the ping pong ball route, how do you attach them to the face? In another video you mentioned contact cement, but because there are no backs to stick on, I’m wondering how you can do it without having the glue visible on his face!

Adam, what would you recommend for a puppet requiring different expressions in the eyes? I.E. have multiple sets of eyes such as WIDE open, half closed, fully closed etc....and have them interchangeable? I'm having a tough time figuring this out for the puppet star of my new music video.
Edit: And frankly I considered trying out the techniques you cover with movable eyelids but that's just too advanced for me I think...

What I did was I used a fursuit making technique called "Follow Me Eyes". The eyes are made from layered White foam for sclera, blue felt cut in an oval for iris, then black felt for the pupil. Then in the foam head I carve a socket that is about a centimeter or two deep. I put the sclera, iris, pupil plate in that socket. Then on the outside of the socket I add the eyelash cut out of black foam. This costs about 5 bucks and can make a lot of eyes. The cool thing is because of the sockets it creates the illusion that the eyes follow you wherever they point like those creepy painting. Also depending on the size of the lash it creates a shadow on the sclera giving a more real look.
