    Great video once again! The 2009 pirates wave really is a fun one! Next year is the 35th anniversary of the original pirates theme, so I really hope they do something pirates related. A new theme would be so nice...

      Next year is the 35th anniversary of LEGO Pirates? Damn, where did the time go? While I obviously prefer themes, I'm content with LEGO's current practice of releasing retro remakes- as long as they introduce sets at prices under 100 dollars.
      See, I'd love to see a new pirates theme hit shelves next year, but I doubt we'll get one b/c of these retro remakes... but I'm more than willing to wait 6 years for a pirate theme... LEGO, give us one for the 40th anniversary please!

      @@OurToyWorld A new theme is quite unlikely now unfortunately, but the remakes are great too. It would be great to maybe get two sets - one under and one over 100$. And with the new Super Mario Piranha Plant set I'm hoping they will start doing smaller 18+ sets. I'm really enjoying the Pirates Retrospective, keep up the great work!

    I remember seeing these in the 2009 catalogue and being in awe at the catalogue art most notably the shipwreck island 🏝️. I never bought any of them and weirdly I don’t regret my decision. I don’t know why but whenever I compare pirates with other vintage themes, even though pirate lore is superior the imagination is inferior imo. I think people like you need to convince me that pirates is better than I think it is and videos like this do a good job at that

  • @benparker1822
    @benparker1822 Год назад +1

    When they released this round of pirates, I did a couple things:
    1) I did a little troop building. But, I did some head swapping, because I didn't want all my redcoat troopers to have goatees. So now I have city police, space police, and even black falcon soldiers with the Red Coat Goatee head.
    2) My Renegade Runner didn't come with a spring-firing cannon like I had seen advertised. As soon as I had the chance, I got one and swapped out. So, it may not be strictly vintage, anymore.

  • @VestedUTuber
    @VestedUTuber 8 месяцев назад +1

    My main complaint with this and the following iteration of the Pirates theme is the lack of any real mid-range sets, and in particular the lack of the smaller ships that helped round out the classic era iterations. 2009 had a couple midrange sets but they were island/fort sets, and there were only a small handful. No ships, no multiple sets for each subtheme/faction. And the theme had a huge jump from even the Soldier's Fort to the Brickbeard's Bounty. There was the Advanced Builds Imperial Flagship released the very next year, but it was even bigger than Brickbeard's Bounty and also carried a bigger price tag. 2015 was even worse, having only one mid-range set - its smaller iteration of the Soldiers' Fort - unless you also counted the chess set. One thing I've noticed is that themes tend to live or die based on the quality, appeal and variety of their mid-range sets, and both 2009 and 2015 Pirates failed to deliver in all three of these categories.
    The other issue for both kinda ties into the first issue - the Imperials basically got shafted, with the exception of 2010's Advanced Builds Imperial Flagship. There was no second captain to deal with either - classic Pirates had Ironhook, who went on his own misadventures and occasionally crossed swords with Redbeard. And the Islanders were basically erased from existence, even though their inclusion would have helped either theme in regards to mid-range set variety. And honestly, when the pirates have no one to actually fight in ship to ship combat, they kinda lose their appeal. After all, no one likes a pirate who doesn't do anything.
    All in all, I think that 2009 Pirates was good from a general design perspective, but mistakes were made at the organizational level that basically doomed the theme.

    I love how Brickbeard was in a lot of the sets because he's such a cool figure. I think its such a shame that the 2015 redbeard was exclusive to the one ship set. I dont think 2015 redbeard was anywhere near as cool of a figure as brickbeard (maybe thats just nostalgia idk) but it still would have been alot nicer to have him in most of the 5 sets from that line

      @@piotr78 it absolutely, 100% is. How's colorful printing on the previously plain shakos a "downgrade"? How's previously absent back torso printing a "downgrade"? That's just a ridiculous statement to make, I'm sry. The only thing I'd agree with, if we're talking about this in detail, is the quality of a white print on the newer figs. That IS in fact a 100% downgrade which TLG won't make any effort whatsoever to fix even these days on modern minifigures. But apart from that everything's awesome with the 2009 figs. You may like the OG design better, good for you and it's understandable, but there's objectively no way the original one was more detailed or advanced than its 2009 iteration, that's all I'm saying.
