You just simply buy cars you can afford. Jeep wranglers are good looking toys, they don’t loose value as much as other light trucks do. Especially, if you made modifications to it. You can buy faster cars, but with a Jeep you can’t get to where the Wrangler will. Amazing for the beach, a monster in the snow, made for the mud.

Worth noting there’s actually 2 versions of both the pentastar and the 2.0T. The only 2.0T with eTorque is available on the Sahara. If you choose the 2.0T on Sport or Rubicon it does not come with eTorque. eTorque can also be added to the pentastar (on all models I believe). In previous years all 2.0T came with eTorque and the pentastar was not available with eTorque. For 2020 there’s technically 5 engine options considering above including the new diesel.

I have to say, I was a lot more enthusiastic about our JL before the rear window exploded out the back from what I truly believe was an overheating rear defroster (the wire was melted) in 25 degree weather. Jeep refused to cover it, saying they were “not aware of the problem.” Even a short search on the internet surfaced several examples of back windows breaking without obvious external cause and at least one other report of an overheating defroster leading to a blown out rear window. No very happy that it happened at all, but the fact that Jeep wouldn’t make good on it ($1300 so far and the defroster hasn’t been fixed yet) was the real disappointment. We’re also on the 3rd windshield (our cost), which already needs to be replaced. Clearly a known problem and I can live with that, but the rear window is a way bigger and scarier (just ask the kid who was sitting in back when it happened) issue. Not my first Jeep, but maybe the last.

Not all wranglers hold their value like they used to. My wrangler pulls to the right and nobody, not even the dealers, have been able to resolve the problem. Very well done review. However I think most folks especially in the Jeep community, don't give enough consideration to the selec trac option. To me it was the deciding factor between buying a Rubicon vs buying a Sahara. Fact is...I am not a serious rock crawler. The selec trac is not just a convenience thing it is a very useful unique feature with unique capabilities. In Full Time 4-wd you have basically a limited slip transfer case, witch is great for on road snowy, icy, rainy, conditions. No binding when you hit dry pavement patches. Then of course the transfer case has all of the other normal positions too, 2H, 4H, 4L, etc, all locked of course. To me this feature was more valuable than the Rubicons 4:1 ratio and axle lockers. I opted for the limited slip rear diff and plan to install a front diff aftermarket locker. The Rubi is always depicted as having the best 4wd system (cause of the ratio's and lockers) however depending on the applicable use, it is lacking when compared to the Sahara's optional selec trac system.

I own a 18 JLU Sport S. Im thinking about trading it for a diesel Sport S. All that torque and mpg. Im going to disagree with you on the headlights. I think the stock ones arent bad at all. With the LED, you can also run into issues with them freezing over and not clearing snow. Real aftermarket full lights are coming out now. I wouldn't pay for the MOPAR lights.

Since most people are not mechanics, instead of spending $1,000s of dollars on aftermarket parts and cost of labor, if they seriously want to go overlanding, camping and off-roading, the Rubicon makes sense:
All of the aftermarket parts you want, and warranty, out of the box.
The casual Jeeper instead can go to whichever model fits their lifestyle and budget.

Eastern California here, where snowfall is measured by the yard. My wife wants the heated steering wheel on a two-door Jeep. The problem is the cost of the Jeep is really tough to stomach considering she won’t do anything more than daily driving. She loves the Subaru Forester because it has everything including the Winter package for about $18k less than the Wrangler. If the two-door Wrangler were comparably priced to the Subaru we’d get two Wranglers.

LEDs, larger radio, cold weather, safety, etc are classic upcharges. Not needed. The way I was taught was always get the trailering group and snow plow prep (for trucks). Other than that, I consider axle options as a “treat”. I would be hesitant with all the options stated in this video being “required”.

I had the ecodiesel in my ‘14 Ram 1500. It blew just like many others at 70,000 miles. It was replaced by Chrysler without any issues. I loved the engine until the blowing incident. You must use special oil and filters, will cost +/- $200 each oil change. Just a little food for thought.

I miss the old Willy's WWII Jeeps.......4 cylinder , 60 hp types. My grand dad had one ( Mil Surplus) made in 1942. He'd lay the windshield down and off he'd take me fishing as a boy in the 1970's. Grand dad's been gone 25 years, the jeep a tad longer...... Wish Jeep made a anniversary military style WWII Jeep , bet they'd sell tons of them......I'd buy one!

Do a buying guide to showcase whether higher trims and options are worth it compared to getting a base Jeep and upgrading parts yourself. Compare the cost, hastle, and quality of 3rd party parts (or used from a junk yard) compared to forking over $$$ for straight from factory.

Great video. Watched a ton before finally purchasing my rubicon yesterday. I preferred the hardtop 3.6L, absolutely didn't want the 2.0L etorque engine, but wasn't opposed to the new non-etorque turbo 2.0L. My must have list included LED lights, cold weather group, tow group, steel bumpers, and 8.4" display (for the premium stereo and the off-road apps). It wasn't easy finding what I wanted in state, without other options that I didn't want. In the end it came down to accepting some other options without paying through the nose for them. I ended up with a new 2020 ocean blue rubicon with the new non-etorque 2.0L, which is fine for my use. It has all of the options on my must have list, but also has two options I would not have purchased because they are very pricey and not necessary - the sky active roof and the upgraded wheels.
I bought this rubicon after a month of searching because of the price. It was $9k under msrp, which was lower than other rubicons that had most, but not all the must haves on the list. My only comment is about the upgraded wheels with the stock Falken Wildpeak tires. This vehicle wanders like mad on the highway. I didn't notice that on other rubicons I drove with the BFG AT's. I'm assuming the wandering is caused by the aggressive off-road tread of the Falkens? Tommy, maybe you could talk a little about what to expect from the tire choice.

Checked the cold tire pressure. They were all at 42 psi cold. Lowered them to 37 cold as the info listed inside the driver door specifies. Drives much better now. More like what I'd expect with those knobby tires. Steering input is very sensitive, but steady in a straight line. Dealer must not have set the proper pressure prior to delivery. Again, thanks for the help.
