As a young boy in the early ‘60’s I not only got to see the Stooges in person , I was invited up on stage to tell them a joke ! They appeared in person to promote one of the movies they made with “ Curly Joe “ . They asked if anyone had a joke , so my hand shot up and I was chosen and I scurried up on stage . I still remember the joke too . “ What did the Beatles say to the Octopus? “ “ I wanna hold your hand , hand , hand , hand , hand , hand , hand , hand ! “ They all gave me the obligatory laugh , but Larry put his hand on my head and gave me such a sweet and honest smile . I’ll never forget that moment.
Loved Shemp and Loved Curly. They both were great! They both had their own style of Comedy. Loved The Three Stooges! God bless them and I thank them for all the years of entertainment thy gave me as a child of the 60's, a teen in the 70's and still now in my adulthood.. I will forever watch these guys! They must still have them rolling on the floors in Heaven! God bless them and their family's.. 👨👨👨
If Curly is a five year-old trapped inside an adult's body, then Shemp is a surly fourteen year-old (complete with long, greasy hair) who acts tougher than he really is, panics when in trouble, goes ga-ga over girls, and chafes under authority yet goes along with the gang. Shemp carved out his own spot and was funny as hell--in an interview, Emil Sitka said that Edward Bernds (arguably their best director) loved to watch Shemp ad-lib on set and would incorporate bits here and there that Shemp would think up.
I always saw Curly as a kid and Shemp as an adult, with audiences that fit each. It's kinda weird to see Curly drinking beer, while brewskis and cigars are totally appropriate in Shemp's world.
Thank You Paul Howard for this, and though I was born in 1963, the Three Stooges, the Bowery Boys, Little Rascals & My All Time Favorite Charlie Chaplin were embedded in my childhood Forever. Nobody could really replace Curly, so Shemp wisely did not try to copy him. Shemp did his own thing, and it worked! He was uniquely funny and I think underappreciated. Ironically, nobody could replace Shemp.

You’re right though, he’s not his baby brother. No one could’ve copied curlys style and timing . But Shemp was hilarious in his own ways for sure. I truly wish both brothers would’ve lived in the 60s to see them being able to do public TV appearances and movies (which was the trios wish from the very beginning). Who knows, maybe had curlys health would’ve ever improved and if Shemp didn’t die, there could’ve been Four Stooges, or could’ve simply renamed themselves The Stooges
At 19:28 we see Shemp ironing pants. One of the funniest things I've ever seen in my life, when he get's regurgitated by the ironing board closet. My grandmother had one of these!
I have been a huge fan of the Three Stooges for more than 50 years. As a high school teacher, I have introduced today’s kids to the also. They were ALL great! Love you, boys! 😉❤️
0:41-3:15 music to my ears. I’m glad Shemp returned to The Three Stooges. “Hold That Lion!” is my favorite Shemp-era Stooges episode because it has Larry Fine & all 3 Howard brothers (Moe, Shemp, and Curly). When I was a child near the turn of the millennium and I saw Curly with his old partners, I cried tears of joy in seeing him (briefly) return to The Three Stooges since his debilitating stroke in “Half-Wits Holiday” 8:57-9:48 😂😂😂😂 3:16-4:27/27:22-33:58 & 38:31-43:35 RIP Curly & Shemp 😭
Growing up, my two older brothers and I were a lot like the Three Stooges. My oldest brother was the Moe of our group; always the boss; our middle brother was the Larry of the group. Then there was me, the youngest, last in the "pecking-order"-- the Shemp/ Curly of the group, always the "low man again!" Remember Nackie, Wackie, and Sackie: "We now do 'three-high--low,' with bottom man breaking every bone in his body. Very, very beautiful." I, like Curly (and Shemp) was always "bottom man."
Curly was everybody's favorite, but Shemp was the funniest of the stooges. I honestly have no preference between the two of them. Moe, Larry, Curly and Shemp RIP.
"Larry wasn't family." Sure he was. Family isn't about blood. It's about who's there for you when you need it most. While I'll always love Curly, Shemp is great, too. He stepped into a difficult situation and really made his own mark.
