Cadillac "Runs" on 2 CYLINDERS!?! (2010 SRX V6)

  • This poor Cadillac BARELY runs...apparently the entire front bank of cylinders has NO SPARK.
For some reason there's a new catalytic converter installed on the front bank too...as well as cam solenoids, sensors, and other parts...hmmmmm
ECM is setting some very specific circuit codes, so we have a good direction to start.
Can we get this Cadillac to run on all 6 cylinders without throwing any more parts at it?

@@robertsmith2956 I never have to worry about locking my smart key in the car, I just keep it clipped to my belt or in my pocket. Of course I own a Toyota so I don't worry about the associated parts failing, I mean they can but it's rare, the console shifter already requires an electric interlock that rarely ever fails on any brand. And the Toyota system (I don't know how GM operates because I won't own a modern GM) reduces wear and tear on the key fob, I only have to touch the door handle to lock or unlock the car. As far as run position goes it's just a tap of the button without a foot on the brake.

One of the hardest things to find when I was an aircraft electrician was a wire that had just enough strands to show continuity but could not carry a load. In those situations a simple test light setup was often more helpful than the fancy test equipment. The only thing more frustrating was when there was intermittent contact. Often a problem would occur under certain g-loads and work fine when the wing flexed and contact was restored. I've seen several of your videos where you've had to deal with similar situations with the cars you work on. Your patience and ability to follow some complex and often erroneous wiring diagrams is commendable. Thoroughly enjoy your channel.

There's no engine of course and I tried to run it koeo and in service mode and any other mode in between lol. Turns out it's just a software glitch coz it was actually in calibration mode I just needed to drive it lol. I got frustrated and passed it on to another tech coz I was in the middle of a 22 crv main harness swap. I was pulled off that job to do a "quick" calibration. Ya right it's never quick lol. It's just gm ain't caught up with the released versions of the program to make it work like it should so if ya'll run across that just drive the dang thing😅 I've worked on cars with 53 miles on em and they have me strip them down to the unibody so the structural techs can go at it, two months later I gotta come back and reassemble the whole car and I'm a mobile tech so it can get interesting to say the least

If I could play devil's advocate here for a minute: I bet the customer drove around for a long time with a misfire and killed that cat! I try not to jump to conclusions when I see new parts because you don't know the whole back story. People ignore things for a long time and then end up having to get all sorts of repairs done all at once and then you look at it and think that somebody ripped them off which they might have but there's also the possibility that somebody was ignoring problems until the car literally wouldn't drive anymore......

Doubtful, most owners aren't going to replace a very expensive catalytic converter to fix a misfire if the shop tells them there is ZERO chance that it is the problem. AND what shop with any moral character would replace a cat on a vehicle that is still running on 3 of 6 cylinders, even if the cat was known bad? Any shop with morals and dignity would advise the customer that doing so could ruin the very expensive new converter. The smoke show is oil that will coke in the converter reducing its lifespan. A shop that imagined that a 'plugged' cat could stop the whole bank from running is my only conceivable guess.

You are SO RIGHT about the drawings! It was the same way in my line of work - and most guys had some sort of aversion to using the drawings - which really limited their success. Yes, a drawing can be wrong some times - but I would always mark up a hard copy and get to the right person for updating. It really helped me the next time I worked on that equipment. Funny that the ECM monitors the hot wire that way - I incorrectly figured the coil primary was fed by a fuse, and the ECM monitored the other coil wire for voltage when it was not being pulled low. I always make the wrong assumption!

Besides the short roll of tape, something to add to the fix box is some inner tube rubber and a razor knife. The inner tube cut to a patch strip, put a pair of slits about 1/2" apart near one end, thread in a zip tie(s), wrap the rubbing harness with the non-zipped end, rolling, and fasten the zip ties, to make a rubber buffer between harness and sharp edges. Also, keep some hockey tape on hand, it is the black cloth tape from the sporting goods supplier. Works great on harness looming.

Ivan: There's no way you can get a crimp tool down there.
    Me: Hold my beer.
Also me: Run a new wire.
Mechanics will never see another mechanic's milspec butt connector crimped properly because it won't fail. But they will see the garbage butt connectors from Walmart crimped with a $5 non-ratcheting crimper because they're failing and bringing the car back into the shop. It's called survivorship bias. And it leads to wrong conclusions about efficacy and the right thing to do. Go read the Wikipedia article on this. You'll get a laugh about what happened in WWII. The reason you never see Ivan's solder joints failing is because he usually gets these cars when they're closer to the crusher than new. But take another vehicle that people usually keep longer like a boat or airplane or a vehicle that gets abused and it's a different story. If you don't believe me, ask yourself why OEMs always crimp terminals on never solder. It's not because they can't invent a machine to do it at scale. I will solder some wires, but it's mostly smaller wire like signal wire because it's easy to provide strain relief across the solder joint.

Ive never seen a proper butt splice repair fail, i have fixed many failed solder splice repairs due to fracture in a high vibration, high temp change location. I used quality butt splices to install relays and circuits into my headlamp harness to keep low beams on with high beams about 13 years ago, never have any problems with them.

  • @additudeobx

Blame the car for harness routing, but you can also blame the car for having the BCM function setup to monitor that +12 volt power line to the ignition coils and provide a fail code. That's what narrowed the diagnosis down to the open wire.

I would imagine that as this wire wore through it would give an increasing rate of misfires. If the owner just ignored it and kept powering through that would feed unburnt fuel through the cat, until it failed. Thus the cat may have been throwing codes and needed replacement as a secondary failure to the ignition problem. It is one of those reasons why problems should be fixed and not ignored.

What's the customer's beef? Lots of cars, motorcycles and even trikes run on three cylinders!😂 GM sure stuffed that harness between a rock and a hard place. I have one of those soldering pencils too. I power mine with a motorcycle battery and special adapter. Lastly, from running on only three cylinders and dumping fuel into the dead ones, I'm thinking there may be gasoline in the crankcase along with the oil, so the oil level is too high. Do an oil change. That might fix the smoke problem.

  • @michaeldamian5140

The smoking problem may be indicative of gasoline dilution of the engine oil. An oil change might have improved this condition, perhaps substantially.
