Danke CHEF I have been looking for this mushroom for last couple of my mushroom gathering carrier. (2 Years) This last weekend I was cutting the grass in my yard I came across a Chicken of the Woods growing on an old plum tree. I'm going to try it today. Thank you. P.S. I'm living in Germany.
Cheers and love from the USA. Get cooking. Chef
FYI for people just watching. Do NOT eat these, are any other wild edible mushroom raw. ALWAYS cook your mushrooms.
why did he say raw and then eat it
@@noemi7475 Honestly who knows… but you never wanna eat any mushrooms raw, with a few exceptions. Chix of the woods especially should never be eaten raw because it can make you really sick. Not life threatening but vomiting & GI upset
Was just talking about this shroom, then I was walking in this wealthy, suburban complex, and it was growing near an Oak in someone's tailored lawn. I nabbed and walked briskly away, super paranoid.
Enjoy it. Mushrooms are 1 of Natures gifts.
I wouldn't trust mushrooms on tailored lawns. To me those lawns use chemicals, like weed killer. I trust parks a tad more...state parks with low traffic and deep terrain. But, thats just me.
These mushrooms should not be eaten raw. They should be cooked before eating. The cell walls are made of Chitin and your body cannot break this down raw. Eating these raw can cause stomach upset or adverse reactions in some people.
So true I did that and was violently sick and ended up at A and E.
All mushrooms should be cooked
@@foxguyday With a few exceptions, like the common button mushrooms and enoki and Crimini,
portabello and a few hundred other varieties. Feel free to reply.
Why can’t I believe it even tastes like “chicken” , I’m gonna find some of this mushroom
Found 3 at the base of a huge OAK today. Grabbed just one of them and will cook it tomorrow. Looks tasty. The other 2 I will get when they are even bigger.
Excellent find. Please come back and tell us how they taste ? Also search "Mushrooms" on this channel for more recipes. Chef
I want to make sure is not poison ?
I saw close to our farm yesterday. They growing up on the old dead wood every year.
Thank you for your video.
Yep, made some tonight for the first time, loved them!
Just found some in the woods in Southwest VA behind a friend's house. SO excited!!! Thanks for the cooking tutorial. Can't wait to try! 🙂👍
That is awesome! Drop another comment, after you cook them !
Looks great💜
I finally found some in my woods today ! They come up every year but not in the same place. They make me search for them ! I’m cooking them for the first time. I cooked wine caps last year and used different seasonings to see what tasted best. I thought the BLACKSTONE Breakfast Blend seemed to taste the best for me. Maybe because I associate the texture of mushrooms to eggs! 💁♀️
Kick ass. We need more foraging chefs in the world
Seth, my friend. Spoken like a true hero. I'm about to get lit. Chef
thank you!
You're welcome! Watch our other videos and drop some comments !
Just picked up ( bought) some today to roast with some vegetables: cauliflower, onions, carrots, celery, walnuts, herbs and chicken broth. Excited to try Chicken of the Woods!
Sounds great! Tell us how did it taste? What did they cost ?
@@chefgiovanni Hey, there. Paid $22.95 per pound (bought one piece) Roasting was probably not the best method. If purchase them again, l’ll try oven frying. The texture and flavor is remarkably similar to chicken.
We just found a 5 pound head of this mushroom, didn't know how to cook it thanks for the video
Where’d you find it at?
@@kixxmzk2910 the woods
jackpot!
Thanks for the video! I found one. I live in woods and there is one growing on an old tree stump. Should I pick the whole thing? It looks like a good size. If you don't use all of it right away will refrigeration keep it longer?
Lucky find ! Pick part of it , cook it up and you might go back for the rest. Wise pickers usually leave the bottom inch or so, as it usually grows back ... thumbs up ......
I actually froze some and kept it for a year and I just cooked it and it's perfectly fine.
Thanks bro just found a nicely sized mushroom on my walk and wasn't sure how to cook it 🤦♂️😂😂
Man that is looking soo DIVINEEEEEEEE.......
Right on. Love your comment !
I just found 3 cluster of chickens of the wood in my backyard, and shall use your recipe and cook them. I'm Amped up for the taste....
Great video! 👍🏼 Too bad you can't buy them in the stores 😞
... what is the texture like?
@@star_gazer2967 Like a stuffed, roasted big thick Portobello mushroom. Chef Loves you. Let's cook !
How long do you fry em. Air fryer good ?
Depends on the size. Cut them down like I did, hot oil, less than 1 min. each side . Watch my recipes and teach the channel for recipes.
Gain skills, get cooking.