Watching the Stooges as a kid in the early 70s, I thought Shemp was the original 3rd Stooge and Curly was the replacement because the first ones I saw was with Shemp. I caught the syndication rotation in the Shemp era. The Curly vs Shemp argument is like the James Bond- Connery vs Moore debate. It usually depended on who you saw first. Curly and Shemp were both fantastic. I have never seen a documentary on how the stooges performed the eye pokes and slaps without getting seriously injured. Chaplin, Keaton, laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, and the 3 Stooges should have their on wing of the comedy hall of fame.
I have the 3 Stooges box set and I have watched it over and over countless times. I’ve seen them on TV for years in syndication and I have to say they have me cracking up ever time. Of course Curly is / was my favorite Stooge but Shemp was just as funny. My heart goes out to Moe in heaven for the loss he had to endure. Losing both brothers so close together had to be hard to handle. But he did it in such a professional way. It would have been so awesome if the Stooges kids kept the comedy going in honor of their fathers. But I’m guessing God wanted to keep the 3 Stooges comedy act going up in heaven. So hear is to the Stooges memory and keeping their slap stick comedy alive for ever…. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
As a kid I preferred the Curly episodes, but really only because of the ascetic reasons. That is he looked too much like Moe.but it was never a performance issue. His episodes were still good, funny and he really did have spot on timing. Now that I’m older and know the back story I appreciate him and enjoy his episodes just as much as Curly’s because I don’t expect a Curly. And when you don’t expect a Curly you realize how good of a Stooge he really was
Always loved Shemp and never compared him to Curly as far as comedic style. Both were genius with what they did. I think it was Curly's child like character that appealed to kids. The last 3 years Curly was in the act his sickly, poor health negatively effected nearly all these shorts (1944-46). He wasn't the same & it showed. Shemp was a welcome addition back.
It may very well be that Curly was acting like Shemp. After all his joining was because Shemp wanted to leave so that could be the reverse of how things seemed.
All of the guys were hilarious each one of them had a certain scene that I liked and can remember almost word for word that every time I think of it it still cracks me up.
Shemp is my favorite stooge and has been for 62 years and my favorite Shemp shorts are the scare comedy including the headless robot walking and driving
When I was little I used to watch the three stooges all the time I love those guys they were so funny this comedy was just good no curse words no sexual innuendos none of that crap just good comedy.

Shemp was always my favorite. But it was really hard for Moe to lose 2 brothers in a span of 3 years. Could you imagine?
I still watch the three stooges today but know I watch with my grand kids and they love them
This would have been so much better without Whoopie Goldberg's comments.
Shemp is my favorite stooge and has been for 62 years and my favorite Shemp shorts are the scare comedy including the headless robot walking and driving
Dopey Dicks (1950).
When I was little I used to watch the three stooges all the time I love those guys they were so funny this comedy was just good no curse words no sexual innuendos none of that crap just good comedy.
Although it is sad it is also beautiful hearing how Moe's wife went straight to his side when all he wanted was to escape 😢❤ RIP to the boys.. we miss you even though we weren't even alive during the same time..
I sure wish I've would have met both Shemp and Curly and of course,Moe and Larry. As a black man who grew up watching the THRee SToOgeS,these guys meant as lot to me.
Shemp said that his favorite episode was fright night the one with the boxing footage.
Thank you Thank you Thank you. By far the best!
Larry, IMO, most underrated.
I always thought the bars name shemp worked in ...in the W.C. Fields movie was hilarious.
I met your Dad! Wonderful guy! 👍👍😎🇺🇸
Uncle Larry had the face only a mother could love😳
"Shoot one that way" 🤣🤣🤣
The Vernon Dent story from Shemp’s funeral was so moving. 😢
Poor Moe, lost curly in 1952 and then 3 years later he loses his other brother, shemp. Moe outlived them all, but was right behind Larry by about 4 months after his death, in 1975
As a Stooge fan for over 50 years, I always thought Shemp was as-if not more-funny than Curly.
Love Shemp!!!
I used to hate Shemp but he grew on me and found him to be just as funny as any of the rest eventually
You never really appreciate Curly....until you've seen Shemp....
i always liked shemp just as much as curly.....he was hilarious. i know they both played the similar role out of the 3 but it would've been awesome if they were able to somehow have done a couple with just the 3 brothers. shemp and curly together....shemp, curly, and larry would've been even more ridiculous
