    As someone who grew up on the theme I’m glad to see a retrospective channel give a fair shake of it than just a hand wave away for it being a 4+ subtheme

      Thanks for the support, Richard. While the sets and figs are a bit ugly, the theme itself still represents something important for the LEGO Pirates property- LEGO's first time creating pirate sets outside of Classic Pirates. I hope you have been enjoying the series so far.

    Matpat should make a fifth channel named the toy theorists and you should be in charge of it!

    My stepdad bought Skull Island and Redbeard's ship for me when I was little. I have very fond memories of both sets (I did one of the alternate builds for Skull Island to make it a giant raft), and I still have most (if not all) of the pieces in one of my misc. piece boxes. Hmmm. Might be time to dig them out.
    I vividly remember each set coming with a wall poster that could be displayed as one mega-poster

    I have no doubt the new CEO of LEGO in 2004 had no trouble discontinuing the 4 juniors theme ASAP thus putting an end to the cursed pirates era

      Discontinuing this theme was a great move, so kudos to him.

    I wasn't familiar with this 4+ pirates theme so hearing the background was interesting. I definitely support lego sets made specifically for younger kids though, I'm all about the play. I feel like sometimes we forget that part the older we get. That being said, I can't beat this up too much, especially given the age range. Super cursed minifigs. 😂

    Honestly, owning all the classic Pirate ships and this 4+ vessel, I must admit that the Jack Stone Ship is probably the best suited for play for small children. The others obviously are way more interesting once you are past the age of 5 😂

    Those Jack Stone figures are so cursed but I have a hot take that they're still better than mini dolls because they're actually able to sit down. I'm glad we have those legs from the new avatar set and eggman that are kind of like Jack Stone legs in size but also square minifigure legs.
    I also was able to find that black rowboat at a thrift store not too long ago and built it up into a fishing boat for minifigs

    3:36 The ONE good thing 4+ Pirates did was the ship could actually float in water.
    I absolutely loved that as a kid and kinda wish they would have carried it into regular Pirates.

    Wow - I almost feel embarassed that I didnt know this Pirates subtheme had *any* lore to its name. Up to now I only knew the character names and just observed the halves of the map. Excellent research!

    Why do the Minifigures look so weird?!

    • @OurToyWorld
      @OurToyWorld  Год назад +1

      These were the common figures for LEGO's 4+ / 4 Juniors / Jack Stone themes, which served as a sort of bridge between Duplo and LEGO.

      @@OurToyWorld interesting so it's like half duplo half Lego. I'm glad they don't make these anymore lol.

    I wonder if the real reason thy LEGO isn't willing to bring out an entire new pirate theme is because they _still_ don't know what to do with it. After all, the two incarnations of the theme that came afterwards were, while not bad, kinda limited in their own right in comparison and seemed to try and play things too safe.
    IMO there's tons of stuff that could be done with a pirates theme, but pretty much all of it would require LEGO to move a bit out of the comfort zone of pirates vs imperials.

    • @OurToyWorld
      @OurToyWorld  7 месяцев назад

      That's a great point. I do feel like there is a lot they could do - maybe add in a different TYPE of Imperial (i.e., Armada), or perhaps a different pirate crew? I'm not sure LEGO feels comfortable doing anything with the Islanders again, but they could find another faction to add to the theme

      Some ideas I've had:
      - Zombie pirates led a pirate lich as the enemy to the main pirate crew AND the Imperials. Granted, this one's kinda low-hanging fruit.
      - Put the pirates on a quest to claim treasure from an ancient leviathan. Could work as a "big bang" theme take on Pirates.
      - An Imperial-focused wave, either with an existing Imperial group or a new Imperial faction vs a new villainous pirate faction based on the Corsairs of Barbary.
      - Similar to the above, maybe try something with pirates from another part of the world. Perhaps a wave based on Zheng Yi Sao, the "Pirate Queen of China", and her armada?