Before tossing them in flour did you dip them in egg or milk or anything? How does the flour stick?
These were damp and moist, however a bit of egg wash may help ! Get Cooking , Chef
@@chefgiovanni I see, thanks!!
I found some near a suburb! Looks just like the one you found, they usually look a more vivid orange-ish color based on the videos I see, so i was unsure wether it was chicken of the woods or not
How did you cook them? How did they taste ?
@@chefgiovanni i haven't cooked them yet, how long can they go without being properly stored? I've had them out for a little over 1 day, i hope it's not to late to preserve them in my freezer!
@@chefgiovanni a quick question, it's older and a bit more rough, what's the best way I can hydrate it?
Awesome stuff great recipe ... just one thing, you should never ever eat raw wild mushrooms ! EVER :)
I found these today , only difference is the bottom is yellow not white , are they still OK to consume ? Thanks
They should be yellow on the underside, I think his in the video are a bit old
It's going black shortly after cutting?
Thanks
That is a different mushroom.
If it bruises black or brown it's black staining polypore, it's OK to eat but not as good.
Would have never even picked that it’s so old
Yes, but it tastes like chicken.
Thank me later.
@@chefgiovanni I mean, I forage them. That’s just an old specimen.
Hen of the woods and Chicken of the woods are 2 different types? Yes?
Exactly.
Thank you for replying to me. ChefGiovanni would you be willing to confirm I have a chicken of the woods for me?
trying to figure out how to do with what i just got. too much to store i know that....
It can be wrapped and stored in fridge for a short time. Also you can cut into small strips and dry it out, then store in jars for soup.
Nice but to me they seem abit on tuff side atleast when fried was hopping for away of cooking that made them abit softer texture
So u know they grow every year
When you harvest them don't rip them out cut them with sharp knife so it's not ripping the mycylum with it then more likely to grow back in same spot
Best time harvest is when when get few days of heavy rain that's what brings them out of course temperature makes difference also
All good points. Get cooking. Chef # 1
How do you keep the leftover mushrooms when you don't cook them all at once?
I put in tight plastic bags, in fridge drawers. I also gave a lot of them away.
@@chefgiovanni Gotcha! I might try and cook them then freeze them if I have a lot.
Cut up raw or cooked, vacuum seal, and freeze.
❤
You’re probably not going to find it in your area, I found this in the forest
Me watching this while eating a bowl of blackened bowtie alfredo with chicken of the woods.
This mushroom MUST cook in salt wather 30 minutes before use
Not true. Do your research. Life is food and food is life.
You never stop learning.
Why don't you clean the mushroom before cooking it?
I do brush them off before cooking. Ideally, you do not want to get the mushrooms wet.
Don't eat it raw unless you want to have gastric distress.
You don’t even wash it?
Most mushrooms should not get washed before cooking, a brush or cotton towel can help remove debris. Mushrooms are very healthy and a natural superfood. The terms "mushroom" and "toadstool" go back centuries and were never precisely defined, nor was there consensus on application. A mushroom develops from a nodule, or pinhead, less than two millimeters in diameter, usually overnight. Fun Fact ; Mycelium is the vegetative part of a fungus or fungus-like bacterial colony, consisting of a mass of branching, thread-like hyphae. Through the mycelium, a fungus absorbs nutrients from its environment. Get cooking ! Chef
Lots of mushrooms shouldn't be washed but the piece I tested seemed fine, unlike chantrelles that suck up water like a sponge and turn mushy.
Yup, tastes like chicken.
Comment.
Have you ever heard of wood lovers paralysis or does that only apply to psychedelics?
I have not heard this term. I hope others will drop some comments. Happy trails. Let's get cooking.
@@chefgiovanni it does what it sounds like and you can't move your body for a few hours, and it's not fun. It only happens to mushrooms growing out of wood, hence the name. It MAY just be the psylocibin mushrooms
Chef has a sexy voice 😜
Yeah Buddy ! Let us cook ! 🥘🍲🍜
Agreeing with the others, you shouldn't advise anyone to eat any wild mushroom raw. Also, the chewing/mouth smacking noises totally kill the video... 🤢😂🤣

Slowest recipe video ever 🏆
As you gain skills, you will see that "Slow Food" always tastes better. Roasting a stew now, 4 hours into it. Think of heaven in your mouth.
Chicken of the woods are not to be eaten raw!!
Most mushrooms should not be eaten raw. They should be cooked before eating. Eating these raw can cause stomach upset or adverse reactions in some people. However, I once ate a rusty nail found in a morsel of fast food
and learned from it.
