    Thank you! I had an older laptop(sitting shut off since 2020) that I needed to do that to. I have been afraid to do it myself, but I'm cheap so I looked again and saw this and took notes and just performed it flawlessly! I so appreciate it.

      Hoping someone can answer me in two seconds but it legit just wont go to the right screen when rebooting after holding doen the right buttons and stuff and I swear I am doing it correctly 😩

    Thank you VERY much! Just a comment: I was resetting an older Mac mini with a wireless keyboard. When I first tried this, I did as you told me; I pressed Command and R keys until I saw the apple and bar, then I released ... it just went straight into a normal start up. It worked when I tried holding down the keys until I saw the OS Utility screen. Hope this helps somebody like me.

    For people who had an error while deleting the volumes
    My error was saying that it could not be unmounted
    To fix:
    I restarted it and pressed Cmd+R
    Go thru the same process and it will work

    Bruh. 45 minutes chatting with apple support, during which they couldn't figure out how to help me, and ultimately it was determined that my device is obsolete and they cannot even support it, and wouldn't even try to help me anymore. I can't thank you enough for posting this simple fix.

    worked well for me! Only issue was it went to recovery... click on sign in, enter password, then it went to utilities and the rest was exact! Thanks!

    This didn't work for me at all. The removal of the partition failed, and now I'm stuck with a computer that won't start up. And it won't install the Catalina OS using the Disk Utility because the partition is missing. If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

    Can someone help me please, when I restart my MacBook Air it say “macOS recovery” instead of “macOS utilities” and I don’t know what to do

      it should pop up a sign in for you in the middle of it; click on it, enter your password; then it takes you to macOS Utilities

    Legend. I've found other good videos explaining this stuff but this one best explains it for Catalina. The Disk partitions threw me off with how to do the whole process correctly.

    Thanks very much. two days ago other videos left out a very important step. to erase to data hard drive. I didnt do that and I had 130 gb of "other volume inside containers ". when I watched your video I knew that was the important step that was missing. it worked perfectly. Thanks!!!!

    Great video.
    Helps a user with a nice guiding, step-by-step guide to reset the MacBook.
    I used these steps to reset a older MBP 13" Retina (early 2013), Intel i5 processor.
    All done now February 2021.
    Worked just like clockwork ;-)
    Highly recommended.

    I messed up and it won’t let me do anything, it won’t even install macOS it says “the target volume is part of incomplete system and cannot be installed to”. Please help me

      I got the same error mainly because i did not erase the drive successfully and tried to install the OS again on the same drive. I faced this error while trying to erase the drive : discussions.apple.com/thread/250826364?answerId=251571263022#251571263022 and it got solved by forcefully unmounting the drive before erasing it as per the commands mentioned in the same post.

    Thanks a lot for the most accurate guide.
    I did cross the error message “kextcache is accessing the disk” while dropping the volumes. That, I resolved by opening the terminal from inside the restore GUI upper menu. Then called diskutil unmountDisk force /dev/disk0 (this actually forced a shutdown of the machine). After cmd+r I managed to reset the volumes and erase the disk.

    got the latest Catalina update and all the sudden my 2019 MacBook Pro usb c hub stopped working and Im not buying a new one so hope this works
    SMC restart fixed it.

    I got this god damn “Chill Tab” virus and had to do a factory reset. After doing everything you’ve said now I’m waiting on the loading bar to finish like I’ve got the Apple logo and that loading bar under it. So far I’ve had like 5 or 6 loading bars and it’s still continuing without stopping

    Thanks for this video, I had a greyed out "Macintosh HD" partition as well as a non greyed out one with the same name after I reinstalled Catalina. It was driving me nuts cause I didn't know what it is. I figured out I did not delete the partition from my old install as I didn't know to do the minus button to delete.
